I fear for this pending writers' strike.

As you may recall, such strikes in the past led to the creation of things like reality TV.

What fresh hell would another one unleash?

The right wing movement behind legalizing child labor in the US is NOT about parents' rights. In fact, these laws as originally drafted didn't generally include parental consent for a minor to work, even in dangerous conditions.

@xiann I was saying recently, more education tends to lean one more left. Which explains why those on the right literally want their constituents to be less educated.

There’s been a push in the same way here in Ontario, from our Conservative premier. He recently started pushing to get students into trades rather than going to post-secondary education.

Yes, trades are great and can be very lucrative. But it also HAPPENS to keep them out of more school, so less left-leaning. Coincidence?

Y'all, America desperately needs to embrace the metric system.

Fer reals.

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@jimgoodall @vwbusguy @saramg Out of curiosity, which construction measurements are metric?
We had a reno done recently, and decided our ceiling heights in feet, all the studs remain 16" on-centre, etc.

I'm old enough to still weigh myself in pounds (vs. the doctor weighing my daughter in kg, requiring my using a calculator), still use F on my oven, and had until quite recently, for decades, thought I was six feet tall because my driver's licence says I'm 180 cm.

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@jimgoodall @saramg A couple of years back I was also stunned to discover that Canada and the U.S. are among the I think only TEN countries on the planet who still use "letter" sized paper instead of the way more intuitive A1, A2-type sizing.

Hey, North America and the handful of others: Time to let it go, already.

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@del @saramg @lmgenealogy

Problem there being, we sure as hell don't have a standard for that in Canada.

In one shopping trip and for Canadian products, I'll see best before dates ranging from 06MR2023 to MAR 06 23 to 2023MR06, along with the ever-loathed 06-03-2023 (with no indicator of what's what, so wait, is that March 6th, or June 3rd?)

More than caring what the format is, I just want us to agree on one and have everyone fucking do it that way.

Confused.

A neighbour hired someone to come in with a gas-powered leaf blower to blow out her patio-covered back yard.

Which is enclosed on every side.

Meaning all this could possibly have accomplished is blown stuff around in there and had it resettle elsewhere also in there.

But at least it's cranking exhaust out into our air while it does that, so that's a plus... 🤷‍♂️

@protonmail Hear hear.

The problem I (and I suspect many others) have is trying to get everyone I know on board with any one E2EE platform.

And given the basic security practice of not having apps on your phone that you don't need, I'm not about to get a handful of texting apps just to communicate to various friends opting to use one proprietary method over another.

reay,

@mhoye I just signed up recently for SimpleLogin, and it's been pretty sweet so far. It even puts a clickable icon at the end of email fields to create custom addresses on the fly, and already knows to funnel them to your main email address in the background.

The only time it hasn't worked (of the handful of attempts at using that option I've tried) was for Adobe, which is a BIT too clever to fall for it. But generally, a great system.

We finally saw the last episode yesterday.

I thought it was good but not great. Largely I think because of the fighting scenes with Gideon.

Mandalorians are supposed to be known galaxy-wide for their badassery and battle skills, but the fighting against Gideon lacked that flavour for me. They should’ve been more of a challenge instead of him just being able to slap them around.

Like, yes, he knows how to fight, but in theory, not as well as they do.

1/2

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

What I would’ve liked to see is them giving him a real challenge despite his being clad in armour, like that being the only difference between him and having his ass handed to him, and then just barely.

When he was mocking Bo-Katan for Mandalorians only being dangerous with all their gear available, that shouldn’t be the case. MORE dangerous, yes. But not less dangerous to the point of losing fights to an inferior opponent without it…

1/3 (oops)

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

… but in this case, he was kind of right. They simply weren’t as big a threat to him, even two on one (bananas) that they should’ve been.

Mando was way more impressive in his own escape than he was in the fight against Gideon. It’s almost like he wasn’t as capable in that fight as he was everywhere else, which felt and looked weird.

But that aside, the finale — the wrapping of the long-led-up story and its execution — was solid.

I was able to make it to a friend/co-worker’s farewell drink last night at a local pub.

That’s the first time in years, way pre-Covid, that I’ve had a chance to do that.

There’s something unique in that experience that I’ve missed. It was really nice to have a taste of it again.

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

For the record, I was debating wrapping this post with “In conclusion, more of my co-workers need to move away so I can drink at bars more often”, but while I loved that part, I didn’t want to ruin the sincerity of the message.

Having said that, yeah, co-workers, let’s step it up, okay?

Oh cool, DuckDuckGo now accepts pay-for-placement and doesn't review ads manually and so, now scam websites are in first position.

Cool cool cool.

reay,

@TheRednBlackOne @fasterthanlime I tried Brave for a while. I was a bit irritated by not being able to pin wanted links on the home page. It kept replacing them with where I'd recently been, instead.

That was small.

But when one of its ads -- the ones I signed up to get credit for, I forget the term -- slid in over top of my word processor I was working on (Brave was running in the background, but it ran an ad over the full-screen program I was using on top of that), I was done with it.

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@youronlyone @StartpageSearch @fasterthanlime

Was Startpage not taken over recently by a company with interest in collecting data, though? I may be conflating it with other search engines that have run into the same issue, but I recall switching to Startpage a while back, hearing that (or some relative bad news about its change of ownership or policies) and switched to DDG.

... which I'll now be changing from, evidently.

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@fasterthanlime Giving searX a try... we'll see how this goes.

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@TheRednBlackOne @fasterthanlime They hadn't heard of it, either, when I contacted them about it. In fact they had no idea how it even COULD happen, where effectively something in the background forces into the foreground over a third party full-screen program. Which I totally believe -- I know it's still relatively early days for the browser and team and bugs are still getting worked out -- but it certainly happened, so that was the last straw for me as far as the browser goes.

reay,
@reay@mastodon.social avatar

@youronlyone @StartpageSearch @fasterthanlime Ah! Good to know.

I just tried out searX on my phone and the screen shot below was the second search result I got.

Nothing? There’s nothing on the entire internet you could direct me to regarding the area of a circle vs the area of a square? That’s… unlikely? 🤔
