Holy shit. I just talked a cis guy on the internet down from "Let kids be kids" and got him to see why gender-affirming care for teens absolutely cannot wait.

This is one of my greatest achievements. I have a legitimate urge to take a victory lap.

@Impossible_PhD

This is awesome and thank you for sharing.

I remember I had a convo with a cis gay former therapist of mine who wasn't on board with puberty blockers, but was with trans healthcare overall, only to find out he had been grossly misinformed about how puberty blockers work hence his concern.

Just had a math moment when I realized why certain generations say things like "stop buying coffee" and the infamous avocado toast BS.

Let's say you spent $30/day, every day, on take out lunch and coffee/tea or whatever. If you stopped completely you'd save ~$11k/yr.

This would be the cost of US college in the 80s, ish:

https://educationdata.org/average-cost-of-college-by-year

And the median house cost in 1980 was ~$50k/yr (10% down payment of $5000).

Agreed. I had known the separate figures before but only connected it to the advice just now.

Does anyone have documentaries they like to watch that are soothing?

I've been searching for some, but it might not surprise that searching for documentaries while grieving typically returns results about death or true crime or similar, rather that something that's Just Nice and Not Traumatic or Triggering to watch.

🤔

@shanselman Oh huh that looks like an interesting one, thank you!

Ok I finally got mentally past the fact that you need to create an account for Arc (rather than local profiles).

This browser is nice, I'll give it that. Damn.

Finally figured out the reason that webcams were weird on Vivaldi is because apparently Google Meet is "autoplay" so disabling that caused shenanigans.

For - what are your favorite not-a-human accounts to follow? I like @nocontexttrek a lot personally. Mainly because of the weekly Seven of Nine :startrek: posts on Fridays :blobfoxlaugh:

Call for info - primarily for BlackMastodon, but also for anyone in a historically underrepresented group who finds themselves frequently needing to educate those in overrepresented groups. On behalf of the Hachyderm mods: we see you, we want to help. Proposal:

  • What: Curated, attributed list of work including people to follow, hashtags, and other resources
  • Location: our user documentation
  • Goal: create a resource for people to see / reference, rather than have the same conversation 50x.

Something that would be a neat feature for the Calendlys / Cals of the world:

Some sort of "coupon code"-like feature where, if you want to allow a schedule override you can. e.g. if you normally schedule in CST (US) and need someone to have availability in Europe, you can give them a coupon-override to get earlier in the morning, or perhaps even a weekend (context dependent) to accommodate, rather than have your usual calendar avail just start at 5 AM on the regular.

Relevant to my Too Many Tabs Friday complain post, something that I do that normally helps with this is Close All Tabs Friday.

Basically on Friday I force myself to either read or bookmark the damn thing, because if I haven't by Friday I won't. And if I'm keeping the tab for "research" then I should be saving it, not floating it on my screen.

It's one of those things that took a few cycles to train my brain around, but honestly it really helps.

Sharing in case this is useful to anyone ❤️

I randomly remembered a blog post and interactive map that I saw awhile ago now (apparently c 2018) about All Roads Leading to Rome. It's a lovely project and while some of the links may be inactive now the visuals are awesome

In a cPTSD engendering world, I wish more resources were in place to help kids+adults have A+ coping skills and available help at all levels.

Trying to learn anything, let along coping skills, when you're already going through the trauma isn't great.

For anyone with Gather Town:

Amongst the Fall Items is a Baba Yaga house. You can make a little patch for your Baba Yaga house, make it a private area, and boom: all your 1:1s are in the Baba Yaga house.

Premise for a scifi novel (or something) that I'm not sure if it exists already or not:

There is only one soul in the universe, and while as a life form the soul experiences linear time but can be reborn as any species, on any world, at any time. Not sure what happens once the being is born as every beetle, cat, human, non-terrestrial species, etc.

I know this post may date more than a fair few of us, but what was your first computer? (This includes family computers, for those to whom this applies.)

Mine was an Apple IIGS that was bought before I was born. Was reminded of that sweet old school look-and-feel by an account that's tinkering with one on oldbytes.space .

quintessence,

@thomasfuchs I hear ya. I remember we replaced the IIGS around ~2000, with it's whole 9 GB HDD. "It'll last forever."

Oh my data.

IMO, those fees are to continue to disenfranchise people after Floridians voted to restore voting rights to felons because Florida Republicans don’t actually care about votes:

I can't find when the law was first enacted, but considering that 40 states have programs like this I don't think it was a reaction to that. I know the law has been in place since at least 2015, since that's when a CNN article written about a different person (in FL) experiencing the same was written.

To be clear: this isn't a defense. It's all awful.

I've been debating on writing a blog post on grief and how we don't deal with death in the US at all. Between my mother and fiancée passing so close together (and for unrelated reasons) I feel like I have a lot to say around You Thought American Healthcare Was Bad, But Wait There's More: Meet American Death Logistics.

Seeing pieces about the housing crisis making rounds:

https://www.zillow.com/research/buyers-income-needed-33755/

When there's reporting on the housing crisis, it's almost always "average home value" which I disagree with. I think we should be measuring:

  • Average price per sqft
  • Average sqft per home
  • Average home type

I can tell you right now that a 0-1 bdrm apt in Seattle WA is about the same as a 2-3 bdrm house in Buffalo NY. 1/2
