Today is my birthday!

If you'd like to do something for me for my birthday, would you please reply to this with—or by other means send me— something with colors you liked? Like an image or a video or a link. Music would also be acceptable if it gives you a strong synesthesiac association with color.

If this request confuses you, here are some examples of images with colors I found striking [Artists: Laurie Barmore, Vian Borchert, Erica Aurahack]. But your reply can be whatever colors you like.

@mcc There's something to be said for fully developing a specific aesthetic. For several years Mike Mignola honed contrast, negative space, and ~~~vibes~~~

Saw Dune: Part Two on Sunday and I am still thinking about it constantly. Without spoiling any plot details the movie is packed to the gills with incredible visuals that will stick with you for a long time. I highly recommend seeing it on the biggest screen you can.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@flockofnazguls @mielcarz @EvangelosSciFi I'll def be doing that on the first weekend with bad weather that it's possible, and I hope our local Cool Film Spot puts them on the big screen that way sometime - I bet they will.

Sounds like the third one is likely to happen, but after a multi year delay to let the actors age and the director do other stuff. Man people are gonna lose their shit. That book is dark as hell.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@flockofnazguls @mielcarz when I rewatched 1 after seeing 2 I was surprised to find I think it's a slightly better made film. Largely because story endings have to run on rails plot wise. But the interesting thing is, my wife and I both thought having seen 2 actually makes 1 better. You can see all the little things they were doing to set up part 2, artful little details. Haven't seen 2 a second time yet though

I do think the IR camera Geidi Prime sequence is the coolest part of either film

Bobby Lee - The HR Manager's Beautiful Daughter

A 3 minute slab of triumphant soaring choogle to kick your Monday into gear. This 2023 release Endless Skyways is maybe my fav full album so far in the emerging field of cosmic roots rock/psychedelic Americana (but he's British!) or whatever name settles out for it eventually. There's a song with an extended motorik style jam with a pedal steel solo (which is great even tho the pedal is mixed too far back)

Joni Mitchell - Coyote (live)

Joni is one of the greatest to ever do it. My favorite lyricist of her or any generation and a uniquely sophisticated composer & creative vocalist. Joni is an artist of the first rank historically, second to no one, massively influential on the form and content of popular song. She's long been well loved and respected but recent years have brought more public recognition of her real status. All hail.

Shoutout to departed author Vernor Vinge. It's a bit of a shame he's so associated with the idea of the singularity, which I think is a pretty bad and even ridiculous one when taken at face value and applied to the real world, because it's a fun fictional concept and he was an interesting and extraordinarily creative writer. Fire Upon the Deep remains a pretty staggering book and is a great entry point to his catalog and super far out sci fi in general.

    Late-Period Art Pepper Box Sets

    It is fitting that Art Pepper’s late and most productive period enjoyed this degree of documentation. Marginalized during the majority of his haphazard career, Pepper rose above the resistance to be recognized as a true original.

    https://www.allaboutjazz.com/late-period-art-pepper-box-sets-art-pepper

    mrcompletely,
    @mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

    @aaj yeah, Pepper was a messed up guy with an ugly story. But his last act had some grace, though it was crippled by his problems booking gigs and getting sidemen due to his history. In addition to some really interesting material like The Trip he became one of the all time great ballad players in that last decade of recordings. His solos on material like Over The Rainbow and Nature Boy are quite sublime and highly recommended

    @flockofnazguls @vathpela frankly, Musk is to Jobs as ketamine is to good quality L is a pretty rock solid comparison - K being a dissociative anaesthetic that is bad for your health long term & not in fact a psychedelic at all

    mrcompletely,
    @mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

    @flockofnazguls @vathpela yeah, I'm pretty cautious with my karma in that area. I certainly wouldn't mourn any mishaps but I'm not wishing harm either, it's bad for the soul in my opinion. Very natural reflex though

    mrcompletely,
    @mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

    @vathpela @flockofnazguls he's the fertilizer that makes it all grow, but Jobs made it seem possible to be A Cool Techbro. I did bet on him succeeding in 97 but I never got the fetish for the guy or his supposed coolness. But he's that aspirational figure for them, with a super arrogant "I am smarter than all, just follow my vision" approach but is still well liked. No one wanted to be Gates. And of course no one thinks the a16z nerds are cool either, but I think Jobs is how they see themselves

    mrcompletely,
    @mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

    @vathpela @flockofnazguls i once jokingly summed it up as "Andreesen is the Peter Thiel of Steve Jobses" which is what Colbert has termed "truthy" - it's not actually meaningful but it feels right
