Are you a web developer? What do you wish you understood better? What's frustrating to get? What do you have to keep looking up over and over?

@kaiserkiwi @jensimmons You mean using container queries has weird effects on the container, or..?

@sovtechfund A small request, please use an international date format (DD/MM/YYYY) rather than the American one (MM/DD/YYYY) in your English blog :)

@nithssh @timClicks so today is 24-004-2024 ? 😅

🎉 RESOLVED: View Transitions level 2 to public working draft

Level 2 of this specification defines hows the View Transition API works with cross-document navigations.

Soon, you’ll no longer need to refactor your MPA to an SPA in order to use View Transitions!

mb21,
@mb21@hachyderm.io avatar

@bramus Super cool! Is there some intent to implement in Safari and Firefox?

starting to suspect react was an op by facebook to ruin the rest of the internet so people use fb more

mb21,
@mb21@hachyderm.io avatar

@whitequark @hailey React is nice to develop with, but not very performant and going with a SPA is often the wrong choice. See e.g. https://mb21.github.io/blog/2023/09/18/building-a-modern-website-ssg-vs-ssr-spa-vs-mpa-svelte-vs-solid.html

Would you like to discover some new dev & dev-adjacent blogs?

Do have a look: https://rs.sjoy.lol

I'm adding relevant blogs randomly as I come across them. I shuffle the order every few hours.

If I add so many blogs that the build time ratchets up too far for my liking, I may start the blog shuffle before the RSS fetching, and limit how many blogs are shown... I don't know.

I want it to be a discovery tool, not a "keep up with your RSS feeds" tool, that's what RSS readers are for :)

mb21,
@mb21@hachyderm.io avatar

@sarajw to cut down on build hours, you could always do the shuffling with JS on the client…

mb21,
@mb21@hachyderm.io avatar

@sarajw yeah, although if you make a plain js script and make it part of the html file it shouldn’t be much slower?

mb21,
@mb21@hachyderm.io avatar

@sarajw I was thinking: statically generate an array of blog posts and put them in the script tag, with some JS that randomly shuffles the array and then generates the DOM list. You’d still have to regenerate the site every day or so to fetch new posts, but at least not every hour. But perhaps I’m misunderstanding what you’re doing 😅

@darth nit-pick: the left is actually what retro games look like. the right should be labelled “what games actually used to look like”

today I'm thinking about the tradeoffs of using git rebase a bit. I think the goal of rebase is to have a nice linear commit history, which is something I like.

but what are the costs of using rebase? what problems has it caused for you in practice? I'm really only interested in specific bad experiences you've had here -- not opinions or general statements like “rewriting history is bad”

mb21,
@mb21@hachyderm.io avatar

@b0rk I’m a fan of rebasing to make a private branch’s commits look nice. But as a PR reviewer, it can be a pain that commits keep changing after you already looked at them. Thus I try to stop rebasing when review started (except rebasing from main).

How do you decide which web framework to use? Which indicators are important for you?

mb21,
@mb21@hachyderm.io avatar

@timClicks

  • SPA vs. MPA
  • SSG vs. SSR
  • team topology (dedicated team for backend with REST API.. if so, can it run on the Edge?)
  • docs, community, support…
