RL_Dane, to rust

Why is it that people's reaction to is either cult-level positive or Ted Cruz-level disgust?

I don't think I've heard more than a single person basically say, "Yeah, Rust is ok, but I like X better because Y." ;)

ljs,
@ljs@social.kernel.org avatar

@aja @RL_Dane @jbowen I hate to do a drive by comment that seems critical but I have to say I have always HATED that article. Graham has a tendency to be 50% very insightful and 50% profoundly wrong.

Note that more or less NONE of the y-com startups use lisp, and if the claims in that article are true about development speed yada yada you'd think he'd be interested in that...

I'ts more like, he likes lisp, he used it, he assumed some things, he wrote about those things.

This is sort of an aside from the language conversation and more a 'PG is not a reliable narrator' comment :) lisp is very cool, rust seems very cool. But yeah, that article, not a fan.

Got a leaflet through the door suggesting we vote for the Heritage Party loonies in our local elections today. That won’t happen.

@popey I wonder who will be on the ballot for pirbright... :)

Anonymous HN commenter on Amazon's anti-piracy effort: "... I had to fight hard to get even a proof of concept project greenlit.

There was exteme organizational disinterest - partly for a bad but predictable reason (we made a lot of money off these fraudsters) and partly for a reason so bad it still makes me cringe (money recovered from identified fraudsters went into the balance sheet of a different SVP's org, so our org viewed it as a waste of time) ..."

@danluu and this is why I develop my book in private.

(I fully expect it to be defrauded the second it's out if it's even minimally successful on any level whatsoever, that I just throw up my arms and have to accept, but try to loudly proclaim that I am the one writing it at least)

I don't want to turn this into a long series of moans but christ, whatsapp web is falling apart. And I super rely on it :(

the infamous 'waiting for this message' thing they do now, probably for some stupid security reason (god I hate security), but also now just missing a ton of messages, randomly.

I love whatsapp but guys, jesus, honestly.

When you see Starbucks in Czechia just keep walking. There’s probably an amazing local cafe around the corner….

Like Coffee Fusion! I had a delicious Aeropress there while prepping for some stuff. It was so fresh and the sweetness in the beans really popped. I didn’t even add sugar!

Highly recommended for your fix.

A tray with freshly poured coffee and water. I’m the background is a Linux laptop running KDE Plasma and a terminal window.

@killyourfm no sorry @vbabka informs me that starbucks is the only decent coffee in Czechia. He said the rest were a 'national embarrassment' or something I think

ljs,

@vbabka @killyourfm I may have misremembered what Vlasta said, but he definitely did say 'drink only pilsner urquell the rest are a national embarrassment', that I am sure of

Great, my prodding helped to get another fix quickly into mainline. Without it the fix would likely have lingered in development trees for a while and only have reached users of stable in three or four weeks from now; now it will likely be in next weeks releases. \o/

Thx @toke for asking Linus to pull this directly, much appreciated!

@kernellogger @toke no I think the 'herding cats' analogy works very well for kernel people (and coders as a whole really). As somebody who has 4 cats, I can confirm its veracity :)
