Currently marooned in Texas.

My current amusement is enteracting with sarcastic posts as if i don't understand them to be sarcastic. I also enjoy explaining bad jokes. (You see because the black box is what is recovered, so if the entire plane was...)

@loshmi @mloxton @abucci @luckytran I think that is a good point, but most of those issues could be addressed through better implementation instead of complete elimination of spread control measures.

Adapting to more outdoor interactions and increasing air filtration in more open spaces would allow for personal interactions, as well as smaller groups would most likely allow for less overwhelming stimulus for those with MH issues.

Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater so to speak.

@Radical_EgoCom Everything in real estate? The realtor for the seller has an interest in maximizing sale price, the realtor for the buyer has an interest in maximizing sale price, the bank that holds the loan has an interest in maximizing sale price, the local government has an interest in maximizing sale price, and that's just the purchase aspect. There is literally no one with the ability to, who is actually trying to make real estate affordable, but everyone wants you to think they're trying.

Moralizing Nostalgia Leads to Bad History – and Helps the Anti-Democratic Right

David Brooks’ “How America Got Mean” offers an ahistorical tale that obscures rather than illuminates – and provides fertile ground for a politics of reaction.

A thread, based on my new piece: https://thomaszimmer.substack.com/p/moralizing-nostalgia-leads-to-bad

mhanson101,
@mhanson101@union.place avatar

@Robert_R_Freitag_II @tzimmer_history this seems like a complete non-sequitur. Where was the part that said you had to be a leftist in order to accurately interpret history and not frame it in a moralistically reactionary fairy tale?

mhanson101,
@mhanson101@union.place avatar

@Robert_R_Freitag_II @tzimmer_history ok, but that's an opinion, that again, doesn't seem to apply to this thread. Seems like you're angry with leftists and are applying that disagreement to tangential targets because they've critiqued someone, whom i'm assuming, you're a fan of.

One can definitely critique a work without defining their own morality and which political beliefs spring forth from them. The critique can be accurate regardless of the critic's own outlook.

mhanson101,
@mhanson101@union.place avatar

@Robert_R_Freitag_II @GhostOnTheHalfShell @tzimmer_history you certainly know how to utilize misinformation tactics.

Try this. There are things that happened, and ignoring the full context of the events surrounding those things is the main critique of this piece. So whether or not the full extent of "reality" is explained, the fact that Brooks ignored key events in order to present a flawed, and ahistorical account, is a valid criticism.

mhanson101,
@mhanson101@union.place avatar

@Robert_R_Freitag_II @GhostOnTheHalfShell @tzimmer_history right, and if you ignore facts in order to get to a conclusion, that is a deceptive conclusion. One which, in this case, furthers a hostile political movement.

mhanson101,
@mhanson101@union.place avatar

@Robert_R_Freitag_II @GhostOnTheHalfShell @tzimmer_history you claimed that "leftists" were without a moral basis for their positions and that is an explanation of how that's not the case

mhanson101,
@mhanson101@union.place avatar

@Robert_R_Freitag_II @GhostOnTheHalfShell @tzimmer_history oh my goodness, the literal argument of this critique is that the full context of factual events were ignored in order to develop a spurious conclusion that is damaging to democracy

mhanson101,
@mhanson101@union.place avatar

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @Robert_R_Freitag_II @tzimmer_history this dude is never going to engage with what you're saying in good faith.

mhanson101,
@mhanson101@union.place avatar

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @Robert_R_Freitag_II @tzimmer_history exactly my point early on. He came into this looking for "the left" and threw his practiced criticisms out even when they didn't apply.

mhanson101,
@mhanson101@union.place avatar

@Robert_R_Freitag_II @GhostOnTheHalfShell @tzimmer_history You probably tell everyone you're a centrist, and the longer this goes on, the fash will become more and more apparent I suspect.

Many stories report fracking billionaire Wilks brothers gave $6.5 million to launch PragerU and the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation is a big donor

I found the Marcus Foundation (of Home Depot co-founder Bernard Marcus) gave $6.5 million since 2018

To be a predator of a social species such as ants or humans you must not raise alarm. A hoverfly, tricks ants into keeping their larvae. It grows to a monstrous size, discretely feeding on ant larvae. The ants are unable to see it as a threat. Larvae simply disappear.

With our excellent vision the deception is obvious. But, what is also obvious is that the creatures that take advantage of humans would be just as invisible.

Sometimes... people just go missing? Right?

@drewharwell @caseynewton this strategy needs to be addressed in some way or its going to be a shredding of individual rights.

As a non-legal mind I don't see how allowing any individual the right to curtail free speech through monetary intimidation is more constitutional than the government restricting it in similar ways. It's like being eaten alive by ants rather than a lion.
