I have a simple rule: if someone asks me a question that can be a Google query, don’t answer them.

This is because I don’t like doing Google queries on someone else’s behalf.

And if they really wanted to know the answer, they would do the work themselves.

Of these time zones, which is the best?

randulo,
@randulo@mastodon.social avatar

@evan None. Central European Time, currently CEDT, rules.
Eastern wins, only because it's closest to CEDT.

So far, I’m not liking how Threads posts render on my Akkoma server.

Too much of it is no text – just a big ginormous paperclip.

And what is that paperclip? Well, when I click on it, it opens up a new tab to reveal… a screenshot of a Tweet.

All of this could be bloody avoided if Threads people put the contents of the tweet in their posts. Or even better, if Threads actually rendered these pictures in the post and put in alt-text as well.

I’d tell these Threads people how bad these posts look on the Fediverse, but none of them can see my replies. Thanks, @zuck!

(Also, if the link to the post doesn’t show up, don’t blame me. Blame Threads. You don’t need to click it anyway since I’m providing a screenshot of what I’m seeing.)

I walked by a nursing home and saw people sitting at tables, kind of looking at I don't know what.

Next I was in a medical waiting room with 15 people, 13 of them of all ages were scrolling on phones.

In 20-55 years will they be scrolling in the home? Or have a Meta visor on? Or wireless implant?

@sarajw right now I'm able to reflect on life, have ideas, think about stuff rather than filling my time with filler. I'm curious whether after 80 I'll still be capable of that. I feel like, yeah, it's time going to waste in a waiting room, but it is still TIME. I think it's less of a waste of my own brain. I'm not judging, to each his zone.

Different social networks attract different kinds of people, even when they all look a lot like Twitter. I know a few people who are on several, like me. I continue to maintain that Mastodon has more food for thought than the others and is more useful for getting answers. I honestly believe there's more sincerity here. Of course, it's partly because of the number of instances which bring a diversity of thought and lifestyle.

I just closed my accounts on two others, Spoutible and Post. Both were majoritarily US political ranters without word filters. On Mastodon, you can decide to never see certain words or names. This is a huge thing. Even Twitter has word filters.

Finally, there are large lists of accounts by profession, such as scientists and other academics, the arts, journalists, etc. These can be imported with a few clicks. Another huge feature of Mastodon.
https://fediverse.fans has an interest-based list.
Or, there's this great list:

From John Mayall interview in Guitar World Magazine, June, 2020. This is why I put Bluesbreaker in my pseudo. There are about 30 guitarists that are in the "club".

I like to thank everybody for a going to look at Shane's bandcamp & encouraging him. That's fantastic. Appreciate your support very much. We've been working together on this music or the thousands of miles in separate us. I'm pretty impressed with the progress he's made so far. My personal favorite of what he's posted so far is this one:

This is big: Nearly 60 million Americans are at risk of losing internet access within weeks, in the most urgent economic disaster you haven't heard of: https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/23/tech/acp-affordable-connectivity-program/index.html

randulo,
@randulo@mastodon.social avatar

@b_fung here in France you can get fast Internet for mobile at about $15 a month including 5G. I believe you can get fibre home Internet for less than $30 a month. Insufficient competition in the United States probably prevents something like that.

randulo,
@randulo@mastodon.social avatar

@rustoleumlove @b_fung isn't it the capitalism of huge providers like Comcast from preventing initiatives for the poor to be more common? I think it really should be in here right in this day and age to access the Internet

How many guitar players do you think there are in the world?
They say 712 million, roughly 10% of the world's population has "picked up a guitar and played it, generally between the ages of 13 and 65".

That would exclude me!

Moving to another Mastodon server?
Be sure to go to preferences, import/export and export you folloing list and whatever else is important to you first. Then, import that list when you've moved.
