I think I need someone with better skills to explain something to me.

How can I tell if my laptop's built-in graphics card supports 4k@60Hz?

I'm going Laptop→USB-C 3.2 cable→Hub→DisplayPort→DP cable→Monitor.

If I use a Windows machine, I get 2160p@60Hz - so I know the cables & hubs are fine.

Ubuntu / Pop only does 4k@30Hz.

My graphics are
Mesa Intel® UHD Graphics (CML GT2) & my processor is i5-10210U.

What command-line incantation do I need to see my GPU's supported outputs?

kevinctofel,
@kevinctofel@hachyderm.io avatar

@Edent The GPU supported resolutions and refresh rates are chip dependent. That chip can do 4K 60Hz over DP, per Intel: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/195436/intel-core-i5-10210u-processor-6m-cache-up-to-4-10-ghz.html

You likely need to configure Linux using xrandar to get the same resolution \ refresh rates as Windows: https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-configure-your-monitors-with-xrandr-in-linux

🆕 post — How many towels does one person need?

If you’re like most people, I’m betting there are at least five bath towels per person in your house. Maybe even six or seven. That’s just a guess; I’ve never seen any official statistics on such an important question.

Here’s my answer (including the type of towels), which lets me save time, space, money, and resources as part of my lifestyle.

🆕 post -- Skip the touchscreen and this Acer Chromebook Plus is $299

If you don’t mind a few feature omissions and simply want the Plus experience for under $300, I recommend checking out this Asus model. It’s not the most premium of the Plus devices. However, it nails the basics and has a current sale price near most entry-level .

@jasonmcfadden Yup, there are very few Chromebooks with a display larger than 15.6”. And those are usually gimped with less performant processors, unfortunately. 🤷‍♂️

Personally, I would love to see the FrameWork 16 available as a Chromebook. Plenty big enough for my aging eyes and with really solid internals. Until then I’m on my 2022 Acer Chromebook Spin 714 daily.

🆕 post — Intentional mornings make the day

Earlier this week, I noted that I’d be sharing more longer form thoughts on my lifestyle. Today I want to share how important my mornings are to that lifestyle. I take very intentional actions to prepare my day. These actions effectively set up the framework of how and where I spend my waking time.

kevinctofel,
@kevinctofel@hachyderm.io avatar

@dyami Right, a dynamic, fast-paced environment probably isn’t the best for my approach. 🤣 Maybe suggest brief morning touch-base meetings to set (or reset) the short- and long-term priorities?

Even when I was in corporate IT, I tried to block of time to focus on specific things, so I think there’s still merit in that. But you do have to be more flexible in that type of workspace.

kevinctofel,
@kevinctofel@hachyderm.io avatar

@jnv Give it a try, even if it’s just one task, for a few days and let me know if/how it works out. Cheers!

Spammers need to up their game.* This looks like an effort from 2009. 🙄

  1. Sent from Gmail as a “bank”
  2. Sent to multiple people
  3. Has a shared PDF
  4. Said PDF is shared from a non-bank email address
  5. I don’t have an account with this bank

*I’m being facetious: spammers should be sent to a desert island for one year with some food, water and no internet access. Then we could drop “Help coming soon” messages in a bottle every so often just to screw with them.

kevinctofel,
@kevinctofel@hachyderm.io avatar

@amoroso Totally agree. TBH, I (almost) never see these due to the good filtering by Proton Mail. I just don’t like spam piling up for 30 days before it automatically deletes. Happened to see this before clicking the button to empty spam.

This isn’t a product for me, but I’m sure many folks will be intrigued. It’s the Clicks keyboard case for that news outlets reported today.

Turns out, the amazing Michael Fisher (aka: Mr. Mobile) doesn’t just have a hands-on video of the keyboard; he’s a co-founder of the company as well. I wish him nothing but success!

Great points here.

  1. It’s not about the number of things, although I find benefits from having fewer rather than more clothes. One load of wash every weekend and I’m done, for example.

  2. Instead of focusing on the numbers, focus on what items serve a purpose and consider letting go of those that don’t.

Now that I've got some posts and configuration setup with my new blog, I decided to finally look at design.

Started coding some CSS but then I found the AWESOME eleventy-excellent starter built by @lene at https://eleventy-excellent.netlify.app/

Have some tweaks to make but loving the look!

Be honest: do you actually finish each side project before starting a new one?

Or do you have a whole bunch of unfinished side projects? 🤔

🆕 post — Maximum Minimalism for 2024
I've shared bits of my experiences over the last year or so. Occasionally, I get some confirmation or a good suggestion from other minimalists. More often though, I get a comment from someone whose interest in minimalism is piqued.
As I enjoyed some quiet time with coffee on New Year's Day morning, I decided maybe I should share more on this topic, but in a longer form. https://myconscious.stream/blog/Maximum-Minimalism-for-2024/

🆕 post -- Revenue retrospect: 5 years of indie blogging

As a full-time , 2023 was a wake-up call. To explain, I'm sharing my site revenues over the past 5 full calendar years, along with the outside factors that made the most impact.

They tell a sad story but: I am grateful that I've been able to write for a living as long as I have.

@mshockley Thanks! I suspect most of the successful content creators don’t want people seeing big numbers. Since I don’t have those kinds of numbers, it was easier to share. 🤣 Cheers!
