For anyone who needs this, BLÅHAJ is pronounced blaw-high.

Editing to add that you can hear it by clicking on the little speaker icon: https://translate.google.com/?sl=sv&tl=en&text=bl%C3%A5haj&op=translate

@sarajw I did some experiments with the SpeechSynthesis API last year to see if we could possibly have an automatic pronunciation button on product pages, but it turns out that JS fails with Swedish as much as non-Swedish humans do. https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/SpeechSynthesis

Ran into an offended tourist today – offended that the coffee shop didn’t accept his lump of money

The cash free society here in Sweden is a shock to many foreigners

It’s rare to find a place that accepts cash here nowadays

@voxpelli last time my mum visited she asked how many kronor she’d need to exchange; was surprised at “zero”.

Google is so useless now - here is 5 emails from Google themselves, some relatively useful, that are just straight to Spam.

If I hadn't looked, I'd have never caught them.

@tanepiper there’s nothing keeping you using Google services?

Its (still) does not work:
https://adrianroselli.com/2023/02/audioeye-will-get-you-sued.html

It SLAPPs critics (I am not the only one):
https://adrianroselli.com/2023/05/audioeye-is-suing-me.html

…and in the end harms users and industry as a whole:

Throwing investor money at a clear PR ploy is not a fix (didn’t help ). If anything, it highlights the scam.

Reputation washing works both ways. I feel bad for its new CAO who likely had good intentions.

robinwhittleton,

@joelanman start with Hot Fuzz, a numberwang chaser in the middle, then The Favourite, then more numberwang afterwards.

Is there any particular way of building websites that you're nostolgic for?

robinwhittleton,
@robinwhittleton@front-end.social avatar

@chriscoyier honestly, writing small jquery plugins for mini interactions. I certainly felt at my most productive at that point, though working for an agency on small sometimes-throwaway sites probably coloured my experience.

Useful tip for explaining zero-based indexing of arrays to non-technical British English speakers, should you need to do so: it is how building floor numbering works, so it’s what you see on the buttons in a lift. G for ground, 1 for the next floor up, then 2, etc.

robinwhittleton,
@robinwhittleton@front-end.social avatar

@sil G-indexed arrays?

@sarajw it’s because you’re enthusiastic and you share new discoveries. It’s easy to become a bit jaded and to think “of course everyone knows this already so I won’t bother mentioning it”.

I'm on a nostalgia trip, I think I've found my first smartphone, it was a T-Mobile SDA (maybe a rebranded HTC hurricane):

https://www.pocket-lint.com/phones/reviews/68305-t-mobile-sda-smartphone-mobile-phone/

(I already had a PDA by then, which I mostly read pirated eBooks on)

I remember bouncing around between smartphones and 'communicators' like Nokia E71. I even had a BlackBerry for a while.

I also once had a 'phablet' (a Samsung Note Ii) which people laughed at me for - it was too big for a phone apparently - it had a 5.3" screen, hahah, sooo biiig!

robinwhittleton,
@robinwhittleton@front-end.social avatar

@sarajw I had the Orange version of that on a grandfathered unlimited data plan. That plus Opera Mini was heaven.

I feel like all users have become accustomed to a certain level of jank and frustration - and we just... Go with it in the end.

And we even forget how frustrating we find stuff, because we grow so used to our workarounds:

https://social.coop/@scottjenson/111108789598812477

Not the point @scottjenson is making here, but it also drives me crazy how it's just not at all native to an Android smart phone (same in iOS maybe?) to just edit a simple text file. You have to download mystery apps to just view or edit *.txt files.

robinwhittleton,
@robinwhittleton@front-end.social avatar

@sarajw @scottjenson you can view a txt file on iOS no problem from the Files app, but I can’t find any way to edit it.

If there was a name for a Frontend Developer who sits ideally in front-of-the-front-end while also advising Design with regards Accessibility concerns, maybe UX here and there, and the feasibility of actually implementing the design ideas in code...

What would that role be called?

I get that Design Systems and the people who build them sit in this space. But still, what is that role called? And what if I'm not actively the one in charge of the design system?

robinwhittleton,
@robinwhittleton@front-end.social avatar

@sarajw according to my employer, I’m a “software engineer”.

Just wondering - whats the public toilet situation like in other countries? Because in the UK it's really really bad. There basically aren't any these days - your best bet is a pub and they always say 'for customers only'. I think it's really bad and excludes people who rely on having toilets available.

robinwhittleton,
@robinwhittleton@front-end.social avatar

@joelanman Japan is effectively flawless. Every single konbini (convenience store) has a publicly accessible toilet for no fee. Same goes for most stations, museums, cafes, etc.

robinwhittleton,
@robinwhittleton@front-end.social avatar

@joelanman that’s asking a bit much. Also, in the more remote public toilets (e.g. the ones not in buildings) it’s probably a good idea to make sure you’ve got some spare toilet paper.

couldnt the css flexbox options have had simpler naming? horizontal and vertical align instead of justify-content and align-items? And why flex-start and flex-end instead of just start and end as values?

update - it's because some languages are written vertically, thanks @yatil

robinwhittleton,
@robinwhittleton@front-end.social avatar

@RyunoKi @yatil @joelanman yeah, but that’s not the only writing system with columns. For example, Mongolian: https://president.mn/mng/

As I’ve moved servers it’s probably time for a new !

Built my first couple of sites in the 90s, but I fell into front-end development as a career in 2003, just in time to make the choice to only bother to properly learn CSS and not table layout. And I honestly haven’t looked back.

My focus is always user-first tech-second, but that seems to be a valuable skill in the industry and I haven’t heard any complaints 😊

Experienced a scary thing on Facebook today:

For a course I’m studying we have a Facebook group with a chat for all of the course participants.

Today one of the other members wanted to share a good move suggestion with the rest of us. She shared it, we got notifications, we saw it, then it got promptly removed.

In places one could see a message saying it was removed due to breaking “community guidelines”, but me as an admin of the group got no notification about it at all.

Scary 🥶

@robinwhittleton@front-end.social avatar

@erikKroes @voxpelli Facebook and LinkedIn are pretty entrenched in Sweden; it’s attracted comment when people here find out that I’m not on either.
