I'm back on fosstodon (https://fosstodon.org/@RL_Dane) as my primary #fediverse identity, but I check in here from time to time. Love my polymaths peeps. I'm also at https://pixelfed.social/rl_dane

I have a blog, which I'm starting to write regularly in: https://rldane.space/

NOTE: My toots are in markdown. Your client and maybe even your instance might very well mangle the format.
For best results view the post natively on this instance's web interface. Your client should give you an option to copy the post's link. I post publicly by default to make sure people using regular Mastodon or other markdown/html-stripping services can still see what I intended to write.

I just discovered chill music playlists/station on YT.

Oh man... it's like someone took that peak blade runner look and sound (and a good bit of the hair band thing) and just put it in an eternal time loop.

I'm loving this. Peak (yet not 80s at all).

Ok, WOAH.

syncthing-fork's changelog (the Android client) said something about fixing a battery drain issue, so I updated it and set it to run even when on battery power.

I noticed something warm in my pocket, and my phone is a HOT POTATO! Lost about %15 battery in like two minutes. What the heck??

It's kind of amazing to me that we're already on kernel v6.
It felt like I was on 4.19 forever, and of course, I still remember 2.2, 2.4, and 4.0 pretty well ;)

A :

> Would you log in with your Google account,
> Would you log in so we can all keep count?

I do not want to log in with my Google account,
I would not wish to do so on a mount.
I would not like to do so in the air,
I would not like to do so anywhere.

I do not like mass surveillance and AI,
I do not like them, O creepy little guy.

> Would you log in with Google for Pinterest?
> Would you do so to check your account's interest?

I would not, could not to check my interest,
I would not, could not to browse through Pinterest.

I do not like mass surveillance and AI,
I do not like them, O creepy little guy.

> Would you, could you for a fiverr?
> Would you, could you for internet fiber?

I would not, could not Google for a fiverr,
I would not use that log in to get fiber.

I do not like mass surveillance and AI,
I do not like them, O creepy little guy.

I do not like surveillance with my mouse,
I do not like surveillance in my house,
I do not like mass surveillance and AI —

Not in my house,
Not with my mouse,
Not to order flannel,
Not to change the channel,

I do NOT LIKE mass surveillance and AI,
So begone with all your cookies, you creepy little guy.

There are some times that being on ARM really sucks, at least for Arch-based distros:

~ $ lsb_release -i
Distributor ID:	EndeavourOS
~ $ uname -srm
Linux 6.1.3-2-EOS-ARM aarch64
~ $ yay -S reflector-simple
 -> No AUR package found for reflector
 -> could not find all required packages: reflector
~ $

(I can't list them off from memory, but there are several missing packages in Arch Linux ARM, and many AUR packages just won't work right on ARM at all, because of assumptions in the PKGBUILD)

I was just thinking about the problem of services blocking people with VPNs because there are so many requests coming from a single IP.

What if there was a crowd-sourced VPN where your connection got bounced to a random user's uplink for each site every few minutes?
Each voluntary endpoint would set a whitelist of sites and protocols allowed (or groups thereof) so there's no worry about someone using your internet connection to download questionable torrents or access questionable sites.

I was just thinking about Safing's VPN where each site gets a different endpoint and how that could be accomplished in a crowd-sourced manner.

Also, any connections that aren't allowed through the whitelists can go through a traditional VPN like mullvad as a fallback.

Gotta say, @Mojeek is pretty awesome on the browser on this my super-distraction-free writing laptop.

Good on you guys. I have an easier time using you than on low-tech web browsers. I think I'll switch all my super-low-end web 1.0 browsing to ;)

Struggling with the decision whether to adopt a cat or dog.

I really want a kitten, but I only want one, and that means it needs a lot of time and attention.

I had two adolescent cats last time, and that worked well for them (growing up together), but I had a really hard time being impartial. And they kinda ran the house.

A dog would be better a lot of ways, partially because it could be with me a lot more than a cat could, but... I've got a cat-shaoed gap in my life right now, and a dog would be an odd fit. I haven't had dogs of my own in 25 years.

Hey ,

What communities are there on the OTHER than those for discussing programming/I.T./FOSS?

I know there's a pretty rich presence on , but what else is there for non-techies?

I don't need actual names/urls, just basic subject matter would be helpful.

For a WIP blog post. ;)

Guys, how do you manage lists on ?
I figured it out once, but now I'm lost.

I can view them and remove members in , but can't add them.

Argh? XD

$ type mcd
mcd is a function
mcd ()
{
    [ "$1" ] && mkdir "$1" && cd "$1"
}

~ $ mcd foo
foo $

One of my favorite aliases of all time. I use it nearly every day.

Hey bud, I was just thinking about you.
I know our two situations really don't compare, but I wanted to encourage you to spend some time thinking about good times with your dad, and to start journaling them. That helped me a lot through the first month.

I just spent the past half hour looking at videos of my cat on my phone and weeping... but not out of a sense of loss, but of love. It's strange. But it's wonderful to be able to mourn with hope.
That's something I don't get a whole lot of as the only believer in my family.

Anyways bro, have a wonderful Monday. Talk to you later.

A tale of two operating systems:

$ uname -srm
Linux 6.1.21-v8+ aarch64
$ ps aux |wc -l
205
$ ls /etc/ |wc -l
281
$ sudo find /etc/ -type f |wc -l
2625

$ uname -srm
OpenBSD 7.4 amd64
$ ps aux |wc -l
      63
$ ls /etc |wc -l
      79
$ doas find /etc -type f |wc -l
592

I'm not saying one is "better" than the other. I do 95% of everything on Linux.
But sometimes it's kinda nice to take a break from "SYSTEMD IS THE WAVE OF THE FUTURE LISTEN TO MEEEEEEEE!!!" ;)
