I was born a nerd and fully own my geriatric millennialhood. I love dad jokes, and I embrace cringe. You are my people. Having said all that, I feel like people here are blissfully unaware of coolness as a concept. If we want more groups of people to come here, I think that's worth discussing. Along with other "soft" things like culture, aesthetics, tone.

I've seen two well-responded-to age polls here, and it's really striking how old we are! Nothing against old people, I'm rapidly becoming one myself, but I think it would be great for this site's cultural health and for the future in general if we could bring more young people over to non-commercial social networking.

I’ve read some things that convince me the Internet Archive aren’t immune to Silicon Valley douchebaggery, and in the Open Library case they’ve engaged in sketchy behavior that’s likely weakened their case. I still hope they win, because they seem to represent the only major challenge to a publisher controlled model for how to adapt library lending into e-books - and that model is quite frankly a huge threat to libraries as we know and love them.

Yes, the publishers would very much like to reduce libraries to tax funded franchises of Amazon and Scribd, which is basically what Overdrive is. So yes, whatever you think of IA, this is a mortal threat to public libraries, along with the fascists.

    Desperate need for some kind of linktree/ feedburner type service to be a browser-friendly* podcatcher-neutral** way to link to podcasts - i.e. not *a straight up RSS feed, or **Spotify, etc. Used to be we could use Twitter accounts for that, but, welp.

    Still wishing for this. It's a little thing that could make such a big difference. We don't have to wait for everyone on Twitter to come here, to displace it as a default front door for everything on the internet.

    Hey, in the early days of Twitter we had "tweetups" where enthusiasts with nothing else in common but their geography would just ... meet up somewhere. (I actually have been reunited here with several old friends I met in those days)

    Covid complicates it somewhat but I think it might be just about time to try something like that for Mastodon. We have enough people - but not quite too many - for it to make sense. I'd be down to try!
