It's so fun to have Kyrie in the league making Kyrie shots like that rather than chasing distractions. He's truly fearless in big moments

Jeffrey Alexander and the Heavy Lidders - Star Power

Triumphant cosmic rock. The best track on a good recent album https://jeffreyalexander.bandcamp.com/album/new-earth-seed

The "radio edit" of this song is six minutes, so I guess stop it at that point if you're a radio.

Since lyrics are all terrible anyway I think a couple bands should pivot to songs that are just about the act of jamming in exactly the same unironic way that post Zeppelin 70s rock bands had songs about rocking. What have they got to lose?

  • For Those About To Jam
  • I Wanna Jam All Night (etc)
  • We Will Jam You (OK that needs work)

If someone doesn't do it earnestly, Tapers Choice will do it as a joke and the opportunity is lost

You know the wooks and spunions would eat it up

Pet peeve:

  • a seemingly reasonably well written period novel (Babel by RF Kuang)
  • setting is early 19th century Oxford U
  • explicit focus of the novel is on language
  • character uses modern idiomatic phrase in dialogue ("say more")

Friends, I almost DNF'd it right there. You can't do that. Obviously that's on the editor as much as the author, but what are we doing here? Suspension of disbelief is a privilege not a right.

I'll stick with it tho. Silly premise but fun.

Joni Mitchell - Help Me (Court and Spark solo demo version)

I've been sitting with this for some months now and I...well, I really can't believe it.

I've never heard a better vocal performance.

Hey @paninid awhile back you asked who the American Gracchi were right? I just thought about that. Isn't it the Kennedys? JFK and RFK. In terms of the public/folk history and impact on politics.

Members of the oligarchy who advocated for reform and were killed by reactionary forces. Their murders normalized political violence and led into a period of destabilization in the republic. Seems pretty on point

Since a lot of folks don't really dig into profiles and pinned posts, and anonymous accounts understandably are viewed with suspicion by some, now and then I like to remind the TL that this account is just pseudonymous and I'm a real human named Tyler in Portland Oregon. The MrC persona is one I've had across several platforms for 15 years and keeping it is a matter of being easy to find. Plus it's a distinctly non work oriented & less political subpersonality. I'm not here to talk shop much.

The sublime Courtenay Pollock, who essentially invented tie dye as a western art form (as opposed to a craft, or the many advanced cloth dyeing forms in other cultures) keeps posting shirts and tapestries on his site ten or twenty at a time, and the latest batch includes this XXL stunner I'd buy in a hot second if it was my size. His work is more expensive than craft dye but cheap compared to cutting edge modern dye artists (some of whom are brilliant)

I'm hanging out in the ER waiting room with a friend killing time for test results. He's gonna be fine but it's very boring. Someone please tell me a great story. Nothing depressing please and thank you.

Nina Simone - Love Me Or Leave Me (live on the Ed Sullivan Show, 1960)

Last music post for the afternoon due to internet outage. Did you know Nina was a genius on piano? I used to post this on the birdsite once a year, so if you followed me there you probably do know it, but if not, check this shit out! The switch from the swinging jazz feel of the song into the Bach style classical instrumental break is amazing & the move back is even better👑

Joni Mitchell - Coyote (live)

Joni is one of the greatest to ever do it. My favorite lyricist of her or any generation and a uniquely sophisticated composer & creative vocalist. Joni is an artist of the first rank historically, second to no one, massively influential on the form and content of popular song. She's long been well loved and respected but recent years have brought more public recognition of her real status. All hail.

Okay let's listen to some great music by women bc there sure is a lot of it

We'll start with a few of my favorite current artists in different genres. First up is Noname and her second Tiny Desk concert. Her album Sundial was one of my couple favorites last year in any style.

Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway w/Jerry Douglas - live at Delfest (3 songs)

And now for something completely different! Molly is the up and coming queen of bluegrass. She's a flame throwing virtuoso on acoustic guitar, a flatpicking genius of the first order, and a charismatic bandleader and singer. Since switching to the bluegrass-forward Golden Highway lineup and material she's been taking off like a rocket.

Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda

I guess I'll be mad at myself if I don't post my single favorite piece of music by anyone ever, so here it is. There are no words for what Alice has given us so I won't try.

Ok now I'm really done ❤️

Nina Simone - Turn Me On

Well I was gonna do a long series of women in music posts but my home internet died so I'll wrap up with a couple from one of my absolute queens. Nina Simone is justly revered for her political songs, great cover versions and majestic personal presence but I'll hit you with a couple favs of mine in different styles, starting with this sultry bedroom soul smoker

Sault - Hold Me

One more from mysterious art-soul collective Sault, this one a gorgeously haunting, shimmering slow track. The production on these albums is unbelievably clean.

Sault - Up All Night

Sault is the coolest thing in recent music. They're a UK art-soul collective that flies heavily under the radar in terms of promo and social media. They're not all women, but women are heavily featured. If you want to know who's in the group you can look it up, it's out there. Their albums are wildly diverse, not all are in my fav style (some are kinda froofy choral stuff) but the stuff I like I absolutely love

One possible interpretation of is: if you actually want the power to fuck up the existing oligarchy, found an environmentally driven religion, but don't be surprised when shit gets really dark.

(this is clearer in the first two books than it is in the current state of the movies, though I suspect Messiah will clear that up when he makes it)

The energy for it is there, frankly. Just needs a plausible messiah and a couple fancy miracles

No, I don't think this is a good idea

Another fun, close game ending in a loss for the Blazers. This team has had so many injuries you'd think they tried to conquer Moscow in the winter, but they keep playing hard. I liked the minutes from Reath, and Simons always brings it. OKC had too much for em though. The SGA/Chet two man game is for real. Thanks to @caravan for another great night. With a young team I just like that they're competing, and getting to see the OKC stars in person was a treat. They're very good.
