I'm a storyteller in both my personal and my professional lives. Expect weird musings and cute cat pictures.

If you post about sensitive subjects (especially politics and sex) without a CW, I won’t follow or boost you. If you don’t, but you boost people who do, I may follow you but will hide your boosts. If you post images without descriptions, I won’t boost you.

This is fascinating. Also, people are really bad at security.

Trouble with a capital T, that rhymes with P, that stands for Pool? At this time of year? At this time of day? In this part of the country? Localized entirely right here in River City?

I'm trying to remember a kids' book I read ages ago. I think it had a fairy tale setting. A couple who couldn't have kids kidnapped a baby from another couple and spirited him away. The couple spent years and years trying to find them. Eventually they did, and said "we're your real parents, you can come home now". And the kid, who had only ever known the other couple as parents, was happy with them and didn't want to go back to his "real" parents.

Anyone know the book? Boosts welcome.

@ElleGray Installs differ by server as I understand it (not a Fediverse expert), but on social.tchncs.de, it would be “keyword1 keyword2 in:library”. The “in:library” part limits it to stuff you posted or liked or boosted.

The latest Broadway production of “Merrily We Roll Along” is as good as everyone says. The main trio are terrific together, which makes the part where they aren’t that much more painful. The “Not a Day Goes By” reprise (preprise?) remains one of the biggest gut punches in musical theater history.

Ten years ago I met my sweet little kitties for the first time. They were in a cage at a rescue event and they were scared. Now they’re total lap kitties and loudly demand the food.

Poll for the 40+ crowd who went to school in the USA:

Do you, like, actually remember middle-school basics (like "how to diagram a sentence" or algebraic formulas and whatnot)?

@RamenCatholic @ItsTheManOnTheMoon I remember negative b plus or minus the square root of b squared minus four a c, whole thing over two a, but I don’t have the faintest idea what it was for. Something to do with triangles maybe?

A new episode of “Creepshow” has a writer called “Stephen Bachman”, and wow, way to know your audience.

Why did nobody tell me that Creepshow on had a new season? It’s one of the best things they have and I’m thrilled. Halloween is a good time to get caught up.

@rm4 That was a great game. Unpopular opinion alert: I liked it better than #2. The heroes mechanic made a few people at a time feel super badass, but it made everyone else feel super weak.

Based on yesterday's boosts and faves, I'm apparently considered the Fediverse's expert on OTC cold medication, and screw it, I'm leaning into it. The following will be a thread about how to treat a cold using entirely off-patent (and therefore cheap) OTC medications. Tagging @GottaLaff since it was your post that inspired this.

⚠️ “ advisory panel declared an ingredient in widely used oral doesn’t work, setting the stage for dozens of products to be removed from U.S. store shelves.

At issue is phenylephrine, an almost-century-old ingredient in versions of Benadryl, Mucinex, Tylenol and other over-the-counter pills, syrups and liquids to clear up congested noses.”

morganth,
@morganth@social.tchncs.de avatar

@GottaLaff It's true. Without exposing my identity too much, I worked with a manufacturer of cold medicines a while ago, and they were willing to admit internally that phenylephrine doesn't work. They still sold products with it, though, because it was approved, and a lot of customers wouldn't go to the pharmacist for pseudoephedrine (which actually does work).

Going back to playing some older PSVR titles. Being last generation, you can get that VR setup for dirt cheap now and there are a bunch of gems definitely worth checking out.

Here are my personal favorites:

  • Astro Bot Rescue Mission
  • Wipeout Omega
  • Farpoint
  • Doom 3 VR
  • Resident Evil 7
  • Tetris Effect
  • Blood & Truth
  • Trover Saves the Universe
  • Hitman 3
  • Gran Turismo
  • Skyrim
  • Moss
  • Beat Saber
  • Superhot

@fribbledom Resident Evil 7 in VR is the most terrifying video game experience I have ever had, and I mean that as a sincere compliment.

As I understand it, ”Ahsoka” is a spinoff of a sequel to a spinoff of a prequel, and hasn’t this all gone a bit too far?

morganth,
@morganth@social.tchncs.de avatar

@rm4 That’s what I was referring to. The Clone Wars was the spinoff of the prequels, and Rebels was its sequel.

morganth,
@morganth@social.tchncs.de avatar

@rm4 In my defense I haven’t seen Clone Wars or Rebels. I know a lot of people do have an attachment to the character.

morganth,
@morganth@social.tchncs.de avatar

@rm4 I’d completely forgotten about Bad Batch. This stuff gets complicated, huh?

morganth,
@morganth@social.tchncs.de avatar

@rm4 @MmeLibertine Can't speak for MmeLibertine, but I'm tired too. I'm tired of "hey, you know that thing you already like? Here's more of it." I'd coasted on some of it for a while but I just can't anymore.

The breaking point for me was "Kenobi." It had everything you expect from Star Wars--space ships and alien planets and lightsaber battles--and not a single original idea.

morganth,
@morganth@social.tchncs.de avatar

@rm4 @MmeLibertine And despite that, I went to see Indiana Jones 5, and same thing. It wasn't bad, but it was just more of what I've already seen.

I'm tired of that. I want things that I don't know if I'll like them or not. Disney used to be capable of that (or at least Pixar was), but not anymore.

morganth,
@morganth@social.tchncs.de avatar

@rm4 @MmeLibertine Sorry I unloaded all of that on you this morning, RM4. You are clearly a Star Wars fan and didn’t deserve a big pile of my grumpiness about the franchise. I hope you enjoy “Ahsoka.”
