#YouMightHaveADHD if you order a repair kit from iFixit to change the battery in your phone, leave the box somewhere, and promptly ignore it for nearly 4 months before even opening the box

Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck

Number 6 literally stopped me in my tracks because it's exactly how I feel all the fucking time.

Having a job has always felt more like a threat than an opportunity to me. Especially as I've been getting paid more over time, and the implied increase in responsibility that goes along with that.

The more successful I've been, the more I start to panic that I'm going to fuck it up and lose it all.

@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

(Which, of course, is exactly what's happening right now. Turns out chronic anxiety is not a productive strategy)

Claustrophobia is an apt analogy to how it feels. I've increasingly felt trapped by my job — by the entire concept of having "a job". Especially since transitioning, because so much of who I am is now dependent upon lifelong healthcare access, which in the US basically means you must be employed.

I was just thinking about how I don't really know what a healthy and productive life looks like with my particular flavor of neurodiversity. Even just with my #ADHD, I don't know what my life would look like if I were able to cope with it in a healthy and sustainable manner.

I have no idea what I'm shooting for. No model to emulate. I have no idea what a good day should look like.

The only mental reference I have is the neurotypical stereotype, which I cannot maintain for any length of time.

Everytime Pi Day rolls around (har har), there's always comments about how Americans are weird for using the mm/dd/yyyy format for dates, while much of the rest of the world uses dd/mm/yyyy.

Hot take: both formats suck and should be replaced by the superior yyyy/mm/dd

holyramenempire,
@holyramenempire@kolektiva.social avatar

@malcircuit My hot take: multiple commonly accepted date formats give us more holidays to celebrate.

We could get away from our blood-soaked national holidays and celebrate stuff like "Pi Day" and "Mario Day" worldwide. I think "idk that's how some people write today's date" is a perfectly good reason to have a party!

I like that format (using "-" instead of "/") because if I use it when naming computer files, the files will automatically be in chronological order when sorted alphabetically.

This is the fruit of four-ish nights worth of images from my telescope. Behold, M101, the Pinwheel Galaxy.

Actually a little disappointed in it, to be honest. Light pollution really limits what I can do. I feel like I need 10x as much data to get a clear image. Also thinking that I'm probably not processing the data as well as I could. There's like infinite settings in PixInsight and I don't have any idea what most of them do.

Immediately runs to buy BlurXterminator

The fact that it claimed to be "AI-powered" made me extremely skeptical of BlurXterminator, but now that I understand how this tool works on a technical level, I'm sold.

Currently browsing Google Scholar to see whether it's possible to measure and model light pollution at a specific location in such a way to be able to calibrate it away.

Probably more trouble than it's worth (like most of my ideas), but I'm intrigued by the possibility.

@malcircuit away, no.

but you can calculate the most perfect exposure length that maximizes signal vs noise.

Them: All of these new regulations could make cars to expensive for the average consumer.

Me: Maybe that's the way it should always have been.

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

Them: But that's not a good thing! I need a car to survive!

Me: Yeah, and who made the world that way? Why is a $40k, 3000 lb steel and plastic semi-autonomous behemoth the only practical method for transportation and getting necessities like groceries? Who made that decision?

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

Them: We can't bulld trains! That would be so expensive!

Me: Please remind me again how much of our tax dollars we spend as a country on cleaning, repairing, repaving, and improving existing roadways? Remind me again how many people die on roadways every year? What about the healthcare cost of exhaust, dust, and other pollution from cars? Time lost in traffic? What's the economic impact of all of that?

Did the überstack of all of the M81 data I have from the past several weeks. It worked out pretty well! So much cleaner.

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

Part of me is still like, "Keep tweaking it! You can make it better!" but at this point it would be only marginal improvements and probably not worth the effort.

It's probably the best image I've made so far. I've done enough.

Many years ago, I attended painting therapy, where I had to learn to finish at exactly that point and acknowledge my achievements.
The moment, when adding more colors would only make it grayer and grayer and wash out everything.

I think, this is a great picture. The longer I look at it, the more structures get visible.

@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

I realized what it is about the eclipse image set that makes it so challenging to find and use tools to align them all.

In many cases with astro images, the goal is stacking, i.e., aligning a feature of interest across multiple images where that feature is positioned arbitrarily. In effect, you're "solving" for a single, static variable, and assuming anything that doesn't correlate with it is noise and can be safely eliminated.

/1

malcircuit,
@malcircuit@thingy.social avatar

@thomasfuchs Like I said, I understand that's the most efficient and obviously accurate method. I'm contemplating whether there might be a more sophisticated, computationally intensive way to get similar results from a single set of images.

As in, there's a lot of additional information (the star field as a reference, manually entered position of the comet in the image, the comet ephemeris data, etc) that maybe could be leveraged to tease out the comet image? Just idle speculation.

thomasfuchs,
@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io avatar

@malcircuit probably not because you would have to remove the comet to stack just stars; which likely overpowers stars in many areas of the image in subs (it’s basically acting like bad light pollution).

You can still try of course, just stack the subs registered on stars and grab star image from the stack via StarX.

Then remove stars from all subs and stack subs registered on comet.

Combine.

FINALLY got some clear skies!

I managed to get some images of comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, which I didn't even know about until I saw it in the Tonight's Best list in ASIair.

Currently capturing images of M81 and M82.

Here's the Live stack of the comet, and the galaxies. The fully processed images are incoming whenever I can figure out how to properly stack comet images lol
