Happy !

I'm still not onto Black history. I'm still on white US history.

Q: Why were Black folk so happy when OJ was acquitted? To be honest, it feels disgusting. Why does it seem like you're happy he got away with murder?

A: Racism. Black folk did not like OJ that much. In fact, many Black people think he did it. Black folk didn't "celebrate OJ." Black folk celebrated the hope that a brutally unjust, evil, and racist system, could be defeated at all.

@mekkaokereke I was listening to live radio broadcast of courtroom audio. As I don’t need to tell anyone, the standard is not “did it” or “not”, but did the state prove beyond a reasonable doubt. And while we got news reports on all aspects of the trial, the jury only sees the witnesses. The police officers’ testimony was bad. To this listener, they clearly were obfuscating. As to other witnesses, what a jumble of often contradictory narratives. Any way, I did not second guess the verdict.

In the 1970s and 1980s, bands made money from album sales and concerts just promoted the album.

In the 2020s, bands make pennies from streams and rely on concerts to make money.

A industry scholar and former drummer looks at how this plays into the government’s antitrust lawsuit: https://theconversation.com/why-the-us-government-is-trying-to-break-up-live-nation-entertainment-a-music-industry-scholar-explains-230832

pomCountyIrregs,

@TheConversationUS @lisamelton Let’s not forget that the vast majority of bands, and mine was one of them in the 80s, got nowhere near a record contract, and the vast majority of those who did get a contract did not sell enough recordings to retire the advances.

Add that a shockingly small percent of those with a contract had one ten years later, and one should conclude that for a musician playing live or sidemen (union) gigs, not the hit record, were the ways to make a living.

It’s #BandcampFriday and you know what that means?!?

Yes, tomorrow’s Saturday, sure, but maybe it means you see a post and follow a link.

#ThePomegranateCountyIrregulars link is https://pomegranatecountyirregulars.bandcamp.com

We like to use it for early availability. Before appearing at the streamers, it’s there on our page. Two “sided” singles for June, July, and August, and the tenth album, “Constructivism in Blue”. You might enjoy something from “Too Lazy for Words: An Instrumental EP.”

It's official. On May 1, we will go worldwide with the single "Theme to an Imaginary Spy Movie (Deceivers Die)" b/w "A Hard Land." I thought to myself, self, I want to do a spy movie theme. Then, I had to come up with a plausible spy movie title. For the B side, some artifice as a character in the last line of a verse appears in the first line of the next verse. It's set in the west and in the past.

(It will be at Bandcamp much sooner.)

SitCom is short for Situationally Comatose, a knack which some actors possess, allowing them to hit their marks & deliver lines using only their autonomic systems.

This allows their higher cognitive functions to be placed in an induced Temporary Vegetative State to protect them from awareness of the banality of their work.

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@bytebro @Binder One person’s ennui is another person’s excitement for a new experience.

If anything, banal is overused because it suggests the speaker’s experience and taste is superior. And we know there’s an excess of self-proclaimed and self-deluded “superior” people.

The progression of is generally considered to go from negative (past) to positive (future).

For example, “year -1000” is commonly understood to mean one thousand years before the beginning of the common era. Similarly, “T-minus 30 seconds” means 30 seconds before some event happens.

What if this was inverted, such that the past is considered positive, and the future negative? My first thought is that, although mathematically equivalent, this would seem rather depressing…

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@argv_minus_one @Binder T-minus 30 seconds means 30 seconds before some event happens.

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@muz4now Thank you.

They say they have been cracking down on playlists that are generating what their monitoring and algorithms claim are false plays. I’ve done enough coding to know babies do get tossed with the bathwater.

There’s also a possibility that is more slimy. With the limit before payment, there’s an incentive to obscure tracks that are getting close.

Hecklers suck but throwing a fit about it and walking off? That sucks even more.

Not surprised to find out John Cougar Mellencamp is a big baby, tho.

(Should be noted that the hecklers were just shouting at him to play music instead of telling rambling stories 😅 ... Can't blame people who paid $100+ a ticket to hear music wanting to, you know, hear music and not the wandering good-ol'-days recollections of a boomer.)

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@etherdiver I have a few thoughts (I’m a boomer so you may turn away now). If one wants to hear the music, stay at home and play the records. If the show isn’t what one wants, leave and do something that’s more pleasing without disturbing the artist or fellow members of the audience. There’s a balance, but as a performer I believe some of it has to be for me and some for them. Contact my booking agent and I’ll disclose my fee for a one-on-one as they please private show.

A small voice in my brain is telling me to stop creating the Spotify versions of my weekly new music playlists. I don't know if anyone even listens to any of the tracks on them. I create the Apple Music one for my use. If others use it, that's a bonus. I've no idea if anyone listens to that one either. But it doesn’t matter as I do. Poll below.

Archive at https://canicula.com/wp/category/music/

Do you ever listen to the weekly new music Spotify playlists I create?

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@ianRobinson Because they won’t pay us small indies unless a track gets 1000 streams in a year, I’m no longer directing people to Spotify. I haven’t chosen, yet, to stop sending them tracks. The Dec., Jan., and Feb. releases (the latter out last Thursday morning your time) were set up before the announcement. I did include them when I set up the March 1 and April 1 singles a few days ago.)

I won’t opine on how someone else should or should not support Spotify.

pomCountyIrregs,

@ianRobinson I also thought if the underground railroad person left the fliers alone, she would have the foresight to teach them French for “May I see your ticket?” And doesn’t the conductor check tickets right after the last stop and not before the terminal destination?

But I’ll keep watching. What else is there to do on a Friday afternoon, watch Hail, Caesar? Wait, I did do that yesterday!

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@ianRobinson I hear you. I’ll be staying with it. I was a bit taken out when the Major and his Polish one night stand looked out to the night sky and watched the anti-aircraft display. “Why aren’t they in a shelter?” Now I’m asking why aren’t blackout curtains drawn?

The USAAF made a tragic miscalculation when they delayed building a long-range fighter plane. They thought B-17 bristling with guns would be enough. 1943 was very rough for the 8th. We’re likely to hear two lines about this.
