Should we stay in our current house or should we look for a more suitable home? As a , I’m leaning towards a smaller place. And I recently saw a “smart” pre-fab home that appears ideal and reasonably priced.

The “smarts” aren’t likely what you think, but they make all the difference.

@jnv Yup, I'd love to see that too. We keep focusing on "more" and "bigger" when it comes to housing, which isolates certain regions / income levels from home ownership.

It’s time to log out. I’ll be putting the About blog on hiatus for a bit. Possibly for good. Here’s why and what’s next.

@ferrix that’s a great idea. Will research how to easily get the content out of WP to make that happen.

@jasonmcfadden Thanks! I’d look to Chrome Unboxed, 9to5 Google, and Android Central for coverage. I also had Google Alerts for ChromeOS and related topics. More noise than signal there but you might find some other good coverage. Cheers!

When I tell people I’ve never installed Chrome, they look at me like I’m crazy. But given what’s going on with Google now, appears to have been a good decision.

kevinctofel,
@kevinctofel@hachyderm.io avatar

@mako Right there with you. I’ve been migrating away from Chrome for the past 6 months or so. Even on my Chromebooks, which tells you something.

kevinctofel,
@kevinctofel@hachyderm.io avatar

@mako Good strategy IMO. I’m beholden to Google for some business things, i.e.: AdSense, Analytics, Search Console, etc… But that relationship is coming to an end very soon. I have tried and do like @Perplexity but need to spend more time with it.

kevinctofel,
@kevinctofel@hachyderm.io avatar

@mako I know this won’t help on iOS as I presume you’re using Safari, but I found this, which I’ll try later today on my desktop with Firefox. https://www.reddit.com/r/perplexity_ai/comments/11677ea/heres_how_you_can_set_perplexity_as_a_default/

@mako Totally understand. Have you tried the Perplexity app for iOS as a workaround? I haven’t, so mainly just curious about pros and cons

🆕 post -- How to install Firefox on a Chromebook the easy way

Want to install on a the easy way? Until this week, officially said there are two ways. Neither of them is ideal.

But there’s a third way now that Mozilla is offering Firefox packages for and Ubuntu Linux. Since on uses , you can directly download Firefox and quickly install it.

kevinctofel,
@kevinctofel@hachyderm.io avatar

@gary_berg The apt sources do not get updated with this method. You can add Mozilla’s repo in your sources, which is one of the other ways to do this. There is a “check for updates” button in the app settings so you can always manually get them.

kevinctofel,
@kevinctofel@hachyderm.io avatar

@MikeCerm Not sure about the GPU acceleration so I’ll have to dig around. All Linux apps on ChromeOS run with the same toolbar look and feel so that’s still a problem. Personally, I don’t mind because I don’t expect them to look the same: We’re running Linux in a VM / container within ChromeOS. And it helps me quickly see which apps are native and which are Linux.

A short history of the ASUS Eee PC and netbooks.

I never got one because, although cool, the limited use I'd have done wouldn't justify even the affordable price as I had no mobility or form factor needs.

kevinctofel,
@kevinctofel@hachyderm.io avatar

@amoroso That’s about right. Battery was in the hinge to keep it thin. I used that exact device to cover CES two years in a row because it was super portable by comparison to most devices at the time.

kevinctofel,
@kevinctofel@hachyderm.io avatar

@amoroso It was enough for about 2.5 to 3 hours of use so you had to work quickly! Eventually some of these had extended batteries to double the run time and I had a few of those as well. That was the nice thing: You could pull the battery pack and replace it with a fresh one if you had a spare.

@kevinctofel you heard anything on the Lenovo Duets being stuck again?

Mine's on v120.0.6099.235 (stable) and says that's it.

Thought we were on 121 stable at this point?

🆕 post -- ChromeOS 122 bringing Focus Mode to Chromebooks

A built-in timer is coming to . Here’s an early look at Focus Mode, now available as an experimental feature in 122.

https://www.aboutchromebooks.com/news/chromeos-122-focus-mode-to-chromebooks/

kevinctofel,
@kevinctofel@hachyderm.io avatar

@cyprianbeaze It’s a focusing technique:

“Now around 40 years old, the Pomodoro technique breaks up tasks into 25-30 minute intervals. You pick the most important task and focus on it for a short amount of time. Effectively, you remove all distractions from completing that task, or at the very least, on making progress.

The original concept from Francesco Cirillo used a kitchen-timer, shaped like a tomato. Hence the name “Pomodoro”, which is “Tomato” in Cirillo’s natural language of Italian.”
