how you know your brand is in serious trouble: a single friend of mine told a potential date he drove a Tesla and she said "ew"

@codinghorror Psst ... People have been having that reaction for years. (and not because of the CEO)

Was just asked by a friend if I wanted a #BlueSky invite.

My reply?

“Thanks but no thanks.”

Why?

Because I don’t need to see the app. I know the people behind it and what they stand for. The app can only ever be a manifestation of (or an initial misdirection from) that.

Expecting the wolf that took a bite out of you last time to this time act in your interests is how you end up as its dinner.

@exchgr @aral Somehow it feels wrong, how pleased I am to hear this.

One of the lesser known, but highly symbolic and ceremonial aspects of the British coronation is the century's old tradition that every US TV News Network brutally axes the career of their main TV anchor as tribute to the new monarch

@Pwnallthethings I mean, I'd forgotten until just now, so that's on you.

Been playing around with Bluesky a bit & it’s pretty interesting. They have an easier consumer experience (signup/discovery/UI works like Twitter) and it all feels very snappy. I like how they use domain names (or subdomains) instead of what look like funky email addresses. By far the biggest problem Jay & co face is that Jack Dorsey has effectively poisoned the well on everything from people assuming it’s a crypto platform (it’s not) to assuming (understandably) that be bad at trust & safety.

@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@anildash Would it be possible to make something that is compatible with both protocols, as they currently exist?

    The one thing I do think the AT Protocol is better at than is data portability. Being built-in at the protocol layer so that you don’t have to do the migration shit (which doesn’t bring your posts) is better. It just is. I think ActivityPub has more potential overall for the social web beyond just Twitter clones, but that part of is better.

    I just gave a virtual talk and this student got up to ask the first question, said he's the president of the effective altruism org. in the university, started doing a plug for it and I said that I was invited to do this talk at this university, and I'm not going to give you the stage to do advertise for EA. You can do that in your own time. Then he was like can I ask a question about healthcare? "I was going to ask a question before I got cutoff." Do you consider vaccines eugenics?

    To be more precise, I didn't actually think this. What I did think was that there was no way Tucker could fill his shoes. But what do you know, Fox put up the most preposterous populist imaginable, bow tie boy himself, and viewers gobbled it up like so many Swanson TV dinners. So, I've given up on predictions!

    misc,
    @misc@mastodon.social avatar

    Personally, the thing I resent Tucker Carlson for the most is the evolution of Chris Hayes's delivery style to sound more like him. (I'm so sorry, everyone, I could no longer suffer alone in this observation.)

    CalcKey has a lot going for it. Really pretty UI and great customization options. CalcKey and Akkoma are doing something very different from Mastodon. Mastodon still has better controls around what you see and what you don't see. Which one is right for you? Only you can decide. Make an account and try it out for a few days. The fediverse has something for everyone.

    misc,
    @misc@mastodon.social avatar

    @jcrabapple I maintain that CalcKey needs a better name.

    What are your top “I hear they’re working on it but I’ll believe it when I see it” albums? For me off the top of my head: Electrelane, Charles Bissell from the Wrens, My Bloody Valentine. I thought I remembered hearing something about Portishead, but searching just now came up dry for any confirmation more recent than like 12 years ago… :(

    God help me, I’m seeing some utility in AI image generators to brainstorm / try out wedding clothes. No way I’m giving any of them my face though. I’d have to do a local Stable Diffusion thing and I’m not sure it’s worth it.

    The idea that users want more “AI” in their existing software is an entirely unproven assertion. https://techcrunch.com/2023/04/24/snapchat-sees-spike-in-1-star-reviews-as-users-pan-the-my-ai-feature-calling-for-its-removal/

    Still wish there was an interface for read-it-later apps that presented saved articles like printed documents scattered across an infinite floor, which you could sort into piles to categorize. I don't even know for sure that it would work as well for my brain as it feels like it would, but I'd like to try it.

    misc,
    @misc@mastodon.social avatar

    Wondering if this could be an application for LLMs, or at least some of the ideas behind them. Just the idea of assigning coordinates to articles in an n-dimensional space, and using that to visually sort them into clusters. Probably overkill but seems like a fun thing to play with.

    Need new smoke alarms. Wirecutter is making its case for this "smart" system from Google. I know I'll get a good counter case here. What say you, Mastodon? https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-smart-smoke-alarm/amp/
