@AllNewTypeFace @just_kitten I think this is really only happening on the Albury line - other services have likely seen a decent increase in patronage, but it's likely going to make rural services more viable in terms of numbers, and on the really popular routes hopefully a real increase in services. In 2019 I took rural PT to a bunch of different places in Victoria, East West and North from Melbourne, and only North was really even half way busy.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@plumbercraic @Thornburywitch there are already native Jack Jumpers that put people in hospital, adding these would be horrific.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@Thornburywitch yup they are in the Yarra Valley and assumedly other rural places too. Nasty.

Hypx, to Hydrogen
@Hypx@mastodon.social avatar

BEVs regularly are being powered by diesel generators. This is the truth: Just because something can be powered by green energy, doesn't mean it is. In fact, BEVs struggle to match on-site power demand with renewable energy availability. In reality, cars will end up being greener and a lot sooner too.

https://jalopnik.com/tesla-supercharger-location-diesel-generator-report-1850804146

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@Hypx @riggs7sct dude. give it up. Hydrogen does potentially have some use cases, but green hydrogen is still in its infancy, and weirdly your aren't differentiating green from regular hydrogen (which is currently in short supply and hydrogen vehicles are having to be taken off the road - not exactly a sales pitch). Meanwhile worldwide, renewables are ramping up swiftly, and already have the infrastructure in many places to immediately begin charging a good portion of EVs - I even know one place which is off-grid completely and ONLY has solar power, and they have a DC fast charger!

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@Hypx @riggs7sct ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ dude, it's at an intentional community. The whole place is off grid.

No, it doesn't work unless the sun is shining, which can be inconvenient. I've charged my BEV there myself, and I know the installer. There's no diesel backup.

BEVs became more viable once the battery technology changed from lead acid to various lithium (and cadmium) technologies. Better battery technologies are also on the cusp of commercialisation. Swapping out batteries is easy, increases the range massively from a 10yo vehicle. This will be the same in another 10 years.

I also read recently that the range on hydrogen vehicles is pitiful and they can need refilling after as little as 20km?

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@Hypx @riggs7sct https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/australia-news/2021/jun/04/where-will-i-fill-it-up-my-week-in-lockdown-with-a-toyota-hydrogen-powered-car

not looking very practical in my part of the world - filling stations being insane expensive means hardly any will be built, and the actual fuel is bloody expensive too.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@Hypx @riggs7sct you fail to address the issue of insanely large expense of filing stations. Who's going to build them? A 300kw EV charger isn't cheap, but nearly all EVs can charge from a domestic socket (and most will for usual daily use, ideally from solar either at home or work, or at the supermarket...) while fast chargers can and do break, as more are rolled out, then this issue becomes less. these are very safe, don't need a human attendant...

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@Hypx @riggs7sct sorry, I cant find the article I read, you are right most hydrogen cars do have good range, it must have been one badly designed car.

here explains the issues with hydrogen in much greater detail:

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@Hypx @riggs7sct funny how your only argument is "it's all propaganda!1elebentyone"... you're as bad as NuclearBros. give it up. Hydrogen is potentially useful in some scale applications but it's never going to become mainstream EV, because of the issues with provisioning which are well documented.

Every single house is an EV charging station. Nothing else can compete with that.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@Hypx @riggs7sct err... that doesn't make that argument, at least not cogently, and in fact makes the argument clearly that EVs are more efficient and more suitable for short range applications? Why are you sending to an article that backs up my argument, not yours? ๐Ÿ˜‚

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@Hypx @riggs7sct your argument is soooooo tired, it's the same usual crap from people that don't understand how fast the grid is decarbonising, and the fact that many EV owners already have their own solar and charge from it where possible. Green hydrogen could actually be quite useful as a fuel for decarbonising storage energy and I think there's some trial in Western Australia doing this for a small town, I've seen some application to use fuel cells instead of batteries in off grid power applications even at domestic scale. I'm not against hydrogen per se, it's just much better at scale and doesn't have the efficiency or convenience of BEVs.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@Hypx @riggs7sct Sure, if better technology comes I'll happily adopt, but it needs to be more efficient and more convenient. Hydrogen is neither of these.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@Hypx @riggs7sct you really can't bear the idea that your pet favourite technology has any issues at all, and completely ignore any raised - and they are all valid queries, yet your only response is sticking your fingers in your ears and screaming "la la can't hear you". It's really tiring.

I've already pointed out hydrogen use cases that make sense: these are largely industrial and commercial. The only article you linked confirmed many arguments AGAINST hydrogen in domestic use, for goodness sake. I really wouldn't mind if you actually had and evidence, but you don't, you just keep claiming you do.

Even a sealion would be better than this, honestly.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@Hypx @riggs7sct I am all for technology that gets us to true zero emissions as far as possible. I hope the hydrogen power projects prove viable, and if they do then it should be feasible for excess renewables to be part of the mix in creating static HFCs that BEVs can charge from. I think that is far more likely the direction things may go, as it is more efficient use of renewables to charge EVs directly as much as possible, and only go to making hydrogen when there's no other option for storage.

As it is BEVs are looking to be a major ingredient in decarbonising the grid, and taking fossil fuel power stations off line for good, once enough V2G is enabled. The first test of this in Australia went live in South Australia last month - I'm hoping we get a similar facility in Victoria as my car is one of the types which can immediately be used =)

Addendum: tragically, a death has happened at the event. This is no longer funny.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@absamma @rabbijill @fifilamoura I've read reports that toilets have been serviced overnight. There's minimal movement but it looks like they are maintaining health and safety. People are required to bring all the food and water they need for the event and most people would have some kind of container they could use for a toilet in an emergency at their camp.

The difficulty will be some people needing to have left during the time the gates have been closed to get back to responsibilities after the event, I imagine that's partly why Diplo and Chris Rock walked out though they might simply have been for the press/shits n giggles. It even says on BM website walking out is allowed and there are free shuttles during daylight hours to get people to Reno. I hope people who've walked out have a plan for getting their gear / vehicles home, I imagine with some camps there will be some who don't have urgent responsibilities who can stay until the conditions are ok to drive, and others who need to leave asap.

๐Ÿ†• blog! โ€œSome thoughts on Mastodon searchโ€

The latest version of Mastodon includes search functionality. It's early days, but seems to work pretty well. Here are some of the interesting things I found when using it. Search is complex - expectations I don't mean the act of searching a database - that's routine - but I mean it is socially complex. Lots [โ€ฆ]

@Edent I've been having thoughts on search for a LONG time (decades... https://drunkdna.livejournal.com/69280.html ... this is probably my favourite thing ever said about me ever online and I'm impressed it's still there!) and it's safe to say I am VERY pro-search, but also pro-consent and individuals having granular choices around privacy everywhere.

I think the ability to make private posts OR public posts from the same account already solves the biggest and clearest divide there, but further granularity is not a bad thing, though the more complex, the more daunting for many in trying to navigate using any new app or site. It's tricky.

While it's obvious that it's impossible to search /eberything/ (but Google sure used to do a good job a decade or two ago, and we still have the Wayback Engine...) I'm very interested to see how search develops in Fedi. I think hashtags are doing an ok job at making things discoverable by topic, and it's been interesting to see how different sites have tackled discoverability. You gave a really good overview in your post. Kudos!

@TinyBreak @Nath I had my daughter in daycare at 3 months (1 day a week) and she caught EVERYTHING in the first year. I got about half the things, a milder version, but with the 3 gastros I was SO grateful for my standing Zofran script as it would have been awful without.

This year so far (she's now almost 2), 3 relatively mild colds (touch wood), I know there will be more things but I vaguely hope the experience of covid has made a tiny dent in behaviour so there is a bit less spread.

The policies at childcare have definitely not swung back to precovid norms, so they are stricter now than before regarding temperature, diarrhoea etc and exclusions generally. So I think maybe that is helping a little? The immune system still gets a workout, but I've been expecting to be much sicker this year than so far has turned out.

Well, good news: people are working on them! And it's apparently fucking difficult. But they are making progress!

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@grishka @narF @leighms never mind, I just logged in again, I was sure it wasn't visible when I first explored but I can see it now (I am using mobile) =)

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@grishka @narF @leighms cool! I lived for many years without hashtags, if you have free text search they aren't strictly necessary anyway, especially if it's not microblogging where space is limited.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@grishka @narF @leighms ah, OK, maybe a bit more like LiveJournal then? They never implemented search (at least not while I was still paying attention) , though they did allow searching by interests early on, which I think at the time was fairly innovative. I do like being able to follow hashtags here in Fedi though, and appreciate seeing things I wouldn't otherwise, which is a lot like being able to search interests.
