The Land Before Google

The Dot com boom. Gold rush! Microsoft is king of the Desktop but AWOL on the web. Downloads are sooo slow. In NZ 28k was typical if you had it at all (today it's 50000k). People still buy print but mainly for the CD. Search was terrible, their home pages were ad-ridden chaotic mess. Some people used Copernic Agent to do multiple searches on Yahoo, Excite, Lycos, Altavista, Compuserve (link if you miss the old internet https://www.compuserve.com/), /1

NKOTB - the late 90's

I forget that there were only two years of Google in the 90s. I was probably one of the first users.

Clean design, "ads but reasonable".

We learned about 20% time projects and developer culture.

We heard Monkeyboy Steve Ballmer chant "developers, developers, developers" at Microsoft's 25th Anniversary event.

Windows had a thing called Active Desktop. Your desktop was your browser. Unfortunately it was IE. Then that anti-trust thing happened. /2

Naughties - Don't Be Evil

Yes anti-trust. Total market dominance is having your name in the Oxford English Dictionary because your company name is synonymous with the action of searching for something on the internet. Microsoft had eaten Netscape but from the flames came the Firefox and eventually we got Chrome. Millions of hours lost trying to make IE work was about to end. By 2008 I had been on linux ten
years lol. /3

Personally I feel less safe in a larger car not to mention a truck

Not for me but for the people around me

There is no human on this planet who fully has it's vehicle under control all of the time

nf3xn,
@nf3xn@mastodon.social avatar

@stux lol wat??? I'm never getting in a car with you - as the driver you are legally required to have control of the vehicle at all times indeed failure to have control is in and of itself a serious offense in 100% of countries.

It's 75 years since the founding of the Council of Europe, so in a way - happy birthday to the most successful peace project in the history of humanity.

@quaithe Quite a few of the current members were under occupation for this time. I suppose having a better economic system was one way of undoing that.

Feels good to see that a man with a bin on his head received more votes for mayor than the fascist.

Congratulations, @CountBinface

  2. Wann ist das Referendum?

nf3xn,
@nf3xn@mastodon.social avatar

@sasha92 @osric Multiple ethical and safety concerns. For instance one obvious thing: they didn't loop it through the collar so they can't release it if she walks around a support and it snags. Best case: she is stuck and they have to take up the boards to get her out - traumatising her, worst case: she freaks out and hangs herself before they can get her out.

The people of England have spoken, and with a powerful and undeniable voice we have said:

Fuck off Tories.

nf3xn,
@nf3xn@mastodon.social avatar

@boud @paulcox @Philsturgeon Libs got that put to a referendum and it was rejected - remember?

nf3xn,
@nf3xn@mastodon.social avatar

@kgoetz @boud @paulcox @Philsturgeon That's the one - Cleggie got completely outmanoeuvred by "Give 'Em Enough Rope" Cameron.

nf3xn,
@nf3xn@mastodon.social avatar

@kgoetz @boud @paulcox @Philsturgeon What changed was that the Libs reneged on their election promises making them immediately wildly unpopular. The idea of the referendum was to give parties like them proportionally more say which was suddenly and sharply much less appealing than before. The Tories knew this of course and pressed for the referendum sooner rather than later before they became the hate object again. Politically the Libs have always been rank incompetent.

nf3xn,

@jackyan The Blairs just rotten corrupt duo. I nearly choked on my cornflakes when I learned of his 'appointment' as peacemaker. No doubt Labour will get back in and we will all have to unlearn about their shady deals and how good the illegal war was.

nf3xn,
@nf3xn@mastodon.social avatar

@jackyan Modern Western democracy; you have two main parties which are in reality a fascist and a centrist in a trenchcoat.
