49% of Americans surveyed think that unemployment is at a 50-year high. (It’s actually just a smidge over a 50-year low.)

49% think the stock market is down for the year. (It’s up 12% [S&P 500 index].)

56% think the economy is in a recession. (It’s not.)

And long-termists want to infest the universe with (the descendants of) this species! What have they got against cold, lifeless matter?

An Obsidian user on Medium recently lost an entire vault to data corruption because of an encryption plugin.

I’m very sorry this happened to them, and that they didn’t have a backup.

Truly, if our notes in Obsidian can’t function without features that exist only in that app, we’ve shackled ourselves to the wall of a prison without a door.

Always have an exit plan! Always backup your work! And never lock all your data with a key you don’t own.

@kepano@mastodon.social avatar

@ellane Personally I think this is better handled at the OS level than at the app-level. Disk encryption has been available on major OSes for long time, macOS has FileVault and Windows has Bitlocker. And of course Obsidian Sync is end-to-end encrypted.

A streamer I like got her account hacked, so if anyone knows someone who works over at YouTube well enough to ask for a favor, send me a DM.

The hackers deleted a decade of videos and turned her channel into scam Tesla content (unsurprisingly).

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

Instead, I finally took the time to prepare something else: a comprehensive story about all the problems of iPadOS.

One of the best things about live coding (and doing it enough to have a few people in the "audience") is that it raises my level of awareness of what I'm doing by being asked questions:

"Why aren't you refactoring after getting to TDD-Green?" or "Why didn't you extract that string into a variable?" or "Do you use Test Data Builders?"

If I was trying to "get work done", these questions would be annoying¹, but instead (especially as a technical coach/educator) they are More Valuable than GOLD!

One of the hardest things to do as an "expert" who is also a coach is to take what has become automatic and turn it into steps that can be taught to a non-expert.

¹ of course if I wanted to just get work done, live coding is not the most efficient way to go (tho it works really well for me despite the welcome interruptions.)

Scoop: Solar storm is causing farmers' tractor GPS systems to go haywire. Many have shut down planting altogether during a critical period. A Deere dealer said accuracy is "extremely compromised"

@jasonkoebler Interesting to figure out who or what fucked up here. SBAS/WAAS provider? DGPS makers messing up ionospheric correction? Space weather parameters out of spec for the software running on the RTKs? All of the above?

nb: As much as I dislike Deere, this should be handled completely blameless, the way the FAA handles an investigation. So many lessons to learn here.

Something I tell my software students a lot when they’re looking for jobs is to remember that a shockingly large number of job descriptions are written by people in HR who have next to zero understanding of the industry, the specific team, or the business need.

All they’ve got to work with is fragments they’ve heard without comprehension, coming to them through a terrible game of corporate telephone.

inthehands,

What’s the moral of this story?

(1) The hiring process is mostly not about you. That sounds weird, but it’s true.

(2) As an applicant, your job is to jump through nonsensical hoops — or walk around them, if you can — until you can reach the point where you’re having a real conversation with somebody who’s actually involved with the position in question.

(2a) That often means straight-up ignoring clearly stated job requirements.
