New to Mastodon. Thought id give an !

My name is Dillon. I am a biologist and Science communicator mainly active on the instagram. If im not hyperfixating on my R code, I am creating online courses and educational material, being opinionated about conservation, or out looking for frogs!

Anyone mind giving me a primer for how Mastodon works? Im still very new to it all

Picture is of my favorite salamander! (Bolitoglossa mexicana)

@dillonthebiologist welcome. I’ve been here long enough now that I forget how I started. Sorry I can’t help.

    Question: has MacOS spelling correction gotten quite a bit worse over the past couple of years? Just now it told me “unpolitic” is not a word. It is so.

    More annoying is that it frequently offers no suggestions for fairly minor misspellings of not-uncommon words.

    Is it saying, as Dawn did not long after we met, that “you talk flowery”.

    mlevison,
    @mlevison@agilealliance.social avatar

    @marick amen MacOS spelling correction is awful. Maybe the ATP crowd can bang the drum loud enough for Apple to listen

    Some day I hope to write a book called "Useful Design Patterns that aren't from the Gang of Four".

    So tired of retreads over the same ground (and, TBH, often not very good ones).

    Google has just updated its 2FA Authenticator app and added a much-needed feature: the ability to sync secrets across devices.

    TL;DR: Don't turn it on.

    The new update allows users to sign in with their Google Account and sync 2FA secrets across their iOS and Android devices.

    We analyzed the network traffic when the app syncs the secrets, and it turns out the traffic is not end-to-end encrypted. As shown in the screenshots, this means that Google can see the secrets, likely even while they’re stored on their servers. There is no option to add a passphrase to protect the secrets, to make them accessible only by the user.

    Why is this bad?

    Every 2FA QR code contains a secret, or a seed, that’s used to generate the one-time codes. If someone else knows the secret, they can generate the same one-time codes and defeat 2FA protections. So, if there’s ever a data breach or if someone obtains access .... 🧵

    @YvesHanoulle @BetaCodex irony.

    I challenged his framing of a problem and I got blocked.

    Agile was born with the , of course.
    Soon afterwards, became . From then on, it only got worse. became a ‘training’ thing.
    But ‘agility’ (just as actual or ) is and must be a different theory about how to design and organize work and value creation. It requires re-thinking organization – and put thinking on the garbage heap of history.
    or or won’t help people rethink organizational theory.
    The movement avoided the theory problem. That’s why it has been so popular and also why it failed, utterly and completely.

    mlevison,
    @mlevison@agilealliance.social avatar

    @BetaCodex your history of is incorrect all the approaches predate the manifesto event.

    I still don't really know what mastodon is FOR but I'm working on an analysis about engineering managers and how they talk about advocating for their teams and I simply cannot wait to share it, I can't stop thinking about it, it's such fascinating stuff.

    Never has it annoyed me more that we're trying to reduce all the complex experience of running a functional and supportive software team to "tools" (aka "developer experience"--which is being completely co-opted by conversations about tooling)

    Given that. Should participate on behalf of our Authors and how should we pass that money on to authors? The per article price is not going to be very much money, say $0.10. But we could put the money into the author payment pool and pay out by Quality/Popularity.

    Forgive my bluntness, but I just do not understand who all these emails less than a week from RSA with, "want to meet the CEO of *insert ambiguous new cybersecurity startup??" appeal to. First of all, we've all been totally booked for months. Second of all, why would you want to go meet a random CEO unless you already had a business relationship? I get the party invites (though some are super late to the game this year) because that's a fun and somewhat appealing thing, but this one totally baffles me. I don't need to like go get their autograph like its Comic Con

    From time to time the hosts of some of my favourite podcasts mention Will Power/Ego Depletion, citing the work of Roy Baumeister. It may not be common knowledge but the original work fails replication. As I document in this note sharing the theory has negative consequences since people believe they have limited will power. I'm pasting my notes on the subject from my Obsidian vault. These are rough and ready, they've not even been polished by Grammarly.
