Was reminded today that the Zoom / Docker issue on Macs is still a thing. If this impacts you:

  • Neither zoom.us nor the Zoom app will open successfully if you have Docker running.
  • Zoom will work normally if you close Docker / kill the process.

The earlier fix I saw for this is changing your MTU setting, as detailed in this support thread.

“She Only Served 10 Months Behind Bars. Florida Still Slapped Her With A $127,000 Bill.”

IMO, those fees are to continue to disenfranchise people after Floridians voted to restore voting rights to felons because Florida Republicans don’t actually care about votes:

Unclear why Reason article does not mention that.

I can't find when the law was first enacted, but considering that 40 states have programs like this I don't think it was a reaction to that. I know the law has been in place since at least 2015, since that's when a CNN article written about a different person (in FL) experiencing the same was written.

To be clear: this isn't a defense. It's all awful.

For anyone following the Pay To Stay case that is in the news from FL:

https://www.abcactionnews.com/news/local-news/i-team-investigates/pay-to-stay-florida-inmates-charged-for-prison-cells-long-after-incarceration

It is unfortunately common in the United States, and not limited to FL.

CNN article from 2015 about the same practice:

https://money.cnn.com/2015/09/18/news/economy/prison-fees-inmates-debt/index.html

Wikipedia page states that as of 2021, 40 (out of 50) states have Pay to Stay programs for their jails.

The emergency slide has requested and been granted whistleblower status.

@mekkaokereke On first pass (of the title) I couldn't tell if they were suing Boeing due to the emergency slide causing damage, or if they were already suing Boeing.

For the passers-by: the emergency slide, of all the places it could've gone, went to the place already suing Boeing for the door coming off in-flight.

If you could re-invent / re-imagine how email works (protocols): what would you change to make spam prevention easier / the default rather than reactive?

Premise for a scifi novel (or something) that I'm not sure if it exists already or not:

There is only one soul in the universe, and while as a life form the soul experiences linear time but can be reborn as any species, on any world, at any time. Not sure what happens once the being is born as every beetle, cat, human, non-terrestrial species, etc.

Reminder for those in the continental United States: the total solar eclipse is Monday. Totality (when the body of the Sun is obscured) is at different times in different locations so make sure to check what time totality happens for you at your location.

⚠️ Do NOT rely on timezones to figure out totality at your local time. ⚠️

e.g. Totality at:

  • Dallas - 13:40 CT (12:40 ET)
  • Cleveland - 15:13 ET

Random annoying thought on US medical system dysfunction:

There are of course many broken things, so this is just limited to one tiny broken bit. Another consequence of not knowing anything about the complete bill and what you're being charged for. Texts and/or emails that are reminders to pay for some component of a bill via this payment processor or that with no easy or direct way to know if it's spam. Cool, cool.

I know this post may date more than a fair few of us, but what was your first computer? (This includes family computers, for those to whom this applies.)

Mine was an Apple IIGS that was bought before I was born. Was reminded of that sweet old school look-and-feel by an account that's tinkering with one on oldbytes.space .

quintessence,
@quintessence@hachyderm.io avatar

@thomasfuchs I hear ya. I remember we replaced the IIGS around ~2000, with it's whole 9 GB HDD. "It'll last forever."

Oh my data.

Holy shit. I just talked a cis guy on the internet down from "Let kids be kids" and got him to see why gender-affirming care for teens absolutely cannot wait.

This is one of my greatest achievements. I have a legitimate urge to take a victory lap.

This is awesome and thank you for sharing.

I remember I had a convo with a cis gay former therapist of mine who wasn't on board with puberty blockers, but was with trans healthcare overall, only to find out he had been grossly misinformed about how puberty blockers work hence his concern.

Seeing pieces about the housing crisis making rounds:

https://www.zillow.com/research/buyers-income-needed-33755/

When there's reporting on the housing crisis, it's almost always "average home value" which I disagree with. I think we should be measuring:

  • Average price per sqft
  • Average sqft per home
  • Average home type

I can tell you right now that a 0-1 bdrm apt in Seattle WA is about the same as a 2-3 bdrm house in Buffalo NY. 1/2

Just had a math moment when I realized why certain generations say things like "stop buying coffee" and the infamous avocado toast BS.

Let's say you spent $30/day, every day, on take out lunch and coffee/tea or whatever. If you stopped completely you'd save ~$11k/yr.

This would be the cost of US college in the 80s, ish:

https://educationdata.org/average-cost-of-college-by-year

And the median house cost in 1980 was ~$50k/yr (10% down payment of $5000).

Does anyone have documentaries they like to watch that are soothing?

I've been searching for some, but it might not surprise that searching for documentaries while grieving typically returns results about death or true crime or similar, rather that something that's Just Nice and Not Traumatic or Triggering to watch.

If you could use a miracle of time to do more of something, be it an event or occasion that ended or time with a person (whether they're still with us or not), what would you choose to do?

The half-baked philosophical conundrum that keeps me up at night most often is simply: why is my consciousness limited to me in particular? Why am I not everyone? Or everything? or nobody? Or you? Or an ant? Or an ant colony? How did I find myself in this particular stream and what is the nature of the boarders that keep me within it?

This idea generally frustrates and freaks me out and I doubt there is a sensible answer, I doubt it's productive to think about, but I worry on it over and over.

quintessence,
@quintessence@hachyderm.io avatar

@kmck @futurebird

This resonates with me. And then there are people with DID and are the alters multiple consciousnesses or...?

Everything around consciousness, including the fact that it's time bounded (particularly the end part) gives me existential dread. I'm glad I'm not alone?

Are there any good online grief groups that anyone has found useful?

quintessence, to random

I've been debating on writing a blog post on grief and how we don't deal with death in the US at all. Between my mother and fiancée passing so close together (and for unrelated reasons) I feel like I have a lot to say around You Thought American Healthcare Was Bad, But Wait There's More: Meet American Death Logistics.
