I talked about #marketing, mental health, #BPD, and emotional resonance.
Sometimes, failure feels like the safest option. Our present might suck and our pain might be unpleasant, but it’s familiar. We know how much our reality hurts. But a better future? That’s strange, new, and uncertain.
@mariyadelano I haven’t appeared on your blog for a long time, and in general I haven’t visited Mastodon much. I had a period of activity in Mastodon, then a pause. Maybe I'll be more active again soon. As for your post, you know how to write on the border between business and depression like no one else. ))
If a client has already paid us and gotten most of / all of the work submitted and they are still smiling and happily chatting with us about that work - I feel like we've succeeded.
I can’t support #Substack in light of their announcement today. They have a choice whether to support fascist content, and acting like they are forced to platform these views is unacceptable.
I am planning to move my newsletter to a different platform, and will be working on figuring out the migration the rest of this week. I am very relieved that I chose to build my platform as a newsletter, since I own my audience and can take my subscriber list with me.
Sigh tried to get my ID upgraded to a REAL ID, which requires checking my immigration status. Even though I’m a permanent resident apparently immigration hasn’t been great at updating DMV’s info so the system doesn’t have any records of me having any work authorization ever lol
Very weird looking at a screen saying “Mariya Delano is not authorized to work” while holding a valid green card, extension letter, and a Social Security confirmation of my work authorization 🤷♀️
You will need some form of valid federal ID EVENTUALLY to fly whenever they stop granting extensions. But a passport or green card or Global Entry or any other sort of federal ID works fine for that too.
@JessTheUnstill yeah I know. By the time that the requirement is set to kick in (May 2025) I should actually be getting citizenship, so fighting over it right now isn’t worth much
I’m not one of those people who are afraid of doing math. I’ve done advanced math classes and I was a physics major for two years in undergrad, I’m not scared of math as a concept.
But yet the second I see a spreadsheet for any kind of financial calculations my brain blanks out and fails to process anything I’m looking at and I feel very stupid.
Sincerely, a business owner who is having to put financial projections together because I’m about to get acquired oh boy.
@mariyadelano Yep. For me, math about my business invariably leads to questions about whether I'm doing the right thing, and comparing to some theoretical FAANG W2 gig.
@mariyadelano Possibly because when it becomes money it becomes real (or realer). It may also just be a lack of domain interest on your part, if you’ve had the same reaction to others’ financials, but if it’s yours in particular you respond to this way, I’d say it could be a reaction based on it being more concrete and consequential.
Money is an abstraction, just like other forms of math, but it’s a real abstraction.
“We also plan to make it so replies from people in the Fediverse can show up for people posting from Threads to the Fediverse. It's a bad experience now that I have to leave the Threads app to see replies I'm getting from the broader community.”
What's the difference between a human stealing your work or #AI?
There isn't one. #Plagiarism is always done by humans when they take credit for the work of other humans.
Think of AI as a high-tech blender. A blender doesn’t create anything new. It simply puts some pre-existing substance in a different form.
If you make a carrot smoothie, can you say that you grew those carrots? The same could be said for #content created with AI.
@mariyadelano Do you think that is the reason why they are pretending that it’s AI? (By all means, the thing is not intellectual, it’s an algorithm created by developers)
@mikolasan I can’t say for everyone but it feels like it’s the motivation for some. I would say I think most people are just not thinking past the AI label too much since that’s how everyone else is talking about it. Also, so many of us have imagined robots to be real with sci-fi, it’s easy to imagine that these programs are truly intelligent.
