My folks are moving soon, so for mother's day I figured I'd get my mom a gift card for a tchotchke shop in her new town so she can start rebuilding her collection of wood blocks with inane things written on them.

The closest shop is the kind of twee gift shop that has syrups made from local berries and Christmas ornaments year round and dishtowels that say "Wine a little, Laugh a lot" Perfect.

Then I look through the shop photos and what even is this?

one of the weirder hard left takes is that Israel's importance to America is for Mideast Oil Reasons, which, lol, it is hard to think of a single time Israel has done anything but complicate this for poor ol' Uncle Sam, considering its ...... lack of popularity in the region

The cat brought a very alive opossum into the house. Said opossum was delighted to have been dropped into an enclosed space such as a shoe and hid in the toe box even as I encouraged him to vacate in favor of the densest bit of my garden. We eventually came to an understanding and he hissed at me from behind some lettuce.

There's a Greek term "Hamartia" which literally means "missing the mark" and which eventually got inextricably tied up with the Christian conception of "sin"

Jayden, our friend Justin, and I are going to drive a few hours north to catch the full solar eclipse next Monday. Looking like good weather โ€” fingers crossed.

Weโ€™ve got our (certified) glasses and Jaydenโ€™s picking up some solar filters for our cameras today. She works down the block from B&H and luckily they still have some filters in stock.

Anyone else have plans to see the partially or totally?

@Dylan my grandmother convinced us all to get to Western NY for a mini family reunion/eclipse party and then decided she wasn't up for it, so I'll see my cousins and the weather permitting the eclipse.

I raided Celestron for binoculars and glasses and a camera filter

@Dylan that'll be excellent. for the 2017 eclipse I had just a hand-held filter and it was a little frustrating to frame up shots and hold the filter up. I got something a little more automated this time. I don't have any lenses that'll get me that close, but we'll see what turns out.

Getting a lot of emails from a sender called AmericanFreedomReport[dot]Com.

I keep clicking into the emails because they're unhinged in a way that evokes a certain nostalgia for a time when I believed I could disentangle my mother from the constant barrage of pandering right wing money requests.

real question: how did you deal with coming out at work? I want to kinda ask my mentor (who is queer), but they've moved onto a new big senior position and I don't want to bother them, and then again I don't know if they ever had to come out or if it was just de facto.

@senanthic I'd imagine it depends a lot on your work culture, but in my office it'd just be "oh I can't do the after work drinks thing I have date." "Oh what's her name?" "His name is Gary" and then there'd be a brief look of confusion and then we'd move on.

I played a video for my dog of coyotes yapping, and she tilted her head and looked at it with great concern. I played a video for my dog of wolves, howling, and she couldnโ€™t have given less of a fuck if she tried. Iโ€™m not sure my dog understands the weight classes involved.

@senanthic 20ish years ago when Encarta was out and multimedia encyclopedias were a novelty, I was helping a friend's son with a project and we played the audio for African wild dogs. His two dogs ran in from the other room and sat at attention staring at the speakers.

@GayOldTime I like how hard we've flipped from names straight from the lab are space age and wonderful to "I can't pronounce this and am terrified of it" not without some reason, but it's pretty striking reading all the brand names in the ad.
