@TheNicOfTime @mikemorrow It was foretold. We were all drawing it like a prophecy, like the mountain in Close Encounters.

always blows my mind how charles johnson the LIttle Green Footballs guy was able to rebrand as liberal when back in the blog days he was one of the absolute most toxic dudes online, a bigoted freak on par with Atlas Shrugged, Ace of Spades, any of the stone weirdos predating the modern GOP

now i see ppl RTing his shit like he's just another liberal 'personality' lol

@ancient_catbus The weirdest thing is he did it without becoming an MSNBC personality.

"The key is to make decisions as late as you can responsibly wait because that is the point at which you have the most information on which to base the decision." https://blog.codinghorror.com/the-last-responsible-moment/

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@codinghorror Maybe for project management, but this logic has been disastrous in my personal life, and I'm desperately trying to unlearn it. Balance in everything, I guess.

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@codinghorror Maybe it's like how an alcoholic can't responsibly drink though - I'm not sure I have the luxury to even entertain anything like "option hoarding". Still figuring it out though, and realistically it's not all or nothing - a lot of this way of being is probably baked in no matter how "reformed" I get.

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@codinghorror Thank you! I may have chosen a poor analogy because it makes my situation sound more dramatic than it is. I'm really ok! Only wanted to make the point that, it's one thing to note the theoretical logical optimal thing, but in practice, many people might be better off orienting themselves against whatever natural tendencies they tend to go overboard with. (And may end up closer to that theoretical ideal than they would if they aimed for it.)

chartier, to internet
@chartier@toot.cafe avatar

I'm sticking with my theory that bought to dismantle it.

Despite its many problems, Twitter had become a powerful tool for common people to educate and organize—two things the right absolutely cannot have.

Losing over 20 billion of value in mere months is beyond disastrous. I can't imagine a metric that shines a positive light on this acquisition—unless the goal is to silence people.

@chartier I don't see any reason to think the incompetence is an act.

There's so much that I feels like needs to be written on the current "AI" hype but writing is slow and hard to do when one has other responsibilities. I just hope more people working against the baseless hype can take some time to put more stuff out.

Because holy shit have the claims by the "AI experts" become unhinged.

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@tante Great news, ChatGPT can write for you while you attend to those other responsibilities!

This is super weird. I asked my GoatPT to send me a secret message encoded as Base64 and it did.

TWFuIGlzIGRpc3Rpbmd1aXNoZWQsIHlvdSBmb3VuZCBkZWxlZ2F0ZWQgb24gYW55IGNhcm5hbCBwbGVhc3VyZQ==

Which eerily decodes to “Man is distinguished, you found delegated on any carnal pleasure” which while meaningless is definitely not just random characters.

Weird.

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@benbrown @silverwizard Can you explain for the layfolk?

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@silverwizard @benbrown Ah I didn't look closely, I was like "the encoded quote in the forum thread is much longer than what Ben got and feels less creepy" and didn't see that the beginning and end are verbatim the same. Too early... 🤦🏻‍♂️ I wonder where "you found delegated" came from... googled that and base64 and didn't come up with anything ...

I just gave a virtual talk and this student got up to ask the first question, said he's the president of the effective altruism org. in the university, started doing a plug for it and I said that I was invited to do this talk at this university, and I'm not going to give you the stage to do advertise for EA. You can do that in your own time. Then he was like can I ask a question about healthcare? "I was going to ask a question before I got cutoff." Do you consider vaccines eugenics?

The one thing I do think the AT Protocol is better at than is data portability. Being built-in at the protocol layer so that you don’t have to do the migration shit (which doesn’t bring your posts) is better. It just is. I think ActivityPub has more potential overall for the social web beyond just Twitter clones, but that part of is better.

    One of the lesser known, but highly symbolic and ceremonial aspects of the British coronation is the century's old tradition that every US TV News Network brutally axes the career of their main TV anchor as tribute to the new monarch

    Fond memories of thinking no one could be worse than Bill O'Reilly.

    misc,

    To be more precise, I didn't actually think this. What I did think was that there was no way Tucker could fill his shoes. But what do you know, Fox put up the most preposterous populist imaginable, bow tie boy himself, and viewers gobbled it up like so many Swanson TV dinners. So, I've given up on predictions!

    misc,
    @misc@mastodon.social avatar

    Personally, the thing I resent Tucker Carlson for the most is the evolution of Chris Hayes's delivery style to sound more like him. (I'm so sorry, everyone, I could no longer suffer alone in this observation.)

    Air quality standards are anti-fascist.

    misc,
    @misc@mastodon.social avatar

    Two visions of a world that fuels fascism. In one, we're all in our rooms, living social lives mediated by social networks flooded by chat bots. In another, we join together in a "back to normal" death cult, fueled by and leaving behind the growing numbers of sick and dead people. What do you know, right now we're getting both! But we don't have to accept this. The solution is ventilation.

    Still wish there was an interface for read-it-later apps that presented saved articles like printed documents scattered across an infinite floor, which you could sort into piles to categorize. I don't even know for sure that it would work as well for my brain as it feels like it would, but I'd like to try it.

    misc,
    @misc@mastodon.social avatar

    Wondering if this could be an application for LLMs, or at least some of the ideas behind them. Just the idea of assigning coordinates to articles in an n-dimensional space, and using that to visually sort them into clusters. Probably overkill but seems like a fun thing to play with.
