Trump claims it's not such a big deal if he lied on financial statements because he paid all the loans back. The banks made their money. Everyone is happy.

Even to me, it seemed like a fair point.

But, on ABC expert witness McCarty, says this isn't true. The more risky a loan? The higher the interest rate. Trump scored very low rates pretending to be richer. The banks would have made $168 million more had he not lied.

We should all be so lucky to pay the interest rates of the rich, right?

mhanson101,
@mhanson101@union.place avatar

@futurebird anyone who says, "it's actually OK that i lied because things worked out", is 1. Hiding their actual motivation for lying and hoping you won't pursue that and will instead of focus on the completion of the thing that you no longer need to worry about and 2. Believes themselves to be beyond reproach from the moral and social obligations to which they will hold you accountable should it benefit them to do so

Asking questions is never inherently a bad thing. But, it becomes destructive when it's simply done for the sake of argument, rather than for searching for truth.

IE - we have more than enough devil’s advocates. Our quota is full.

    @StillIRise1963 my biggest gripe with history... I'd really like to know what actual people did and lived like, how they navigated life amongst a small group of sociopathic assholes setting up the foundations of the structures we have now, not how the sociopaths spent their stolen money.

    mhanson101,
    @mhanson101@union.place avatar

    @StillIRise1963 completely agree. The democratization of record keeping is a minor bright spot.

    The fetishization of wealth and the wealthy constantly colors the behaviors of us poors though, not to mention the whitewashing of cultures all around the world.

    @aolgrandpa @StillIRise1963 yeah, it's very upsetting since all the assholes of today become tomorrow's "historical figures". It really takes the blinders of on what kind of dick heads these people really were, and how much more easily they got away with horrible shit

    malwaretech, (edited ) to random

    I think this might actually be the first time in my life I've been more horrified by some of the left than the right. The Ukraine war came close-ish, with some factions of the left siding with Russia due to distrust of the US (which, fair enough), and then tankies apparently being confused as to whether Russia is still socialist or not. But all of that was balanced out by the right trying to undermine Ukraine funding in favor of the most stupid shit ever.

    But this week a lot of leftists who support Palestine somehow stumbled past the point and went straight for glorifying one of the most horrific massacres in recent history, openly supporting Hamas, and even straight up calling for the elimination of Israel. I always thought the right had a monopoly on overt racism and unjust violence, but apparently if you substitute in words like "decolonization" you can get some of the left to go full Nazi too.

    mhanson101,
    @mhanson101@union.place avatar

    @malwaretech I think it really reflects how incompletely we distinguish between political groups. Left/ right is insufficient but anything more than a binary spectrum and it becomes difficult to quickly "us vs them"

    After spreading “white genocide” myths and demonizing migrants, there’s no denying it: Elon Musk is a racist.

    But he’s been pushing racist ideas in a less overt way for years. He dismissed racist abuse in his factories or pushed eugenic ideas about population levels. We need to reckon with why so may were unwilling to call it out sooner.
