On Monday, President Biden is to deliver remarks to celebrate the Americans with Disabilities Act (#ADA), which he cosponsored as a senator, and to mark #DisabilityPrideMonth, according to the White House.
The #BBC Proms is underway and French horn player Felix Klieser will be making his debut on August 2 playing Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 4. The German virtuoso performer was born without arms, so he plays the instrument with his left foot. He spoke to the BBC's Access All podcast about his exceptional career.
UC Davis employees operating these carts frequently park them blocking the entrance and/or sidewalk in front of student housing. I guess UC Davis feels it won't admit many students with visual disabilities or who use mobility aids?
Kelly Dawson was born with cerebral palsy — and an insatiable need to go and see and do. She writes in Travel and Leisure about how she explores America’s national parks and experiences a freedom and satisfaction wherever she stands. https://flip.it/91MG2B #Disability#DisabilityPrideMonth#NationalParks#Travel
Anxiety disorders are actually really really debilitating. It's awful to spend months or years of your life in fear of things that no one else is afraid of. Or you entire life in my case. I've learned to try to have fear coexist with happiness or joy but it is really hard. If I didn't try I would never enjoy anything. The anxiety isn't going to stop, so what choice is there.
I get very frustrated when people claim that anxiety is not a disability or included in neurodivergence. My anxiety has only even meant I was pushed further out of society, never included. I feel just as excluded from society for being autistic as I do for having anxiety disorders. It's the same fight for me.
Dip hop is a style of rap that sprang from the Deaf community, using sign languages and informed by Deaf cultural experiences. In this @TheConversationUS article, musicologist Katelyn Best looks at the birth of the genre, its many forms, and how it is breaking into the mainstream.
"As we mark the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) this week in 1990 and the 10th anniversary of Human Rights Watch’s work on disability rights this year, I think about the trailblazer Judy Heumann, who influenced both milestones.
Judy, who passed away in March, was a pioneer in the disability rights movement. A member of Human Rights Watch’s Board of Directors, she reminded us that disability is the one family anyone can join at any time. There are more than one billion people with disabilities worldwide – one in seven people. They are our relatives, friends, neighbors, and colleagues living with physical, sensory, intellectual, and psychosocial disabilities, visible and invisible. Some we are born with, others we acquire at some point in our lives. Disability rights should matter to all of us."
July is Disability Pride Month. One in four American adults has some kind of disability. For Teen Vogue, Madison Lawson, who is a wheelchair user, wrote about disability representation in "Barbie," the history of the Becky doll, and what seeing Barbie in a wheelchair means to her.
“Getting now to work as an artist and a musician in hours that work for me, looking after my disabilities in a life that is queer and fulfilling is wonderful, and every single trans person should be afforded the same feeling of love and respect.” Emory.

Listening to this fabulous Radio Lab episode discussing why people with disabilities are uniquely qualified to be astronauts while auditing the (coming soon) @NASA website for accessibility. 🚀 ♿️ I couldn't ask for a better background.
Got myself an #ActuallyAutistic cake for #DisabilityPrideMonth from @dirklancer 's shop, Sugared and Spiced. I got officially diagnosed in May (self diagnosis is totally valid, to be clear). The best cakes come from back alleys.
“…It’s Disability Pride Month, time to celebrate the Americans with Disabilities Act getting signed into law on July 20, 1990. Let’s be clear that the ADA didn’t happen because nice abled people decided to help the handicapped. Disabled activists literally crawled up the steps of the US Capitol to show how fucked up the inaccessibility of the world is. They raised hell for years to get the ADA passed. But the ADA is a floor, not a ceiling. It’s meant to provide basic rights, not the liberation dreamed of.” #Disability#DisabilityPrideMonth
✔️A key aspect of Inclusivity is using precise and respectful language when discussing #Disability. (Perkins School for the Blind)
👉🏽Disability Pride Month began 32 years ago, when the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law on July 26, 1990. The first disability pride events were held in #Boston.
🎯Together we can help people with disabilities to overcome barriers of stigma, ableism, and inaccessibility.
