@rakyat basically... yes. Love this balance of cooking with the heart (and heat!) with the rational mechanics.

@hailey showed me the hifiberry and now im upset about how 'hifi' audio is advertised AGAIN

martin_piper,
@martin_piper@mastodon.social avatar

@jacqueline they need to measure that from a completed device, not the component numbers.

One thing they don't you up front when you get into reverse engineering is how much of your life will be taken up by worrying about stacks

martin_piper,

@foone and on Windows MSVC dll or static or single or multithread runtime

FTDI: Yes FT232H can do SPI, see our advertising that says so, but by default with a blank EEPROM it does UART with a virtual COM port.
Me: So how can this be changed?
FTDI: Here are many pages of documents that really don't answer the question succinctly.
Me: ... Pain rising ...

every time i need to do something with my 3d printer's software stack i lose my goddamn mind.

why is your only officially support platform a literal raspberry pi? why the fuck are you still using jinja of all things? why do i need an npm package with fifty billion dependencies to talk to a microcontroller???

martin_piper,
@martin_piper@mastodon.social avatar

@jacqueline or an "installation" that includes ten billion node.js dependencies.

i think my newest hot take is that libraries written for c++ consumption should still be written in c. library authors cannot be trusted with language features they will use too many and cause a big mess

martin_piper,
@martin_piper@mastodon.social avatar

@jacqueline templates?

martin_piper,
@martin_piper@mastodon.social avatar

@jacqueline back in the old days, template support was patchy and incomplete across many of the compilers often used for C++ projects. So we didn't use them. It was only later when compilers properly supported them that we chose to use them after long hard thinking. :)

martin_piper,
@martin_piper@mastodon.social avatar

@jacqueline I love templates too. But for ages they were considered to be a maintenance risk because they weren't well understood and very badly supported in compilers. Time helps change and improve perceptions about language features.

martin_piper,
@martin_piper@mastodon.social avatar

@jacqueline do you know fellow geeky friend Matt Godbolt? He's really into C++ language features.

My favorite thing about SBCs is how they love to have ridiculous power requirements.
Like, more than once I've gotten one and it's like "to power it on, just supply this barrel jack with 5v! And 7 amps!"

WHO HAS A 5V 7AMP POWER SUPPLY ON HAND, SERIOUSLY?

As promised, I'm going to do a thread on the aviation tape recorder today and see if it works.

I'll try to add hashtag, so feel free to mute it if this isn't your bag.

Note that I know nothing about aviation equipment, or even anything much about analog tape stuff, so please correct me if I get things wrong. I'd particularly like to hear if you are a .

I really should do another B-Grade PCB listing soon for these boards which are either retired, failed prototypes or arrived scratched or damaged.

martin_piper,
@martin_piper@mastodon.social avatar

@rc2014 I once had a reject PCB that had been turned into a mouse mat.

martin_piper,
@martin_piper@mastodon.social avatar

@rc2014 funnily enough I was looking for my old chess set and stumbled upon the mouse mat. It's foam backed, cut to mouse mat size, and the holes are intact, there is no smooth surface.
This was OK with a ball mouse, but optical mice could not deal with the holes and reflective surface.

martin_piper,
@martin_piper@mastodon.social avatar

@rc2014 cool!
The TV is from at least 2004, saw some old forum posts talking about the same model number. It's likely this mouse mat predates my interest in building electronics.

friends. For a 5V TTL power-on reset low signal, would you use a cap+resistor or a dedicated IC like the ADM709LAR?
https://www.mouser.sg/ProductDetail/Analog-Devices/ADM709LARZ?qs=BpaRKvA4VqHy5OxrBQwb0w%3D%3D

martin_piper,
@martin_piper@mastodon.social avatar

@oz1lqo it's to avoid power-on logic contentions in other 5V TTL bus transceivers. Ideally I would really like it to be very reliable in a variety of operating conditions.
