THANK YOU!! this is one of the two major traffic frustrations I have living in Massachusetts where everyone thinks they are being helpful and friendly but are actually slowing things down by trying to do this ALL. THE. TIME.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@LostReflector you'd hate portland driving so much

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@LostReflector yeah PDX area driving is 75% people who defer FAR too much and cause all kinds of trouble (obvious zipper merges wrecked by early mergers, this XKCD thing, etc) and 25% east coast and LA people enraged by the foolishness and driving twice as crazy to make up for it

One of the absolutely truest sketches in all of Portlandia, what I refer to now as a "Portland Standoff"

This continues to hold up well.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@kjhealy "there is no scientific consensus on what 'consciousness' is or if it really exists, so all of these positions are unproven beliefs posing as rationalism" isn't great meme fodder, it's true

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@Zamfr @kjhealy It isn't, though. The upper left is essentially atheism applied to consciousness ("X does not exist"). The summary I put forward is agnosticism in the same context ("we don't know enough about X to say, and it may not be provable either way with available means"). The situation is somewhat like those around theories of dark matter and energy. Their ontological status is simply unproven at this time. The upper left quadrant is just as belief-based as any. There's just no evidence.

The back half is smoldering with standout takes on High Time, the first-played Attics of My Life, and a very hot New Speedway Boogie with a blazing mid-song Nobody’s Fault jam. When the prosecution rests in the Manhattan case, I plan to read the transcripts so far looking for evidence that supports the elements of particular crimes.

This is my thing: Reading trial transcripts. My job was reading trial transcripts looking for appealable errors.

Shall I tell you my favorite moment in a transcript?

The defendant (yes, my client) walked in to court with baggy pants. The judge (a woman) was offended and angry. She thought the defendant was disrespecting her.

1/

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@guyjantic @Teri_Kanefield yep the culture wars over sagged pants go back a long way, and critiques of them (among many things) are often proxies for racism or at best cultural ignorance and associated bias. And the dress codes in court and other official settings are imo a type of discriminatory barrier and should be updated and loosened. "Professionalism" is far too often simply code for exclusion.

That said, you can't show your draws in court. Come on man! "when keeping it real goes wrong"

Until high school, Kate Feiffer believed that her mother Judy's novel, "A Hot Property," was about real estate. Then a boyfriend plucked the book from the shelves, started reading passages aloud, and revealed it was a piece of 1970s erotica. From then until just a few years ago, Kate considered "A Hot Property" to be her literary Waterloo — the book she'd hoped to conquer but never been able to. But after her mother's death, she picked up the novel and — between bouts of screaming and cringing — found something more thoughtful and reflective than she was expecting. Here's what she wrote for LitHub.

As a young fella just getting into in the late eighties my first impressions of David Sanborn were that he was corny and overly smooth, in an unhip bag I didn't dig with guys like Metheny and the Breckers. Then he blew my fucking mind with the Night Music show and I've respected him ever since. There was almost no really cool weird music on TV in 1988-90 except that show, and man, Night was legit!!! Nick Cave, Bongwater, Pere Ubu, Miles Davis...
