Hey @jsnell - really appreciated your Samsung S9 5K monitor review. I totally understand why you returned it, given its price point. If you could get one for $700 or so, would that change your calculus? I’m happy with my Studio Display even if I think it’s overpriced but I want a second 5K screen for my M-series machines and can get the S9 on sale.

@film_girl @jsnell sigh tried to buy a refurbished one from Amazon "in excellent condition" and it came with a screen that undulated and rippled across the top and separated 3/4" from the top of the screen. Sigh.

@jsnell @film_girl I rarely try for refurbished items. I did get a lovely StarTech thunderbolt dock for 55$ refurbished and have used it for 18 months so far. Works very well. But.. this time I didn't luck out.

I can finally properly show off the Dice by PCalc prototype I built at the Apple Vision Pro lab in August!

This is quite far away from being an actual product, but it does look very pretty.

Dice, a banana, duck are dropped into a wooden tray.

In light of the recent spam wave, I'd like to show this email we send to new accounts that are flagged based on specific heuristics. With this, we filter about 80-90% of spam accounts and bots before they can bother the Fediverse.

If they match, we limit their account so they can't reach out to people who aren't following them. In case there's a false-positive, they still get to build a profile and post messages. They'll become visible when their appeal is processed.

I'm looking for a cheap or free provider that offers OpenID Connect (OIDC) for a handful of users, maybe a group or two. It'll hook into a small R&D Kubernetes cluster so I can tinker with RBAC roles.

Do you have any tips?

@ivory oh man I could have been using Ivory on my Mac all year. I thought my subscription didn't include mac and last time I tried to use Ivory on macOS it didn't let me publish so I gave up.

@ivory I did try using Mac Ivory immediately after it was released but it complained I needed to subscribe. And I already had a sub. So I was put off by subscription fatigue.

Spitball idea for iOS: When doing a screen recording, automatically turn on Do Not Disturb for the duration of the recording.

So many times when I’m recording my screen, say, to have a video to send a developer with a bug report, the recording gets ruined by an incoming notification.

I had a fun idea for a Minecraft project that required me to freeform-draw a sign with a white background.

As far as I know, the only way to do this is to frame a map of an area that looks like your intended "drawing" from above.

This is how far I've gotten so far with the white background. By the way, I'll need two of these side-by-side, since the design is rectangular…

Ice Cubes is now available as a proper macOS application! If you had the iOS app installed on your mac, you can remove it and install this one instead.

This is the first version. A lot of macOS-specific features will be added in the future!

    My currently plan for app releases this week is that Dice by PCalc is getting a bigger update with interactive widgets, and PCalc is just getting a basic compatibility update, with more to come there later in the year.

    I’ve gone off on so many tangents this summer with Vision Pro etc, and I don’t have much to show for it yet, so I’m going to (try to) focus on my mental and physical health rather than hitting all the Apple deadlines.
