Healthcare in America is Broken, part eleventy-seven

Driving to Mexico to have extensive dental work done. (I put off too many visits during the pandemic but can no longer do so because I lost a crown a few days ago.) It's ~60% cheaper to have the work done there by dentists accredited by the same orgs as US dentists. I could fly and stay in a 4-star hotel and still come out ahead.

To pass the time I'll be listening to the latest from @pluralistic — "Red Team Blues" on libro.fm

@kims @pluralistic I've heard about companies that specialise in this. You pay an amount significantly less than what people would have to pay for some healthcare in the US, and they arrange a vacation for you in some country, great hotels etc, and they give you the medical service you need and it's still cheaper. India and Thailand were two places I seem to recall being mentioned.

@foo That's really neat. I love it how the printer seems to be almost designed to print toots. A printer for toots, or prooter if you like.

It appears to replace å with a. Doesn't these printers often use ISO8859-1?

@francis @bjoernstaerk Sydafrika har mer än 35 olika språk och 11 officiella språk. Om du vill jämföra hur olika länder hanterar flera officiella språk så kan det vara ett ställe att börja.

Jag tror dock att den norska situationen är rätt så unik i det att det inte är specifika språk man försöker bevara undan en kontinuitet. Två byar intill varandra kan tala samma dialekt med vissa små skillnader, men nu längre bort man kommer desto större blir skillnaderna och till slut är det ett annat språk.

Detta är förstås hur språk utvecklas överallt men jag de flesta länder försöker skydda de individuella språken, inte kontinuiteten självt.

@francis @bjoernstaerk I Sverige så försökte SVT under många år (ända fram till detta årtionde tror jag, jag flyttade från Sverige för över 15 år sedan så jag har inte full koll längre) minimera mängden dialekt som användes i TV och radio. I stort sett alla pratade standardsvenska och det bildades ett stigma kring dialekt där man kunde uppfattas som dum om man pratade med en kraftig dialekt.

SVT:s officiella ställning har ändrats nu, men eftersom jag inte tittar eller lyssnar på svensk media särkilt ofta längre kan jag inte säga om det skett någon stor förändring på detta området.

När jag letade efter material omkring samiskan så hittade jag också ett dokument från Språkkampanjrådet, och jag citerar från kapitel 6.4:

Vad frågan gäller är hur de uppfattar sin etnicitet. Det är ur känslan av etnisk avskildhet och särskildhet som medvetenheten om det egna språket som viktig kulturbärare växer fram, liksom viljan att odla och utveckla detta språk mot ett fungerande standardiserat språk. Olika varieteters status har ofta haft påtagliga konsekvenser. Dialekttalande har särskilt under tidigare skeden ibland betraktat sina varieteter som degenererade till skillnad från det ”riktiga” standardspråket. Ett sådant synsätt kommer förstås inte ursprungligen från dialekttalarna själva, utan emanerar från dem som talar standardvarieteten. På grund av att den dominerande gruppen ofta har hegemoni i fråga om vilka uppfattningar som betraktas som riktiga i ett samhälle (jfr Philipson,1992), överförs attityder från standardspråktalande till dialekttalande. Det är i den process som leder till stigmatisering av befolkningsgrupper som också stigmatisering av deras språk uppstår.

    @jens There used to be a Swedish (which has the same rules as German) radio (or was it TV?) when I was a kid whose entire purpose was the use this technique to create new words.

    The host gave one of the contestants a description of something, and the contestant needed to describe it using a single word, and if the others got it right they got points.

    Some really creative constructions came out of that show, some of which stretch the definition of "word". Sure, there were no spaces in there, so I guess it counts. 🙂

    @libreoffice @tomjwatson SVG icons definitely looks better. Why is that not the default? The defaults looked pretty bad on my Fedora.

    The tabbed interface though, ouch, somewhat unpleasant to use. Please don't remove the standard menus.
