I was somewhat skeptical of multi-color prints on the Bambu Lab printers using the AMS but now that I've started to design things I'm trying to be efficient and I've got it down to a single color change after the first layer and there is no tower of wasted filament.

For these prints it's just a single layer of text on the bottom but I'm pleased with the very minimal print time it adds and almost zero waste.

makergeek,
@makergeek@hometech.social avatar

@rasterweb agreed, bottom or top can be effective. I really like being able to trivially flip between material types. Using pla as an interface layer on petg supports is pretty cool too
But you have to be very careful on the settings lest you waste a ton of filament

What do you think? My theory is that I'll be better at keeping my quick change tooling in order and off the workbench

I really love my plasma cutter. Super fast and surprisingly clean way to cut steel.
I needed to create clearance for a large diameter bearing. Quick laser cutter job to make a template then boom, a few seconds with the plasma cutter. Job done

Very pleased to discover it was actually quite easy to flash my Google WiFi mesh things over to openWrt. I'm enjoying having all the bells and whistles to play with and access to all the low level information.
Wondering if there is something like this for my nest thermostats. I'd really prefer to be able to get the data without going via the cloud and Google annoying API nonsense.

Building robots never gets old. Finished the tilt axis tonight. I was worried it would struggle with the weight of the camera at 90 degrees. But it worked great!

@trevorflowers I use the webcam to do Glyph detection to drive automatic motion tracking. I have a bunch of different glyphs that represent different stuff. It can be faster to make videos if I can just have the camera track dynamically within some constraints. I have one I can wear on a lanyard that the camera keeps centred in the bottom third which tends to keep reasonable framing on me.

Going down a rabbit hole on quadrature signals for digital scales. The dro on my lathe died today because the power converter blew a fuse(?) Fortunately the main board just needs 5V so I could splice in a usb charger. But now I'm wondering about reading the signals into a controller... If I can read the signals and drive a stepper then I'd have a full feedback loop. It would provide some interesting options.

To upgrade from crocodile clips to something a bit more permanent. I bought this usb socket tail and 3d printed a mounting plate to replace the old mains socket

Oddly satisfying... I started this design a couple of years ago and promised myself I'd come back to it. The first version was much more bulky but this version is pretty slick and feels and sounds great to use.
I'm using this for a pen. But it's basically a quick release mechanism with about 5mm of travel that could be applied to other switches.

Took about a month, what started as a simulation is now reality.
Now I have no more excuses to not tidy my study

REMINDER: ChatGPT, Stable Diffusion, and other large trained neural models are NOT "artificial intelligence", they're just stochastic parrots, remixing and regurgitating what they've been fed. There's no theory-of-mind involved, so no understanding: there's no "there" there. (A real live parrot exhibits more intelligence than this.)

Don't call it AI; call it parrot-tech. That way you'll have a better perspective on what it can (and can't) do.

makergeek,
@makergeek@hometech.social avatar

@cstross true, but also they can be a damn sight more impressive than just parrots. The kind of queries that chatgpt can process and return useful responses for are pretty amazing.
They are not a.i in any meaningful way but they are a step change in how useful interactive search can be.

Do I know any infosec folks here? Curious how common the whole ssl intercept and traffic decrypt pattern is? Even for server workload or just users?
We have a kubernetes setup and it seems like a lot of work and hassle to make everything in containers know about a custom CA. Perhaps I'm missing something but it's easier for me to believe most companies aren't doing this.

I know I probably shouldn't want to be advertised to more... But it baffles me that Amazon still haven't figured out that I should be able to pause any movie or TV show and have a run down of every product in the scene and a way to buy it. Vehicles, outfits, accessories, decorations, furniture. You name it. None of that stuff makes it into a scene without someone choosing to put it there. Why not build a database of that info and link it all up?

makergeek,
@makergeek@hometech.social avatar

@bornach one assumes that in a world where Amazon is the streaming service and the content producer that at the very least for their stuff it would link to Amazon products. But I'd be fine with everything having links to multiple budget level options.
If we have to live in a world of advertising to me then at least integrate it properly with the content.
My wife and I laugh every time a TV show from a certain era has a very clumsily placed car ad in the middle, but the theory wasn't terrible

Today's good deed. Someone on Instagram asked if anyone could help make something on a metal lathe. I volunteered.
Fairly simple, an 8mm shaft that will fit into regular bearings. And a 9.5mm end that is going to be threaded 3/8x24.
I would have threaded it myself, but I don't have any Imperial stuff to check it against.
I made two so they have a spare to practice the threading on.
The first also revealed a slight misalignment in my tailstock. So the 8mm section tapered a little. Now fixed

Paranoid or careful? Today I finished setting up a system that loads a website (that of my employer) downloads all the page resources, including the JavaScript that gets injected by a partner for legitimate reasons, then compares this to a known approved copy of those resources. Just in case someone is able to exploit the third party at a row to injecting malicious code into our website.

@Maker_of_Things @makershour if I'm honest with myself it's when I'm unsure what I'm doing and if it will work. Anything where I'm afraid I'll mess it up. Or I'm not totally sold on my design.
I try first to identify that I'm procrastinating and say out loud why that is. Then maybe from there try to figure out if any of those factors will change without me just starting.

I'm using an unholy combination of GPIO and PIO right now, writing using PIO, and reading via GPIO, and dynamically switching the clock pin between the two subsystems.

It works, but this sure feels like the sort of thing that will break across IC revisions...

makergeek,
@makergeek@hometech.social avatar

@ve7fim what hardware are you working with? What is this trying to do? Looks like a cool scope.

Weekends are too damn short! And everything takes so long to develop and setup. I'm super happy with how my coffee carrier design went. And all the time it took to stop the website and the store and such was worth it because at least one of you amazing mastadon folk bought one!.
But that's just one thing that consumed a whole weekend, I also want to spend more time practicing with my electronic leadscrew controller, building devices for homeAssistant... How do you fit your projects around work?

makergeek, to random
@makergeek@hometech.social avatar

Ok mastadon, just for you. A look at a design I've been working on. I'm looking to set up to sell these and their more simple 2 drink brethren. Hoping to finish getting my website setup properly before I make more of an effort to see if there is any interest. If nothing else I am pretty pleased with this design.

But the real question is will anyone else want one?

@thegibson I once did the classic rm -rf * a couple of layers too high on my work pc. I was actually impressed by how graceful Linux dropped out X windows once I deleted it and left me at a command line.
Oh and I managed to delete a domain controller in our AWS account along with the server I intended to delete. Learned all about why deletion protection is a thing :-) fortunately I had only just finished building it so it was not as bad as it could have been.
