Nearly 40 years after it happened, I found another witness to the Naked Obese Peeing Pooping Whacking It Guy I saw at the Richmond '85 Dead shows - or actually that witness' kid who knows the story, but still an amazing moment. Shoutout to Paul who has had to live with that guy seared into his retinas like I have since I was 16

I've met a bunch of folks who were at the shows & everyone recalls the weather and the cops but fortunately for them they missed that particular slice of tour life

Since #jamband lyrics are all terrible anyway I think a couple bands should pivot to songs that are just about the act of jamming in exactly the same unironic way that post Zeppelin 70s rock bands had songs about rocking. What have they got to lose?

As a young fella just getting into #jazz in the late eighties my first impressions of David Sanborn were that he was corny and overly smooth, in an unhip bag I didn't dig with guys like Metheny and the Breckers. Then he blew my fucking mind with the Night Music show and I've respected him ever since. There was almost no really cool weird music on TV in 1988-90 except that show, and man, Night #Music was legit!!! Nick Cave, Bongwater, Pere Ubu, Miles Davis...

I'm one of those that finds value still in #reddit, especially the heavily moderated expert subreddits like the magnificent AskHistorians - unquestionably one of the greatest online communities of any era or platform. I also moderate a handful of subs and used to do more. The API changes effectively break reddit for moderation of non shitposting subs. It's not just 3rd party apps (which are crucial) but the automod bots many teams rely on. I support and have joined today's shutdown action.

I think the reason I've come to enjoy #reading well written #history more than novels recently isn't even as much about learning as the simple absence of tropes, narrative structure, meaning, etc, which are all just false constructs of art. Really important/interesting "characters" die randomly from the plague or just disappear. People make huge decisions for no real reason and never increase their self awareness. The pacing is awkward. Everything is chaotic and frequently stupid. I love it

So my personal take is still that I don't give a fuck about the success or failure of bluesky and I don't see Mastodon's success or failure as something relative to either that or Twitter. It's either worth being here or it isn't.

There's an artificial conception of this as a competitive zero sum game buried as an unquestioned assumption in most discussions of this. That's an artifact of investor capitalism which doesn't necessarily apply to the non profit driven Fediverse.

The latest date to be added on the unannounced winter Shabaka Hutchings tour is: #Seattle Town Hall 2/22/24. The only two other known US dates are the "album debut" on 1/15 in NYC, and the Newmark show here in #PDX on 2/23.

There's no info about the album is or who is on it, or who will play these west coast dates. Shabaka is IMO the best live performer in music today so I don't care, but the NYC show includes Brandee Younger and Esperanza Spalding 🤞

Trillium Lake is an overly popular but lovely recreation spot on the south side of Mt. Hood. If you get there early enough, especially on a weekday, you can beat the hordes of yahoos and families and get a nice paddle in. It's a little small really but very pretty as you can see. The north end with the reed and lily pad wetlands is particularly cool, we got to hang out with a blue heron as it poked around for breakfast. #kayak #paddling #oregon

Some thoughts on the new #GratefulDead official release, Dave's Picks 48, without having listened to most of it

• Hard for me to get excited about another '71 release, but I did check out the Other One and it's excellent, with a bit of a unique jam after the second space section starting at around 17'

• The 10.24.70 material is fantastic, historic stuff. Releasing it as filler is odd since it's so much more interesting than the main show but I'll take it however I can get it

Strongly cosign the #Shakti hype. Last time through twenty years ago was one of the best shows I've seen out of over a thousand lifetime. Peak #music experience. Seeing them again in a couple weeks and I couldn't be more thrilled. It is, as noted, pretty damn expensive, but if you can make it happen you should.

With all the recent movement and changes in the #nba, my favorite plotline has absolutely been the Golden State Warriors. Not only do we get the pure comedy gold of Warriors fans frantically scrubbing a decade of Chris Paul slander from their timelines, what could be more wholesome than the idea of two old foes like CP3 and Draymond out there together, two happy pals just punching guys in the nuts left and right? It warms the cockles, so to speak. No sack will be safe when that team is in town.

Hall & Oates - Live on the Midnight Special, 1977

As a rock/punk/metal/rap teen in the eighties there were few groups I hated more than the MTV version of Hall & Oates. I'm still not into that stuff, but turns out they were a killer live act in the 70s. From what I've heard they were even stronger before this but this is pretty great I think

The #Lakers are in the same place they were at the end of last year: very good, but unless AD suddenly starts playing consistently on the offensive end, one significant player away from the top tier teams.
