Today I think I'll post a series (not a thread, for better discoverability) on #UKjazz the #London and related #jazz and fusion/crossover #music scene. These are just my favo(u)rites and not intended to be definitive or anything like that. Right up front I need to shout out my friend @LostReflector who has been a big part of this journey with me.

Here's a "New Acoustic" classic album I haven't thought of in awhile, Todd Phillips' Released. New #acoustic was one name for the post DGQ wave of #music that combines #bluegrass instruments with #jazz repertoire and concepts and a very high level of virtuosity. This one features Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, Darol Anger and John Reischmann on material like Nardis and Miles' Mode - Tony listed the latter as one of the performances he was happiest with.

The Celtics and Tatum are the weirdest good team and star in a long time. They just can't decide if they're serious or not. If they lose the series to the Heat, which is absolutely possible, they should throw the whole ass TD Garden into the harbor and be done with it.

Meanwhile Butler and the Heat have more dog in em than Cruella De Vil's whole operation. Incredible overachievement relative to talent from coaching and effort.

They're like bizarro opposite teams.

The first large mandala piece is getting wrapped up for shipping today. Approx 22" across in acrylics and Culture Hustle metallics on jigsaw-cut half inch finish plywood. 16fold radial symmetry with 32 total radial points, 14 steps from center to edge not counting the metallic subdivisions.

Modern UK #jazz YT playlist by me

Featuring Shabaka Hutchings in many lineups, a bunch of Tom Skinner in various guises, Nubya Garcia, Chelsea Carmichael, Moses Boyd, Yazz Ahmed, some #hiphop crossover here and there, both Ill Considered and the IC/Skinner project Wildflower, etc. This leans fairly heavily towards more recent material but goes back to when the scene was first gaining international attention. It is NOT exhaustive, by all means suggest other artists!

Time to wrap up the dancing skeletons installation project. As posted previously, 3 of 5 pieces are complete, and the last two are in final stages. At this point the red and green skeletons are cut, sanded, primed (white on the front and sides, black on the back), outlined in sharpie and given 2 coats of color. The stands are assembled and primed. Here's one clamped to its stand. With the layout set I'll drill holes and mark the stand for glue

I wasn't entirely sold on Kidd as a coach as recently as the start of the playoffs but in addition to holding the respect of his players - including Kyrie - he's done a nice job. I don't have a single critique really. They play smart, they lean into advantages, they get the most out of their role players. Good job by him.

The new school #NBA has fully arrived with these playoffs, and it's awesome. The LeBron/Curry/Durant era is over, all love and respect to those guys, but the league has moved into the start of a new era. The two western conference series in particular feel super fresh, every team is unique in lineup and style. Love this moment we're in. And the Wemby Spurs aren't even good yet!

Things I'm looking for in this #nba game:

1. who guards the stars and can they be effective at all?

Haliburton is the best pick and roll guard in the league (yes really), and LeBron is a force of nature when he needs to be. You can't stop either one, but you can't let them take over.

2. does AD show up?

Time to let go of the idea that he's an every night offensive force. He's not that guy. But when he balls out on that end he's great and the Lakers are hard to beat. Pacers interior D is bad.

I finally caught up to Chivalry, the 2022 comic/graphic novel written by @neilhimself with art by Colleen Doran. It's delightful, unique, and quite short.

Seems this was written long ago & languished in rights heck for decades. The art is exquisite and fits the story perfectly. The tone is quintessentially Gaiman in his lighter mode: thoughtful, heartfelt, gently comic, understated, emotionally moving.

Highly recommended.

Before I boost this next thing, I would like to note how incredibly NSFW it is, in the sense of containing many highly explicit horny pictures. It's very funny, or was for a long time. So don't click if you're not interested in centaur-fucking jokes that depict actual fucking etc. Okay? Great.

But it's hilarious

EDIT: it has been brought to my attention that centaurs are one of the mythical beasts not yet fucked in Oglaf. Anyone disappointed by that oversight is entitled to a full refund.
