@jurgenhaas@fosstodon.org avatar

@ademalsasa @tuxedocomputers I'm currently at the Tuxedo Book BA 15 and I also use a desktop machine from them, which is already 6 years old and no longer shows up there.

My distro is Ubuntu everywhere, currently mostly on 20.04 LTS but a few servers already on 22.04.

@ademalsasa I use two 2nd hand Thinkpads, a T440s (w docking station) as my desktop PC, and an X1 as a couch PC. Both run Linux Mint perfectly. I don't bother w the fingerprint reader on the T440s. Everything incl that work on the X1. I have stayed away from high resolution screens (both laptops are just HD w matt finish), maxed out the RAM & ofc replaced HD w SSD in the T440.

Linux also runs well on older Thinkpads I own, an X200 (best keyboard ever) and an X220 but fan control was needed.

mini,

@ademalsasa A Dell XPS 13 from about 2019. Runs Arch Linux better than it runs Windows :)

Also an Apple MacBook Pro 14” (M1 Max). Has pretty reasonable Linux support now via the Asahi Linux project, but still not quite there yet.

mini,

@ademalsasa to expand a little bit on the Dell: under Windows, it keeps updating the WiFi driver to a version that doesn’t work at all. Installing Dell’s driver manually gives WiFi that mostly functions but is quite flakey.

On any half modern Linux distro, the WiFi just works.

It also performs better under Linux with thermald than it does under Windows, and is quieter doing the same tasks (things like watching twitch for instance!)

@ademalsasa I have or have used all of the above groups in the last decade. My current laptops are a ThinkPad, a Dell, and an MSI Alpha, but I have no particular brand loyalty. I care far more about the hardware specs and value for the price than I do about name of the vendor.

(I will say that System 76 was unfortunately my worst experience of the bunch. It did not hold up well at all.)
