Newly updated discography page at rivulets.net, where you can sort by album, EP, single, etc. with full details on every release: https://www.rivulets.net/discography

@rivulets Niiice! Really lovely discography.

Just in case you haven't spotted this: If we sort by, say "Date - Ascending", navigate to a release's page and then go back, the sort picker gets the "Date - Ascending" option back, but the releases themselves don't get sorted by that option.

@rivulets Sweet! You're welcome.

Somehow, I have unintentionally become someone who now pays detailed attention to when I use a hyphen, minus sign, en dash, or em dash.

I mean, it's not exactly out of character. But of all the things to burn mental CPU cycles on, it doesn't seem like the highest priority, and yet here I am.

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@munificent Same here and, bear with me on this, for me I kind of wonder if it has anything to do with both playing the guitar and being pretty keen on writing.

On the guitar, we can play the same note in different places on the fretboard. And in writing, these dashes and things, all boiling down to being a "horizontal line", differ in similar-ish ways – how they look and what they mean – to that note with its different timbres and uses.

You know how we can tag people cross-instance here with our @person syntax? What if, when linking to profiles at whatever site we fancy – e.g. https://listenbrainz.org/user/M.%20del%20Carpio/ – we used that syntax to fake-up tags to them? So I'd maybe fake that one up as: @m%2E%20del%20Carpio@listenbrainz.org

We know it won't resolve to anything today, but may this kind of thing encourage sites to federate, and even let it resolve in the future?

P.S. Bearing in mind we may need to encode some characters.

OK, people who prefer keyboard driven interfaces... I can use my 'j' and 'k' keys to browse my timeline (awesome!), but I always need to click a toot first to focus it.

I have been unable to find a shortcut that focuses my timeline. What am I missing?

Talking about the default web interface.

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@ashtardeza For me, 1, 2 and 3 focus the "Home", "Notifications" and "Live feeds" tabs respectively.

Glad to discover the Shirley last night, starring Lance Reddick. It's on the to-watch list for a future film night, and it just wouldn't do him justice if his last ever work I saw was that disappointing Resident Evil series from a couple of years ago.

If I could write Linux programs, I would make:

  • A YouTube Music client
  • An email client
  • A Google Tasks desktop app
  • A calendar app

I haven't found satisfactory solutions for any of these yet, but hope springs eternal

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@gabrieldj Have you come across the calendar program Remind? https://dianne.skoll.ca/projects/remind/

I only recently discovered it, and haven't yet given it a good go, but it seems pretty fascinating to me.

TFW you restart your browser and it fails to restore your previous session, and the thought of reconstructing the dozens of tabs you had open in order to do your fucking job is so overwhelming you just want to go back to bed.

When indicating on a website that you can follow via ActivityPub/the Fediverse, I think we should converge on a common icon.

Problem: Until the software evolves, people might use multiple fediverse platforms at the same time to cover all their needs, e.g. PeerTube and Mastodon.

Fediverse icon: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Fediverse_logo_proposal.svg

ActivityPub icon: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ActivityPub-logo-symbol.svg

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@miklo @linos Yeah, this is probably the option I'd've picked. It'd give us a path to dropping the smaller icon if / when the software has evolved and, who knows, maybe even spur that evolution along.

I think I've over engineered my rpg engine. There are 5 ways to start a quest dialog with an npc when there really needs to be 2. Over time I've realized I only need 2, but 3 others remain for historical reasons. I've failed to follow the advice of when your prototype is done, start over with a clean codebase.

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@grumpygamer Five ways?

  1. Face-to-face "hello"
  2. High five
  3. Throw them a ball from nearby "here, catch!"
  4. Wave and shout from a distance
  5. Phone them

@thephd Kinda surprising to me that one side of this clash is a not-prefixed enum member. I mean, even if this was a standalone program not written to be included as a library, would they really never have come across the need to distinguish between different enums?

Every time someone says "during the pandemic" to describe the past, as if the pandemic is not going on, I die a little inside.

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@kendraserra Aww, yeah. My trick for "before the pandemic" is to simply (internally) add "began".

For this "during the pandemic" I guess "'s earlier days" could work?

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@wollman @kendraserra Oh yeah, cool. I honestly don't know if I even have particular ways of talking about the various phases of the pandemic, myself. (Same deal with other ongoing things like, I dunno, 2024.)

But in terms of how other people talk about it, I've just found it handy to come up with some deliberate way of dealing with that.

Today in we have the anniversaries of a varied trio of releases to celebrate:

[30: Pearl] Maurice Ravel's "Piano Works" played by Pascal Rogé: https://www.deccaclassics.com/en/catalogue/products/ravel-piano-works-roge-7439
[25: Silver] 植松伸夫 (Nobuo Uematsu's) "Final Fantasy VIII" OST: https://vgmdb.net/album/6
[9] Sleaford Mods' "Austerity Dogs": https://cargorecordsdirect.co.uk/collections/harbinger-sound/products/sleaford-mods-austerity-dogs

It's all about the Piano Works. Ravel, my favourite composer for piano, this the pick of recordings.

Happy Anniversary, Maurice (RIP) & Pascal; Uematsu-san; and Jason & Andrew!

Today in we maaay have the release anniversary of a fluidly Finnish album to celebrate:

[21] Värttinä's "iki": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iki_(album)

This one abounds with rhythms running their own course, melodies and harmonies flowing as streams, and those beautiful voices each a clear, cold glass of water.

If only it had a homepage. There once was https://web.archive.org/web/20041204134017/http://www.varttina.com/recordings/iki/ on Värttinä's site way back in 2004.

Happy Anniversary, Mari, Susan, Johanna, Antto, Janne, Lassi, Markku, Hannu & Jaska!

Latest bake: Nigella & Oregano Bloomer

On cold days, I like to warm the water to help the dough rise quicker than otherwise. About five hours for this one. And all the slices turned out nicely, with no gaping air bubble running through, so I must've got the "knocking back and shaping" stage right this time.

Photo: Freshly baked Nigella & Oregano Bloomer, cut into 20 slices (two more were already in the toaster) and sitting in its bag ready for the freezer

It's Friday night, no school tomorrow so your parents don't care what time you sleep. They are not home and Pizza delivery just arrived. You filled your fridge with Dr Pepper, have Ghostbusters on VHS, and Earthbound on SNES.

It doesn't matter that you are 46 years old and it's 2024, what is stopping you living this feeling...

miblo,
@miblo@mas.to avatar

@selzero Yo Deniz, just wanted to check back in after having completed EarthBound last night and thank you so much for mentioning it back then.

What a game! Aesthetically pretty uncomfortable, I reckon, with those sparse graphics (opposite from, say, Donkey Kong Country's lushness) and super twisted but oh-so-perfect soundtrack, offset by the friendly "we're all pulling together" and irreverent story.

Doubt I could pull off this one on guitar, but it may be my pick: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0T48JlQilTM

Calling all fans! 📢 (Un)inspired by the non-comprehensiveness of the You Must Hear Before You Die list, we're making a Mastodonian 1001 Albums list! 📝

Tell me THE album(s) you think everyone should hear, any genre/language/year, and I'll add to the list (reply here or DM; let me know if you want the submission to be anonymous). And even if you don't add an album, check out the list - maybe you'll find your next fave. :ablobjam:

@buffyleigh Had to vote for Add because I have a link to share: http://gaffa.org/dreaming/td_top.html

This one's for Kate Bush's album The Dreaming. The whole site is an amazing treasure trove of love for Kate written to a mailing list and newsgroup called Love-Hounds. Personally it just fascinates me to read how these fans wrote to each other over the internet back in 1986.
