Some thoughts on nostalgia in art/culture, especially music

Of course nostalgia is weaponized to sell you back your youth and defang any revolutionary aspects of your chosen counterculture, everyone gets this by now.

But we also live in a temporally flattened aesthetic environment, meaning all prior eras of art exist equally in the present through digital mediation, outside of commercial retro marketing cycles. So your youth genres sit as part of an enormous network in aesthetic space

@mrcompletely I'm GenX and my clique HATED the 80s. The production techniques, the clothes, Ronald Reagan. Still don't like it. Millennials started embracing that era. They didn't have to live through it.

noirlover,
@noirlover@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely There's something about 80s music that resonates with millennials. Maybe similarly there was something about the 60s and 70s that sounded good to us in the 90s (still does). We had boomer parents record collections to roll j's on. They have Spotify and no cultural fault lines. Disliking 80s era of production...puzzled how Toto's Africa became a millennial anthem. Maybe the 2010s tech boom referenced 80s consumerism / careerism. Or things just go in cycles.

So fans Joel Embiid is having surgery and that sucks

I don't care if your fav team is another eastern contender, this is a fucking bummer. Everyone knows he was having his best and most enjoyable to watch season ever, by far, but I'm not sure everyone really saw exactly how amazing it was. By some metrics he was in the middle of the greatest NBA scoring season ever! At 1+ points per minute played he was even ahead of the legendary Wilt Chamberlain seasons for highest rate of all time.

noirlover,
@noirlover@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely Embiid is great but the scoring is so juiced now it's not fair to compare this era to previous ones. Prime Hakeem could likely put up Embiid's numbers today and Jordan would be averaging well over 40.

I do love how weird this season is, clearly a transitional year with teams rising and falling. It's still bizarre to look at the schedule and see a OKC Thunder/Utah Jazz matchup and think "Oh hell yeah" - Pacers/Kings should be lit too. A lot of the big name/market teams are still interesting but there's a ton of spice in the small markets and teams that have been bad in recent years, and seems like an unending number of cool young and midcareer players

@mrcompletely I'm biased but the Knicks are super fun.

Fascinating story here

Apple changed its podcasting rules — if someone doesn’t listen to a podcast for five episodes, Apple will turn off automatic downloads

Some big podcasts saw their download numbers drop by perhaps 40% — with potentially massive repercussions to come from their advertisers and sponsors

A wild and unsettling example of the bubbliness of the podcast market, and of apples outsize control

noirlover,

@clive it seems like streaming podcasts allows for dynamic, personalized ad placement, which is where the industry wants to go

Outrageous by Kliph Nesteroff. A history of censorship in entertainment. Both sobering and entertaining book citing examples when censorship went too far (ie "communist" related censorship) to examples when censorship was necessary (ie canceling things like blackface). Not a book for the "you can't be funny anymore" Joe Rogan set, as author makes the case there's more free speech today than ever.

Also the Nazis banned jazz in 1937. Listen to jazz.

Exile of Main Street - Rolling Stones. What more could be said about this album of deep cuts. The deepest are my fave--Sweet Black Angel, Torn and Frayed, Shake Your Hips. The artwork by photographer Robert Frank is supurb. My copy has an Amoeba Music clearance sticker on it for $1.95 from 25 years ago. Still spinning down Main Street after all these years in exhile / exhileration. @vinylrecords

In this massive day full of games, the Celtics scratch two starters, making these two games the most interesting of the day imo - which is not faint praise as it might seem. All four are up and coming teams with lots of talent and interesting lineups. Any of them but the Rockets could be just a single good trade away from moving up into the contender ranks. If you haven't seen these lesser known teams they're worth checking out.

noirlover,
@noirlover@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely Pels and Rockets--two perplexing and highly watchable teams.

@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

Great win for the Blazers. They've been close a lot but haven't been able to finish. I swear they have a nicely constructed team that should be and can be a little better than it has been.

My impression of the Warriors when I saw em in person a couple nights ago is that they're not going away easy at all. They're small, and a big team should beat them most of the time. But if you give them the slightest amount of room at all they're still gonna beat you and the Celtics made that mistake

noirlover,
@noirlover@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely as Charles Barkley says "live by the 3 die by the 3". Celtics 17 for 58, 29%. That's way too many 3pt attempts. Tatum with 3 free throw attempts. They just don't have midrange or go to the rim. Mainly coaches fault.
