For anyone wondering, there are a few ways to install Windows 11 without creating a Microsoft account.

Probably the simplest — and one that I tested when I needed to do that — was just to give an invalid e-mail address when "creating" that Microsoft account; "elon@test.example" works well, because "example." is a well-known TLD that will never work, so the e-mail is guaranteed to be invalid.

Of course then the problem is that you still end up with Windows 11.

@rysiek @selfisekai doesn't the Muskrat have a corporate Tesla MS account? He could use that if he didn't want to make a new one

I've been seeing discussions lately around the YouTube fascism algorithm [not directed at me] implying that if you get those suggestions it's because that's material you have sought out.
Not true.

It's been studied and repeatedly shown--like a vehicle w/poor alignment--suggestions will drift to the right pretty quickly.
To "never" get them, you must
a) be outside targeted demographics AND
b) not look at DIY, repair, survivalism, building, cooking, sewing, politics, animal husbandry, automotive

@toor @_L1vY_ I mean, one chap was spouting antisemitic shit on the PZK (our version of ARRL, basically) board meeting. It's not just MAGA, it's bigotry in general :<

When you notice something problematic on Fedi

DON’T: Try to assess the situation and make sure you’re seeing it correctly in case the other person isn’t aware of the greater context

DON’T: Discuss it calmly with the person concerned to make sure that everyone is on the same page

DO: Create a public spectacle about it that annoys everyone else who has to see you try to make it everyone else’s business

I’m sorry, but myself and most people on Fedi aren’t here because we want to be involved in some wild vague goose chase about who interacts with who, or who said what about who.

Surely this kind of stuff is better dealt with in private with the people affected, without needing to make it everyone’s problem.

This is so incessantly annoying to me.

I bet it's super annoying to be the pope. Like you're at brunch and casually tell your friend "you shouldn't have the benedict here" and then there's a long awkward pause before you feel forced to quietly add "not dogma, just my opinion"

I wonder exactly how much of the internet would evaporate instantly if you detonated a high-altitude nuclear weapon over the bay area?

I'm not saying it'd be a good idea to destroy silicon valley in a flash of nuclear fire, but just EMPing the area would take out a frightening amount of servers all at once.

So I've listened to @LateNightLinux Christmas special episode, where the hosts were asked "how to make the internet better?". I fully agree with the views presented there. Decentralization, federation, selfhosting are the ways to make the internet better, go back to the pre-capitalist times before monopolies. One thing that I feel was not mentioned is finding a way to tackle CGNAT and other obstacles in self hosting. 1/x

me,
@me@cysioland.pl avatar

@rail @stfn @LateNightLinux local ISP gives IPv4 for a monthly price but you are not allowed to forward port 80 because they can't figure out remote management of their devices

me,
@me@cysioland.pl avatar

@stfn @rail @LateNightLinux I solved the problem (not mine, somewhere else with that ISP) by using Cloudflare and going HTTPS-only on our side

me,

If you are ever called to jury service, always remember that in the UK the jury is entitled to bring in what's called a “perverse verdict”: accepting that the accused committed the crime, but finding them not guilty anyway.

The government hates juries knowing this.
