Ok, so far AD is showing up. The Lakers running offense through him with LBJ and Reaves out is huge. He's being very aggressive in all the ways he sometimes isn't. If he keeps this up the pacers are in big trouble and if Haliburton can't figure out how to get it going through the traps they're laying on him it's over

Edit: see how they're just hammering the paint? No 3s and still kicking ass

noirlover,
@noirlover@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @BEK97 Pacers need one or two edgy players. They're too precious.

@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

Things I'm looking for in this game:

  1. who guards the stars and can they be effective at all?

Haliburton is the best pick and roll guard in the league (yes really), and LeBron is a force of nature when he needs to be. You can't stop either one, but you can't let them take over.

  1. does AD show up?

Time to let go of the idea that he's an every night offensive force. He's not that guy. But when he balls out on that end he's great and the Lakers are hard to beat. Pacers interior D is bad.

@noirlover@heads.social avatar

@shlenny @mrcompletely this game is tailor made for Lebron to score 50 pts. Vegas, all the media attention...no way he struggles, it's in the bag.

@noirlover@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @shlenny I can't get behind any Lakers team in this lifetime.

Last thought, most podcasts are trash. Usually either young sportsbro meatheads with childish views trading hot takes, insider industry vets playing footsie with each other and hinting at gossip, or hyper nerdy stat dorks who never played pickup arguing about math. But I liked the couple times recently Lowe and Reddick got together. They improve each other. Alone, JJ can be a schmuck & Zach gets all hyper and ADHD, but they bring really sharp thinking to the combo pods. Excellent insights.

noirlover,
@noirlover@heads.social avatar

@shlenny @mrcompletely quite a bit of finance bro discussion has permeated nba media. Trades, salary caps, contracts, etc. I detest the word "asset" and how it's used to describe a player. White guy calling a black athlete an "asset". WTF.

Not to mention the amount of gambling advertising that seems to be supporting the league and these podcasts rn. More red meat for the finance bros.

TNT guys are the best because they just talk about the game with charisma and chemistry.

noirlover,
@noirlover@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @shlenny yeah basically Giannis should be Shaq but he doesn't want to do it. This is mainly why the Bucks are a frustrating watch.

- revisiting early santana for the first time in eons at the behest of a (drummer) pal who suggested trying to background carlos & focus on the next-level collectivity of this specific group of players. and, like, shit yeah! it's probably just stating the obvious to say that santana were an incredible band, but it made them feel fresh to me. @vinylrecords

Time for the annual contrarian reminder that this album is significantly better than The Last Waltz. Just play this and then listen to Joni's far superior version of Coyote from Shadows + Light & maybe a Neil song from one of the ten thousand bootlegs you own if you care about Neil Young

Lmaoooooo okay thank the basketball gods the Wolves didn't lose to that scrubby ass warriors lineup after the ejections

The Draymond headlock is iconic of course and Rudy has been first team all-unlikeable for years so Dray is gonna win the PR battle among fans but really Rudy wasn't doing shit wrong there, looked like he was trying to cool it down not heat it up. But from Dray's angle it probably looked bad so he threw that lock on him from behind

Serious knuckleheadery afoot regardless

noirlover,
@noirlover@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely Always thought the Gobert hate was unfair. Like him as a competitor. He's not trying to bend into what the league or fans want from a playing style or persona standpoint.

some lunchtime thoughts after absorbing the weekend

  • the take that trading for Harden doomed the Clips is both true and silly. That team wasn't anything anyway. Russ will be fun on the Heat or whoever though

  • Philly is finally the team they should've been the last...3? 5? seasons: a fun, high-energy lineup around Embiid. They're enjoyable to watch for the first time in ages. Maxey making the leap isn't news anymore but it's deeper than that. Their team isn't perfect but it is coherent 🧵

noirlover,
@noirlover@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely Philly looks great. Lengthy, tough, deep team post trade. Maxey is unquestionably better than Harden. Harris looks rejuvenated. And they have one major advantage over Bucks and Celts...way better coach.

noirlover,
@noirlover@heads.social avatar

@shlenny @mrcompletely Terry Stotts resignation was not a good early indicator on that coach.

LeBron can stay on my TV as long as he wants. This is not exactly a deep thought but man he is still really good at this

So far when the Spurs are clicking they look nice but when they're not they look like a team built around a skinny rookie. A true "league pass" team, always worth a glance, but if they're getting smacked around find something else to look at unless you're really trying to see every Wemby minute

Some quick infrastructure reboot downtime thoughts on the four California teams after they paired up for a couple of really enjoyable early season games last night, starting with the winners:

The are in the same place they were at the end of last year: very good, but unless AD suddenly starts playing consistently on the offensive end, one significant player away from the top tier teams. They missed a bunch of their role players last night, but they won't move the playoff needle.🧵

@mrcompletely I'm looking for signs of friction when he dribbles for entire possessions.

Dame and Giannis just a little too much. Great game Sixers though! Oubre is a real nice addition. Bucks might need to add some perimeter D at some point but look great. Another kickass early season game

    The Meters - 9.17.1976 Bottom Line, NYC - FLAC SBD download - Remaster by Goody

    In the mid 1970s the Meters were one of the best live bands there's ever been. However this can be a pain to confirm because there are no great sounding bootlegs and only one live album which is just pretty good. With this remaster there still isn't a great sounding tape, but it's better, and has crossed the line from "listenable" to "enjoyable." Highly recommended regardless.

    Ok now that the smoke has cleared it's time for some offseason takes. Note I live in and root for the Blazers but I am first and foremost a fan of the game in general. Some thoughts post trade flurry:

    I still have Denver at the top until someone beats them in a playoff series. I don't think even a lot of smart hoops watchers have really accepted how great that Nuggets team was. There are a lot of potentially great teams out there, but there's one that's already great, and it's Denver.

    noirlover,
    @noirlover@heads.social avatar

    @mrcompletely

    celts - agree...don't believe in zinger, hortford old, embiid and giannis should kill, don't love coach's 3pt chucking

    milw - perimeter d major problem

    sixers - too much drama

    nugs - barring injury they are tops again

    suns - agree, cocaine team, will score but who does dirty work

    lakers - if lbj and ad healthy they're in the mix

    blazers - good trades

    gsw - kind of like 80s Dead

    Recently got the book "jail blazers" on the early pdx 2000s team. Should be good.

    This thread really hits home. While @briannawu positions it as policy leftists vs infinite leftists, it’s how I always framed a progressive vs a leftist. Her terminology is better.

    As a progressive, I often find it frustrating and often hostile dealing with leftists despite wanting the same or similar outcomes on nearly everything. https://mstdn.social/@briannawu/111058141632131670

    @mrcompletely @drewphish @chopaganda This is true. I lived with EF'ers in Humboldt for a semester back in the 90s. They were 100% action oriented and prevented a lot of old growth from being cut. And their motivation never waned, unlike many movements that fizzle out.

    Co-workers are not your family. You may like them, become good friends with them, hang out with them, help them move in exchange for pizza, but calling them your family is a way companies manipulate you into doing unrealistic things, things you would and should only do for real family.
