It's official, I've completed my talk for the University of Guelph's conference! This is a huge goal I've been pushing myself to do for the last year and- holy crap- I did it! Really looking forward to facilitating the discussion on how to improve technical excellence through more social understanding of disability!

Trans rights are human rights, and everyone deserves to live authentically 🏳️‍⚧️ You are seen, you are valued, and you are loved as you are. I reaffirm that my space is safe and welcoming to trans people. I will stand with you 🖤

Alternative text = inclusion. Describe images not only for screen readers but for sighted users who read the alt text they can access! meaningful can help to highlight the main focus of why you've posted an image especially on social media.

Screen readers, braille displays, and other assistive technologies empower millions with different disabilities. Visual, cognitive, motor and mobility, temporary or dynamic, and environmental are just a few of the different disability types that we need to consider when we offer things on the web.

It's not enough to write "picture of 3 people" in alternative text. Alt text needs to describe the image to people who rely on a screen reader that will read that description. "3 people sit at a restaurant table and laugh together." Easier to picture, than the first, right?

mothdust,
@mothdust@mstdn.social avatar

@ComicContext the point of alt text is to be as detailed while still being concise as possible. Some pages might need long descriptions! Those descriptions can go in a post instead of alt text. Some assistive tech (AT) can't navigate through alt text, which means you either listen or don't listen and that's it. But people relying on AT have the luxury of being able to interact with a full post in different ways! That might be a better option for those complex Magneto speeches 😏

An increase in seeing captions online is great, but I'd love to see more content creators look into captions from the lens of disabled consumers who rely on them. This one-word-at-a-time captioning style is really tiring.

If you're using hashtags with more than one word, use to make them more easily readable for people and assistive technologies. It could be the difference between and 😏

I promise I'm not trying to be rude when I start talking about my experience with a similar thing you bring up. It's a neurodivergent trait. We tend to share what we understand about the topic from our perspective as a way to further conversations. I know some people find this frustrating, just tell us! We don't realize this isn't comfortable for you as we do it.

Dear, too many people:
Please stop misusing the term "intrusive thoughts". Please understand that your "intrusive thought won" joke may not be received well by everyone.
Sincerely,
A sufferer of OCD with legitimate intrusive thoughts that are devastating to emotional health.

friends, looking for advice and I need perspectives. I teach the importance of including race in the standard default is so often assumed "white" that I stress the importance of representation in alt text but what do we do when we're not sure of the race we're describing? What if someone is white-passing? I don't want to exclude based on assumptions. How can we remain inclusive when facing some of these challenges when authoring alt text? Thoughts are hugely appreciated

mothdust,
@mothdust@mstdn.social avatar

@danirabbit it's incredibly important that authora take into consideration more neutral terms I think "light skinned" is not the same as white and I'm definitely sensitive to anyone who may be white-passing. Hugely underrepresented group as well! I'm sorry you struggle with this. I'll definitely be more mindful of my alt text in the future. I really appreciate your input 🙏

Hey friends, have any of you attended the conference? What was your experience? Is it worth the money and time/energy spent in travel and... just being in a big crowd for 2 days in general? Do you think the virtual options offer the same value?

Morning, friends. Wonder if you could help me: do you have any examples of websites that sport accessible contrast switching options (directly on the site)? I don't want overlays, I'm looking for a site specifically developed with contrast options. Drop your examples in a comment if one comes to mind!

mothdust,
@mothdust@mstdn.social avatar

@sarajw I'd love to check it out if you'll drop the link? Truly I'm just looking for some different ways to normalize contrast options on sites and I'm interested in how you're doing it!

To everyone using the hashtag: please take a bit of time to learn about digital accessibility and how to make your posts accessible to those of us belonging to disabled communities. If anyone needs help or has questions about digital content and accessibility (alt text, readability, navigation, etc.) I'm happy to help out!

Pride month ends, but the hatred LGBTQ2S+ communities face doesn't. Organizations will remove their rainbow logos and take down their flags but we don't only fight in June. We're always here. Queer or questioning people always have my support. 🌈

It's so interesting that the posts I report for harmful activity (and this isn't my opinion, these are legitimately concerning posts that call for violence on marginalized groups) all come back saying they "didn't break safety policies". If policies are so loose that posts calling for the death of people aren't breaking policies, we need to look more closely at the policies themselves and the platforms they exist on... damn. (Super glad I was introduced to Mastodon.)

Managers are rarely mocked in professional introductions. Many pros in ethical roles (accessibility, diversity, hr, etc.) are. Our jobs aren't jokes, and we aren't trying to be hardasses. We're trying to educate about the importance of our work, often to those uninterested.

@mothdust@mstdn.social avatar

Accessibility isn't a buzzword, a fad, or a marketing tool. is how those of us with disabilities access things with dignity and equity. We can tell when you can't be arsed... it's a bad look for you. Lots of people notice.

Friends in the digital field, is there a good solution for footnotes? I'm not finding much and I worry that anchor links will bloat the elements list nav with non-contextual numbers... thoughts? 🤔

mothdust,
@mothdust@mstdn.social avatar

@sarajw right but that's the issue: the footnote number (in the content) is what would be linked. Which would create just a long list of "1, 2, 3, 4," etc. Not super helpful. I thought about aria-describedby but this won't work if a client is building their own content (unfamiliar with the technical side)...

mothdust,
@mothdust@mstdn.social avatar

@sarajw I thought of this, but I'm not sure this would work for a client solution...I think something custom would have to be made to ensure all areas were covered. I wish there was a good semantic tag for a footnote!
