Update: Turns out I must have searched wrong. It is available.

I would love to read this book. But it is not available as an EPUB anywhere, so it’s unlikely I will ever read this book.

(No, really, I buy hardcovers and then I put them on a shelf, unread or half-read. I find “real” books very uncomfortable.)

@yatil It's showing up on a couple of the bigger ebook marketplaces (amazon, ebooks.com) for me (in the UK) - wonder if it's to do with your location?

lewis,

@yatil Yeah I was hesitant to suggest them for those reasons 😅

Glad you've found it though!

O ring time!

What's the point in buying a keyboard with quiet brown switches if I end up clackity-clacking anyway as the key hits the bottom of the downstroke?

Seems to be working :)

@robb Since you were posting about Webmentions recently, any thoughts on this? https://github.com/LewisDaleUK/eleventy-plugin-activity-pub

I'm slowly working to migrate my WP blog to 11ty, but I think the ActivityPub integration of WP is really cool right now and would like not to give that up if I don’t have to.

lewis,
@lewis@social.lol avatar

@robb @ehler I’m not, unfortunately, and the plugin hasn’t really been maintained in a while. When I was actively pushing using AP it was using Netlify functions - I think the Wordpress implementation is more complete

🆕 blog! “Rebuilding FourSquare for ActivityPub using OpenStreetMap”

I used to like the original FourSquare. The "mayor" stuff was a bit silly, and my friends never left that many reviews, but I loved being able to signal to my friends "I am at this cool museum" or "We're at this pub if you want to meet" or "Spendi…

@Edent @Floppy @manyfold @robb wrote a blog post on implementing his own ActivityPub server in PHP (https://rknight.me/blog/building-an-activitypub-server/) - it includes a section on validating the signatures, because I think it was a major pain in the arse for him too (source code: https://github.com/rknightuk/bugle/blob/main/app/Services/HttpSignature.php)

What do people use for bookmarking articles/sites to read later? My current strategy of “open in new tab and hope I remember before it auto-archives” isn’t working out for me, shockingly

lewis,
@lewis@social.lol avatar

@falken They do in Arc. It's a configurable setting, but I keep it active because otherwise I’ll have 5k tabs open

I've been using these “bookmark cards" in Ghost https://ghost.org/help/cards/#bookmark. They expand links into a rich format, like on Slack etc. Great for making links more engaging, however they come with some caveats.

For one they look like a complete mess in RSS readers (see screenshot). Secondly this must be really annoying for screen readers as I presume all of this is announced when focusing the link.

Tempted to move this to client JS, which removes it from my RSS and allows me to control markup more 🤔

lewis,
@lewis@social.lol avatar

@DavidDarnes Could you do some preprocessing that generates an image of it and serves that instead (or as a placeholder & then if JS is present, populate it with something richer?), provided there’s a way to make the alt text into something that’s not equally terrible?

lewis, to random
@lewis@social.lol avatar

Just went to have a look at the website for the Giro D'Italia (cycling race like the Tour de France, for those that don't know).

It's like a masterclass in how to make an inaccessible website

  • Images without alt text
  • Icons that are just <divs> with a background image applied in CSS
  • "Buttons" are just <span> that show/hide content using onClick Javascript handlers
  • Keyboard navigation is nearly impossible, no focus indicators anywhere
  • Disabling Javascript breaks nearly everything
