Okay so this is an insane deal on 3M Aura N95 masks

440 of them for $60 - 14 cents each. 90% off the normal price.

It's Amazon, so stipulated that sucks, but if you are still masking (or anticipating a new surge or a new airborne pandemic or a bad wildfire) this is probably too good a deal to pass up

Regarding the concerns raised about Overdrive/Libby and privacy/data sharing...

I contacted SFPL and received a reply which suggests there may not be an issue, or as much of an issue, as it at first appeared.

The response I received follows

Everyone says we need a “fully staffed police department.”

It’s a weasel statement. Political posturing. Empty. 1/?

This is shocking - particularly when you think back to when librarians were so excellent about resisting requests for lists of borrowed titles a decade or two ago.

This should be raised immediately - in very firm tones - with SF Public Library

Got the shingles vaccine yesterday- strongly recommended by my GP.

It. Is. Kicking. My ass.

But having watched both my parents suffer with really miserable shingles outbreaks, I’m grateful there’s a vaccine and I could get it easily and for free. (Kaiser)

This is the first vaccine in ages that’s wiped me out, but I was prepared for it - why I got it on a Friday. I’d seen plenty of people reporting that it hit them hard and my GP warned me as well.

"Without surcharges, restaurants will have to raise prices or absorb the cost of higher wages and local mandates"

To be clear, what is required is that the part of the price of the meal that was buried in the surcharge, now has to be shifted to the price for the item on the menu. It's not raising prices, it's just changing how those prices are shown. But restaurants such as Pacific Height's Spruce don't want to do it and are making it sound like an attack on workers and consumers.

Why we can't have nice cities:

Here's someone who works at a downtown hotel: "I live in Dogpatch, and I usually drive to work."

It's two miles. 11 minutes by car. But 16 minutes by transit or by bicycle. And Google says it's a 48 minute walk, though it wouldn't take me that long.

Why do they drive to work? Probably because they get free parking at the hotel. And it saves them... 5 minutes

Scientists have warned of increased turbulence, particularly “clear air turbulence” which is harder to detect or forecast, as global heating warms air at higher altitudes and makes weather more unpredictable.

In the last few weeks, people in cubicles adjacent to mine have been at work with unidentified coughs (colds, RSV, who knows?), and identified pneumonia and COVID.

And some wonder why I prefer to work from home, or why I have a HEPA filter on my desk and wear N95s when I’m there

Do I miss team lunches? Well, yes, but not enough to risk the health of the at-risk people I live with. If I’d thought about people routinely coming to work with serious contagious diseases previously, I would have been doing this stuff years ago.

San Jose is training AI to spot homeless encampments

San Jose invited tech companies to mount cameras on a vehicle in what appears to be first-of-its-kind experiment

For the last several months, a city at the heart of Silicon Valley has been training artificial intelligence to recognize tents and cars with people living inside in what experts believe is the first experiment of its kind in the United States.

or if it is just for firearms, which the US seems to think are their God-given right and as vital as prescription meds to bring on holiday. Or something.
