The year is 1989.

We are making a mix tape.

Everyone gets to add one song.

Which song are you adding?

I'll start. Don't Stop Me Now by Queen.

UPDATE:

1989 is here.

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2V1prlH4EKwYsVRRrDDPq1?si=ej9lXVCWRFmoBYNSso7YTA&pi=e-diNDzH86Tayo

A playlist created in collaboration with friends on Mastodon. ❤️

EDIT:

Ok I added a bunch more. There is almost 12 hours of music on the list! That's 16 x 45 minute mix tapes!! Thanks everyone.

Let's talk philosophical game dev nonsense!

Imagine three chests, a "bad, good and best" item. You don't know which is which, just pick one.

Okay, now take Mario Bros 3. It has this scenario, but through emulator you can find out, the item you get is (timer based) RNG. Which chest you chose is not the deciding factor.

Does it matter that the presentation doesn't match reality? That you couldn't have picked a better chest? Even though you had no basis for an informed decision either way?

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@Nifflas Irrelevant, with the one clarification (not enough to say "It's complicated") that the three chests are always understood to come as a set and, as the player opens one, the other unopened chests can no longer be that chest.

I mean, if you say it matters that the presentation doesn't match reality, then aren't you saying that the chests shouldn't be RNG at all? So the item you get couldn't be randomly determined by which chest you pick, or when you pick a chest?

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@Nifflas Aaah yeah, I see. So in the "presentation matches reality" scenario, the RNG roll just happened a bit earlier.

Yeah, I just still think I'm at peace with the idea that this is irrelevant. Accepting that it's RNG at all, it doesn't matter how, what, when, who, why it's done…

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@Nifflas Yeah, yeah, it's an interesting question.

Reckon I'd like to sleep on it, and actually play the game knowing this info!

i really don't understand people who have beef with the word "orthogonal" in a technical context

there's nothing obscure about it, it's a word that every american with a high school education has encountered before, and its meaning in a technical context isn't difficult to comprehend either

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@whitequark they just can't help themselves going against the grain, and refuse to admit it

Latest bake: Piri Piri Almond Flapjacks.

Yeah, that's Piri Piri as in the spicy seasoning. My first time trying spiciness in flapjacks, suggested by a great friend. Reader, it totally works!

Photo: Freshly baked Piri Piri Almond Flapjacks, sitting in their clear plastic container, twelve of them in three layers of four, with a piece of baking parchment between each layer. The container's lid is off and sat beneath it.

https://www.formac.ca/starrspoint/2024/02/10/flaws-become-clearer-but-latest-effort-to-reform-electoral-system-fails/ - great look at the recent history of electoral reform. It’s ironic that even though PR would benefit the Liberals, their leadership seems to be stuck on ranked choice - which would benefit them more, but only them. So instead they’re stuck with FPTP, which hurts them.

I suspect electoral reform is a bit like urban densification - everyone rejects the idea of it, but once it happens, it becomes positively viewed.

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@npilon Eerily familiar story to us here in FPTP-burdened UK.

It does always make my heart sink a bit, though, when the (dis)advantage of PR to parties is brought into it. As I see it, PR is for the voters, with the parties having the humility to help us voters get the representation we vote for.

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@npilon Yeah, fair. I suppose I try to prioritise how fairly the system can represent the input (votes), rather than how it colours the output (seats), you know?

Also in my mind is this weird thing I once realised. Probably the closest we voters could get to making FPTP work for us is by coordinating to move house and populate each constituency with voters for one party. Sounds insane and fraught with all sorts of pitfalls, right?

PR may represent us this way, and save us the hassle of moving.

Yesterday's bake: Nigella & Oregano Bloomer

Always glad to get 21 slices out of a bloomer, so length-wise we're good, but it grew rather squatter than the height I'd like. And happily there was no huge air bubble lurking within, so all the slices are well intact.

I wish numpad minus would insert an actual minus instead of a hyphen

see you think this is fine
a+b-3x*c
but when you see
a+b-3x·c
you're like oh yeah that's what math is supposed to look like

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@acegikmo Aye, all those missed opportunities of the numpad. Could save people like me from typing stuff like:

AltGr+- for −
AltGr+Shift+, for ×
AltGr+Shift+. for ÷

There are few greater joys than remembering you left some home-delivered pizza in the fridge for morning.

However, I can’t work out if it is mature to delay gratification so as to leave some pizza for the morning, or immature to have pizza for breakfast.

@davidallengreen You go by the cheese, whether that is mature or not.

Today in we have the release Wood Jubilee of one of our recent times' most dearly cherished albums to celebrate:

[5: Wood] Rustin Man's "Drift Code": https://www.dominomusic.com/releases/rustin-man/drift-code/standard-lp

If I could boil Drift Code down to one thing, I'd say: closeness. It's an album of loved ones, quiet times alone, memories.

"Our days are all that we have"

Happy Anniversary, Paul!

Thinking about all the beautiful art that could have been made if only the church hadn’t been so dominant for English morality in the Middle Ages.

Imagine; all the teenage girls making tapestries of Robin Hood kissing the Sheriff of Nottingham

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@Sophie Roughly this kind of thing was floating through my own mind the other day: How religion seeks to beautify the world through art is something it has going both for and against it. On the one hand makes it appear to be something its followers are inspired to keep living in. But on the other, does the opposite for the people it is too blinkered to see the beauty in.

I'm really dreading the point, and it seems like it's coming down the pipe what with all the recent attacks on search results quality, at which reverse image search becomes useless. "Image posted with no source or attribution or description" is getting worse and most platforms actively don't care about fixing it, and there are entire categories of post that exist because people don't know where something came from, because some asshole deliberately removed information and made that hard to find.

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@jplebreton It's nice to hear someone else (with a bigger following than me) is bothered about this.

I guess originally seeing people posting screenshots of bits of documents is what did it for me. But personally, I don't really have a downer on the people themselves, because they're just as stuck as the rest of us with systems that don't give us better ways to reference things.

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@jplebreton Yes, definitely! This world you describe – in my eyes one where we all see any kind of decontextualisation as a massive faux pas – is exactly what I want.

And great call on alt text! Kinda seems like we're partway there to us seeing that it's shitty to not apply it.

[28] Tortoise's "Millions Now Living Will Never Die": https://thrilljockey.com/products/millions-now-living-will-never-die

If Leftism is the music of a future beach-dwelling tribe dancing the night away, Millions Now Living Will Never Die scores the travels and landscapes and clarity of their children rebuilding the world.

Happy Anniversary, Neil & Paul; Dave, Dan, Doug, John & John!

Could do with a new external hard drive. I’m thinking 4TB seems the value sweet spot right now.

Anything actually exciting in that space right now or do I just grab a Seagate / Wester Digital?

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@wiredfire Ah yeah, totally understandable! I could actually do with some more storage, myself, and have wondered about taking the plunge on a NAS system, expandable as it fills. That'd probably best contain HDDs, I guess?

Until my own budget allows, though, I'm just gonna have to keep shuffling stuff around the storage space I've got!
