Came across this reaction video to a white dude saying that the "n-word" was just as bad as "cracker". I'm sorry but if someone called me a cracker, I'd take zero offense. If anything I'd stop and think "hey, did I just do something racist?"

Anyway, here's the reaction video mentioned, by a black guy. I love this guy, please do watch, it's just 30 seconds long.

reina,

@evilroda I don't view slurs targeted at the hegemony as particularly bad. Sure, it is a slur, but it's so mild I just do not care. It can't be compared to any other racial slurs imo because white people are the hegemony.

For the record, I am white too. I still don't care. If anything, it cracks me up. Badum tss ;p

I have two questions about legibility for blind people on Fedi.

Does word shortenings and stuff make things illegible to you? For instance, if I write "smth" instead of something or "idk" instead of "I don't know", does that make it hard for you to follow?

I'm kinda oldfashioned when it comes to emoji. I usually write them using symbols rather than unicode. Does that become a jarbled mess for you or do you understand the meaning of things like :) and xD?

If any of these are an accessability concern to you, I'll do my best to address it for future posts of mine.

Twitter wants to be a bank ... with how much testing in production they've done, how tf do they expect me to trust them with my debit card information? xD

Just saw some people discuss whether keeping your existing JEEP for longer or switching to electric ASAP is better and I'm just like ... :cat_facepalm:

First of all, please stop buying huge cars! If you absolutely need a car, pick the smallest one you can get by with. Smaller means less wear on roads and less energy needed to push the vehicle forward.
EDIT: if you need a larger family-car, consider a station wagon. They are compact but with lots of space. They're also less likely to kill someone in a collision than a SUV is.

Secondly, we should strive towards not needing cars. Investigate your alternatives. If you can get to and from work without a car but still live in a car-infested place, consider sharing a car with your neighbours.

Cars is the problem. Switching to electric isn't going to solve anything. It's only going to change the emmissions from the exhaust to road wear. And just so we're clear, road wear is a huge problem economically and environmentally. And so long as large parts of your electricity comes from fossil fuel, well, electric cars could even be said to be worse for the environment than fossil cars ...

reina,

Please advocate for walkable cities where you live. Advocate for public transit. The more available public transit is, the more people will take it.

okay I've been giving Wayland another go on Plasma for these last couple of days, but it still just doesn't work for me.

I have to start things like Nextcloud manually when they should be launched automatically. Sometimes it randomly works, but most of the time it doesn't.

And windows won't just open back up where you last left them. I didn't even realize this, but my workflow really depends on the filebrowser opening on the bottom left, the terminal on the top left, text editor on the bottom right and so on and so forth.

There is no option for this, even though it is the only sane option in my imo

reina,

@schratze Can't you setup a systemd service that auto-launches nextcloud on boot/login?

Please, stop putting moving stuff on your webpage unless the movement comes from an interaction or is actually necessary to convey important information (though, do have a reduced motion option for those kinda things too).

I was looking through some YouTube channel's merch page and it had a search bar with a message that kept changing every 3-4 seconds and every time it did, it stole my focus ...

I just saw a product called "dude wipes" ... Please, this has to be a fake product, right? Are guys really so fragile they can't use wipes unless they state they're "for men"?

As a woman, I get annoyed by this with stuff advertised for women too btw, like razors "for women". Seriously, if there are differences between the "for men" and "for women" products, how about you state what its purpose is for instead? Like, say your razor has a shape ideal for shaving legs, why not just call it a leg razor or whatever?

Why are stuff pointlessly gendered? ...

reina,

@PissBoyChudPunter oh no, but that's gay isn't it?

Money is fake. We made them up. They're just numbers. So why are they so important that not having them can be lethal?

If Jack Dorsey & Elon Musk (who are friends) just wanted to run a MAGA site full of fascists, they could have just bought Parler & saved themselves approx 43.999 billion dollars.

What they wanted was to cripple the sad remnants of investigative journalism, and the political left, which successfully used Twitter for political organizing, activism & messaging throughout the Trump regime.

Why would anyone who cares about either of these things go to Jack's project.

reina,

@void_trans @chargrille That's what you have boosts for? If it's really good or important, people will spread it around so it reaches large parts of the network.

reina,

@rolle @johnhowesauthor @chargrille Spinning off from what you wrote,

If people can understand how to use email, they should be able to understand fedi. Like, why is it that people understand that gmail, hotmail, whatever, is a provider and not email itself, but find it so hard to understand that the same thing applies to the fediverse? And that you can check your email using the gmail client, outlook, Thunderbird, the mail app on your phone, or whatever, but not that Mastodon, Tusky, Toot!, Calckey, Akkoma, and so on all let you communicate with the rest of the fediverse even if they look differently? It's weird to me.

But I can agree that the fedi network generally has a loooooot of techie people on it which normies find uninteresting. But is that really it? Because I think that's true for most stuff that isn't yet mainstream.

can't believe tumblr's gonna let FACEBOOK beat them to activitypub implementation even though tumblr said they were working on it like a year ago

reina,

@vulp I feel very strongly about Facebook embracing the fediverse as Facebook has an extremely poor track record of extremely poor handling of personal data while also having a history of collecting a fuckton of personal data.

On top of that, they are huge and have a very strong incentive to embrace, extend, extinguish.

And yet on top of that again they have a history of extremely poor moderation to the point where it's led to genocides. They're also very much allowing the spread of misinformation. And they care much more about advertisement and corporations than about the people using the service.

Now, Tumblr on the other hand. Well, I'm not going to say they're perfect, but they're not really a big threat imo. They're fairly large but probably not much bigger than mastodon dot social (that's a guess tho). If memory serves me right, they're owned by Wordpress or the same owners as Wordpress which is open-source and run like an open-source business. These two make me think they're unlikely to EEE. I think there was talk about Tumblr eventually being made open-source or at least parts of it too?

On top of that, the community there is just much better. Lots of queer folks and furries. It doesn't feel like you just let in LinkedIn on your whacky social media.

That said, it just means I'm less weary about them. Which might be a bad thing as "that's how they get you". But I can at least clearly say Facebook should stay the fuck away. ActivityPub will become email 2.0 if we let them.

#Threads privacy panel lol

What else do you want? A pap smear?

reina,

@Ashley I wonder how the "give them the benefit of the doubt" crowd will respond to this. I mean, surely we can't know if they'll be selling that data or using it for nefarious purposes. We obviously have to wait until we know for sure they're doing something harmful with all this data before we block them, riiiight?

(the levels of sarcasm in this post is very high)

reina,

@hughster @Ashley Lol, it's not like I wasn't expecting them to be collecting all the data they could, I just wasn't expecting them to be so transparrent about it.

Anyway, they're collecting a fuckton of data and they've historically mishandled that data. In what world is this "nothing to worry about" when they're now integrating into a network of users who do not want them to collect this data? I think it's very worrysome. It doesn't matter if the self-report said "we do not collect any data" or if they're over-reporting. The fact is that they've historically been a company who will over-collect and abuse, sell, and mishandle that data. There is a lot to worry about.

Threads app privacy/“data linked to you” is tripping ballz

reina,

@OctaviaConAmore @studiofox @ampersand Do I smell a James Stephanie Sterling fan? :blobfox_eyes:

reina,

@pixiekat @studiofox I am very anti-Meta, so don't take this as a defence of them. I think it's because (I assume) like in Facebook, you can open webpages inside the app like a browser. The privacy reports are self-reported and not based on requested permissions from the system. I don't think Apple lets arbitrary apps read your browser's history.

But yeah, that they're collecting the in-app browsing history is icky on its own. Imagine Firefox sending your history to Mozilla "so they could improve browsing experience on popular pages" or whatever ... Icky.

reina,

@OctaviaConAmore @studiofox @ampersand It is indeed something I think Steph came up with. Tho they say it more along the lines of corporations not being satisfied with profits, they want all of the money.

I've been watching them for 5 or 6 years now? During the time Zelda came out, I was a bit behind for a few months, but otherwise I've been catching up every single week owo

Steph along with some other video creators made me a lot more aware of these issues and turned me from a boring centrist (who wanted everyone well but accidentally upheld patriarchy) to, well, someone far left to summarise xD

Also, I see I'm not the only one to accidentally use she/her about them. I don't think they mind that as much as the other way around tho considering they're a transfem trashgirl :p

Anyone with knowledge on washing machines and dryers who can help me figure out what I should know to make a good purchase?

Firstly, are combined washing and drying a good idea or are there any significant downsides to it that I should be aware of?

What should I look for with regard to longevity and repairability?

What pricepoint should I aim for where you get good quality?

Brands to avoid or brands that tend to make good stuff?

    :boosts_ok: boosts appreciated

    reina,

@schrotie I do that which was why I was considering a combi one as I do have some clothes I can't just hang to dry, like some jackets.

Anyway, I'll just wash those clothes at my parents home if I need to. I bought a washing machine without drying capabilities
