I can't say whether Facebook joining the fediverse (ditto Google, which won't want to miss this opportunity) will kill or absorb the fediverse, though it's obviously and rationally something to worry about.

But preemptively blocking them -- and the people already using them -- from your instance guarantees less relevance for the fediverse.

It also guarantees, if my instance joins such a boycott, that I'll find a new instance.

I'm not fucking stupid to want to be able to talk to people on Meta's instance.

I wan to talk to the PEOPLE there, not Zuckerberg. I wouldn't want to BE on his instance, but I would want to be able to reach it and be reached by it so I can communicate.

It's like wanting to talk to friends who may be living in countries we don't get along with. Can we just make them leave? No. But do we just throw them away because of their geographical location? No.

Ugh seeing chatter about more high-level defederations. I've said my peace on this. If one thing is going to turn me off the fediverse it's this. If people I talk to who are completely innocent just vanish one day because someone starts getting philosophically irritated with their server admin what's the point.

I'll say again - there needs to be a client-to-client model somehow where the fediverse servers are nothing more than data relays and can e routed around if one or more go down. Then people can choose for themselves what's spam / dangerous and what isn't and block accordingly.

How did limewire work back in the day? Or Emule? Or how BitTorrent works now? Can't the connections be handled like that somehow? Truly peer to peer with servers just acting as jumpstarts to get the connections going?

@yassie_j It's an extreme "othering" that's easier to do because unlike other racial or ethnic groups that have basically assimilated (by choice or otherwise) into the "conventional" way of life, (fixed abode, nuclear-ish family, etc) Roma don't hew to that, which makes it easier to cast them as inscrutable bogeymen. "They're travelers! They could be anywhere! do anything to you! Then they're gone!"

It's bullshit designed to promote new onerous laws.

Right, because preventing people who want to talk to their friends on other platforms is the way to make decentralised social media work, yeah? I thought the whole point of interooperability was to, you know, interoperate? And then if you need to block, actually block the bad people doing bad things, not the entire universe of people that just happen to be using the same carrier as them either due to lack of tech savvy or their own network lock in effect?

This is basically collective punishment and does not in any way entice other people to leave Big Social. Hoe can we convince them to come over if we're blocked from talking to them in the first place?

I have to wonder something.

I know Billionaires are greedy, and generally, at the minimum probably sociopathic in order to have achieved their status.

I just find it interesting that not ONE of them has tried to make a gambit for historical immortality by allocating even ONE of their billions to trying to solve a hunger crisis. It could be a massive PR campaign / smokescreen/ charitable cover for them.
Is there some tacit agreement of the members of that class that none of their members would try to upset the larger global status quo in such a way?

I mean when you have Elon basically just TEXTING Bezos and casually asking for $2bn like it was a cuppa, it can't be that they really care about the value of a dollar.
