@jumbanho @Defiance @flockofnazguls Fantastic band. I had the immense pleasure of seeing them live a couple of times. Exuberant AF.

Russia has now in two attacks bombed a construction hypermarket/superstore and a central park in Kharkiv, NE Ukraine.
SOTA reports there were hundreds of people in the store at the time, that the area of the fire is 15000m² and that the number of killed people is currently unknown.

Anyone who's been following me for a while will know I'm far from a Green party stan. But, as the only viable party to the left of Labour, I'll be giving them my party vote this year. The only way voting Green will 'let National in' is if they slip just below the 5% threshold, and if that happens labour are cooked anyway.

It strikes me that one of the most successful things neoliberalism did is change the language we routinely use to talk about economic roles. We say 'investors' not 'capitalists'. We say 'executives' not 'bosses'. We say 'employees' not 'workers'. All this serves to frame things so that capitalists/bosses sound like the 'doers' and workers are simply defined by their dependant relationship to their bosses.

@iangriffin Good call. My otherwise ethics focussed employer requires us to use Uber rather than taxis. Which irks me.

Kia ora fediwhānau. I'm preparing a series of short presentations on 'rebellious women'. Women who refused to toe the line and made waves. Who would you pick as your subjects? They can be from history or alive now. Aotearoa or international.

Ruminating on the ephemeral nature of digital storage, it strikes me we need a reverse Project Gutenberg, where the best of digital art, literature and correspondence are trasferred to durable physical media for posterity.

Every new and replacement NZ roadsign referencing a place with both a Māori and English name should be bilingual from now on. Bilingual roadsigns are absolutely normal, uncontroversial practice throughout the world. The only reason for objecting to this is racism.

Me at a party baiting linguists for kicks: "But English does have grammatical gender. We have 'a' words and 'an' words. The article must agree with the noun!"

I call these two genders 'frisky' and 'stolid'.

But I'm open to other suggestions!

Depressingly topical reminder that research shows transgender women who have undergone testosterone suppression have no clear biological advantages over cisgender women in sport. Restrictions on trans people participating in sports are designed to stoke bigotry and humiliate trans people. Don't fall for it.

I think we need a new commune movement. The first time round it didn’t stick because a) The promise of a normal, comfortable life in mainstream society was alway too seductive and b) everyone was too baked too much of the time. Time for a redux?

The left needs a good, motivating story. A coherent, compelling narrative. And one based on hope and courage rather than fear and reaction. 19th Century Marxism, whatever its flaws, provided a grand narrative which motivated millions. The cookers have their conspiracy stories which stoke them with a rage for action. The modern left seems confused and story-less.
