Let's decouple our ideas of innate human value from jobs, mmk?

@Thornburywitch @bot001 one of the nice things about battery whippetsnappers are that they are a bit quieter than the nasty 2 stroke ones. Much easier to start, too!

Something I love about Oslo: This city is incredibly quiet.

Lots of people are walking/biking/scooting. And most vehicles are electric, while speed limits are typically 30 km/hr (19 mph), so engine/tire noise is negligible.

A reminder that cities aren't loud; cars are loud.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@jfmezei @davidzipper @notjustbikes I'm currently house sitting in a suburb in Melbourne and the house is on a (smallish) hill and the motorway is less than a kilometre away. I remember in the first 24 hours hearing a background noise which was more noticeable in the morning, and realised it was the motorway. It's a dull roar that I have become used to, but look forward to not having when I go back to my house.

ok, I didn't believe this was real until I went to confirm.

Seriously people?

I'm going to stop following people here who actively promote bluesky.

Why on earth would you want to go there??? This is just beyond parody. But it's... real 🀯

Kid had a red (unicorn) t-shirt on today, and was wearing Spiderman sneakers. She has long hair, and yet all the moms at the playground immediately defaulted to calling her a little boy.

The whole thing fascinates me. My mom tells me you can only find red and blue at rhe boys' section at the store. I am amazed at how gender coded kids' clothing is... πŸ˜†

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@kym @TarkabarkaHolgy my daughter has had a lot of grey in her wardrobe and that seems to confuse the heck out of people too.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@TarkabarkaHolgy @kym yeah, it probably depends a bit on your location, I do see more boys with long hair these days, and more parents generally allowing kids to experiment with hair based on the child's preferences, so even younger girls with quite boyish cuts. I mostly have fairly gender neutral clothes for my daughter but I do put her hair in pigtails most of the time (it keeps hair out of her face, and yes it's cute), and regardless of clothes that tends to have people gender her as female.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@TarkabarkaHolgy @kym my daughter always hates having her hair brushed, she only has gentle waves rather than tight curls, so it isn't too hard to put it up, and keeps it a bit neater than when I have it out. I do braids sometimes as well. But yeah those hairstyles are I guess are more strongly gendered than just long or short hair.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@TarkabarkaHolgy @kym absolutely. and quite funny given colours are not absolute trends... and completely the opposite 100 years ago!

kudra,

@wscholermann @bot001 well given the origins were for rich people (and the children of rich people) to do something with their spare time, it explains why quite a few degrees aren't much use. But they do help you understand why things are the way they are. Just tough titties if you don't have independent wealth to sustain you after you work this out.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@Seagoon_ there seems to be conflicting information online but most universities seem to exist separate to religious orders, despite historically being very heavily influenced by them at times.

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@Seagoon_ yes, but he could only afford science to become a vocation because he was the son of a wealthy financier.

"The world's first university, The University of Al Qarawiynn, was founded in 895 CE by a woman named Fatima al-Fihri. She used her inheritance to form a large mosque with an associated school"

... so the world's first university apparently started by a woman of leisure who assumedly had a hefty inheritance if she could afford to start a University.

Even Siddhartha Gautama was a nobleman.

The luxury to spend time thinking and learning has traditionally been afforded to the wealthy, not the working class, and so when young folks now go to uni and feel like it was a scam, it's worth noting this history.

Contemplating making a legit "call out" video for all the leftist (in this case it feels more like "leftist") youTubers who can't be bothered to so much as mention the fediverse.

It makes me kinda angry to hear laments and critiques of "corporate social media" -- but then there is an action one could take-- it's far from perfect- but it's here.

Maybe I shouldn't be angry about it, just start it that way to uh... get attention? Yeah.

IDK if anyone will listen- but, it needs to be said, right?

kudra,

@esther @futurebird @funkula I've bought more art on Fedi than anywhere for years. I've found really high quality artists directly here, without even trying.

kudra,

@goodviking @bot001 those private scooters are almost certainly over the legal limit, which I think is 250w, but you can buy them for "off road" use with larger motors. nobody checks of course, but the scooter share companies have to offer legal vehicles for sure.

@StudChud @calhoon2005 I'm going to bet it was a Starlink satellite, based on this:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/news.yahoo.com/amphtml/space-news-starlink-satellites-orbit-pink-moon-richard-branson-nasa-165913306.html

Might be able to verify if people using Starlink lost internet...

Expert reckons space junk, which could definitely include a Starlink. Jelly & wish I had seen it too, not like I wasn't getting woken up almost hourly last night by either cat or toddler. Hmph.

@Eagle @TinyBreak and if you don't have it yet get a standing script for Ondasetron from your GP. Saved my ass 3 times in the first 12 months of my daughters many illnesses (yes, pretty much everything came from childcare, possibly one from swimming class) the one time I didn't have it with me was miserable and the first time I had worshipped at the porcelain throne since pregnancy (which, fortunately, I only had to once... yes I was very lucky)..

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@Duenan @goodviking expert reckons space junk not meteor, my bet is Starlink

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@calhoon2005
my conjecture is based also on the fact that's been a peak in solar activity, a, G1-G2 level event:

https://www.sws.bom.gov.au/Geophysical/2/1

which has potential to knock out satellites unintentionally, as opposed to expected launch stages, though the path for that seems to make potential sense too.

Most unintended re-entries of Starlink seem to be more dramatic with disintegration, so a different kind of item eg Russian, might well make sense, but here's a confirmed Starlink satellite entering over Puerto Rico, for comparison:

https://youtu.be/a7KUSN89-A0

Anyone else here old enough to remember Skylab??

kudra,
@kudra@aus.social avatar

@Pilk @prime_factor raises eyebrow

This is the Fediverse. I'm hoping that the random Twitter-esque moments that we wonder who else local experienced something become a default here, as there is a strong geographic focus already with instances being distributed and located all over the world.

    @robert_p_king I remember being told about a convenience store in the Australian outback which derived the vast majority of its turnover from tobacco sales, it was a shockingly large amount of money for a small business (I honestly can't remember exactly how much but it might have been in the order of $10,000 a day...) So yes even though smoking is on the way out, I believe many businesses would be at risk if they could no longer sell the most addictive substance that is legal.

    Vapes are only mildly better and may have as yet unknown complications, they are still addictive.

    But then so is sugar...

    I don't think I have a solution, other than a 😬

    Oh, one Fedi project that is doing BOTH of these but it's looking like it's still just in testing, is which is being developed by a former VKontacte & Telegram employee, definitely one to watch.
