My Friday rec for heads is the London Brew fusion project that came out earlier this summer. It didn't generate much buzz that I saw at the time and folks I find that perplexing. This album smokes. It was framed as a tribute to Miles and Bitches Brew but it's really just modern fusion Miles might dig, from a lineup of UK jazz killers (Shabaka Hutchings, Tom Skinner, Theon Cross, Nubya Garcia) and members of The Invisible, who give it a modern edge

SBD master recording, FLAC download

with:
Darol Anger - violin
Todd Philips - mandolin
Tony Rice - guitar

New show to circulation. Very high quality. The earliest clean DGQ tape there is. A hot one for fans of and Dawg (which touches on )

Dawg, Tony and the fellas are en fuego here. This is from before the album came out.

LeBron can stay on my TV as long as he wants. This is not exactly a deep thought but man he is still really good at this

So far when the Spurs are clicking they look nice but when they're not they look like a team built around a skinny rookie. A true "league pass" team, always worth a glance, but if they're getting smacked around find something else to look at unless you're really trying to see every Wemby minute

We're gonna need a term for "absolutely beautiful but catastrophically inappropriate for the season" weather. This century is so stupid already

Chelsea Carmichael - The River Doesn't Like Strangers

Absolutely fantastic modern album released on Shabaka Hutchings' Native Rebels label and produced by him. Carmichael is a member of Theon Cross' and Joe Armon-Jones' bands, and this debut as a bandleader makes it clear she's ready to claim her own name. The title track alone is worth the album price.

Not on any EOY list I've seen yet, but then, London Brew wasn't either, my album of the year by miles

I missed the second half, what the hell happened in that Celtics/Sixers game? No way Boston should lose to them without Embiid, but we already knew these playoffs are hella weird

mrcompletely, to nba
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

So fans Joel Embiid is having surgery and that sucks

I don't care if your fav team is another eastern contender, this is a fucking bummer. Everyone knows he was having his best and most enjoyable to watch season ever, by far, but I'm not sure everyone really saw exactly how amazing it was. By some metrics he was in the middle of the greatest NBA scoring season ever! At 1+ points per minute played he was even ahead of the legendary Wilt Chamberlain seasons for highest rate of all time.

I've been in and development for a long time and it's been good to me, I've gotten to work on stuff that doesn't do harm, isn't invasive, tries to respect privacy etc, so pretty low on the moral compromise scale, and I've been given a lot of agency and authority, but folks, I'm bored as hell with it. I like leading teams and guiding careers and making neat apps and all but as I near some apex of experience I'm running out of fucks to give. The ultimate fake problem, I know.

thoughts near the end of another firehose night of games. We're far enough into the season that things are starting to take shape.

  • overall the league has more good players and interesting teams than anytime since maybe the early 90s. It's wild. And there are all kinds of play styles out there which makes it extra cool

  • I've never seen a team like the Celtics. It's a totally unique lineup. Brown feels a little redundant but you know zinger will miss 3 weeks sometime

Ok just taking that article at face value for the fun of it:

Aliens exist - not weird at all.

Aliens being able to come here - a little surprising but cool I guess? Hopefully?

Aliens wanting to come here - seems weird to me but who can guess how aliens think right?

Aliens wanting to come here, being able to, but crashing all over the place like a bunch of wooks on ketamine and jager? Now that's weird.

Something is knocking em down...? What?

On purpose? Why? A test? Alien Motive X?

Well. I've been reading a lot as usual and there have been some good in there and some of the nonfiction has been excellent. But I haven't had a home run read in awhile and so it's time to dip back into the masterpiece rereads stack. I'm not quite in a Pynchon mood so tonight I'm starting Soldier of the Mist, one of Gene Wolfe's finest works, which by definition puts it on the all time short list of greatest genre novels.

Golden State has put together a really nice rotation without Draymond, and they're playing loose, with joy. It's time to move on I think, and move him for whatever they can get. No hurry, but I think they're better without him (no matter the outcome of this game). Kuminga coming on, Wiggins playing a bit better, Podziemski giving them reliable high energy minutes, it's a fun team to watch again

dear Mastodon, how seriously should I be paying attention to this current hype-attracting article? on the scale of "Michio Kaku is already working on a way to sell it to New Agers" to "if it proves out, warm up the Nobels"

Really appreciate access to professional wisdom here thank you 🙏

I hereby declare Sir Hans von Hake the patron anti-saint of effective trolling. Hear me out:

So it's the Holy Roman Empire days before the Reformation and the Catholic Church is at its most corrupt. Pope Whatever the 95th stomps the gas on selling indulgences in order to fund building the big ass Saint Peters building in Rome, and also enrich his cronies. One of the lead cronies is this putz named Tetzel, a corrupt priest who comes up into the HRE selling indulgences

I'm not a serious King Crimson fan, in fact hardly at all, but I'd go see this lineup if it was playing nearby, which is isn't, but they're playing just about everywhere else in the US, so here.

Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Steve Vai, Danny Carey is the lineup. I'm a huge Belew fan, Vai not so much but he can play the Fripp parts, Levin is great, but Tool drummer Carey is the ringer here - a chance to see him (he's insanely good) play non Tool material 👀👀👀

As someone who has seen an from totality and from 98%+, I would like you to know that 98%+ rounds down zero much more than it rounds up to totality. If you're at 98/99% you might think "eh good enough" but it really isn't. The corona effects are orders of magnitude different IMO

I mean 98% is still cool and weird in its way

Remember Shakti - Live at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, Sept. 2003 - FLAC and MP3 downloads

A very beautiful, extremely clean audience recording made from the 8th row by a friend. The drum sound is particularly realistic I think.

Lineup for this tour was:

John McLaughlin - guitar, macbook pro
Zakir Hussein - tablas
U. Srinivas - Carnatic mandolin
V. Selvaganesh - kanjira, ghatam, mridangam

A new Jerry Garcia Band recording I just circulated today: 10.21.87 matinee show from the Lunt-Fontanne Theater on Broadway in NYC. This includes the Acoustic Band opening set, the electric set, and the encore - this is the first board recording to include the encore track.

This was recorded by making a stealth patch into one of the remote PA speakers and thus is mono, but the tape is quite clean and direct from the cassette master.

So, I'm a state of deep and increasing skepticism about the Threads integration, but I'm leaving the channel open for awhile to make a slow and considered decision about the impact. So far I have a lot of ambiguous thoughts but this post is about the reappearance via threads of the toxic Twitter behavior known as the "quote tweet dunk" and especially the QTD RT, where someone flexes their own QTD on some mook via a boost/RT. It's shitty and I'm blocking the people who do it.

Downtown no longer has any idea what it is. It's chaotic both physically and in terms of identity. Under no circumstances am I placing blame or shame on the large unhoused/mentally ill/drug addict populations. The causality is complex and I have no solutions to offer. But shits pretty fucked up

One of you clever people on here recently observed correctly that Words With Friends contains an absolutely elite collection of "dark patterns" - manipulative, deceptive UI/UX designs. I've realized I see it now as almost nothing but that dark pattern maze, and now I'm wondering if anyone has done a meta game about defeating dark patterns, where there's a basic game wrapped in layers of this nonsense, but the real game is scored on your ability to avoid and efficiently outmaneuver the evil UI
