So now SpaceX, with no working spacesuit, and years behind on it's multi-billion dollar moon lander, is lobbying NASA to go to the Hubble Space Telescope.

"A successful private mission could improve Hubble's ability to point at celestial objects and, by boosting its orbit, extend its life by years... however, an accident could leave the multibillion-dollar telescope broken — or, even more tragically, tethered to the dead bodies of the astronauts sent to repair it."

Starlink is killing Hubble

Something about this plan to move Hubble, didn't make sense. If the space telescope still has 10 years of useful life, why this risky SpaceX mission to boost it's orbit now?

Well it turns out the main thing threatening the utility of Hubble is... wait for it... SpaceX Starlink satellites, which orbit just above Hubble constantly "photo-bombing" the images. Within a few years there will be so many Starlinks that Hubble will be useless.

This is a pretty basic, "and what's the deal with airline food??" kinda observation, but

It's just been brought to my attention that a Chrome tab takes up a minimum of 24 to 28 MB of RAM*, even if it's looking at about:blank or an empty HTML page. There are good engineering reasons it might work this way but I am also thinking about how my first computer-shaped computer** had 4 MB of RAM and that was like, an OS plus sophisticated full apps. Later we upgraded to 8 MB RAM and that was a big deal

@tveskov In a vaguely related vein, you should always carry a small piece of fibre optic cable when hiking. If you get lost dog a hole and bury the fibre. Before long an excavator will be along and will accidentally dig it up. Hitch a ride out on the excavator.

Hi. Quick break from the posting for a serious PSA.

Please have a bottle of aspirin in your home. Make sure the tablets can be chewed as well as just swallowed. Make sure you remove any fiddly foil seal and such. Don't use this aspirin for regular pain relief, just keep it around and know where it is.

Hopefully, you'll never need it and will just feel silly for having it. But if a bad time comes for you someday, being able to chew aspirin when emergency services tells you may save your life.

18+ danderson,

Aspirin is an anticoagulant, meaning it reduces your blood's ability to clot. Normally this is an undesirable side effect, because if you're bleeding you want your blood to clot and stop the bleeding.

But heart attacks and other cardiovascular events can be caused by blood clots obstructing blood vessels. Your body's not supposed to let that happen, but for various reasons sometimes it does. When it does, minutes count and you need to tip the odds in your favor.

Absolutely incredible to me how much faster and more effective it is for me to rip an entire site down with wget --mirror and search it with grep to find anything than it is for me to use Google for any goddamn thing now. Datacenters full of hardware running thousands of PhD-theses worth of high performing hardware versus me sitting here banging rocks together and my way works.

I'm idly waiting for the iPad Mini refresh that's probably not coming, the same way I was waiting for the iPod Touch refresh that never came and the iPod refresh that never came, as is my habit.

The iPad Mini, neglected black sheep of the lineup, is the purest and most honest expression of what an iPad is and what it's for: a small, incredibly portable computer for doing one thing at a time, where rough edges of computation are polished smooth and the interface falls away and disappears.

mhoye,
@mhoye@mastodon.social avatar

Bret Victor used these diagrams to describe the "tools of the future".

https://worrydream.com/ABriefRantOnTheFutureOfInteractionDesign/

Victor's disdain for the iPad is crystalline; Apple's recent ad is a distillate. I can't say how much Victor has shaped what I want from computing, but I'm certain he sees a human using an iPad the same way he sees a lizard in a pet store, a creature of untold potential pawing at a sheet of glass, baffled by arbitrary and cruel restrictions that it - that you - can see past, but can't reach past.
