Walked 7.5 miles and climbed 50 flights up Mount Dublin today. Our first hike with the baby (who napped the whole time in a carrier) and my first big hike since I got long COVID in September 2022. Weโ€™ve done 24 miles in the last 3 days and 6+ miles each of the two days before that.

Hard to express how happy I felt getting back out and doing that kind of exercise without having to worry that I wouldnโ€™t be able to make it.

@sarajw I carried the food/water and some camera gear, but my wife carried the baby the whole time. She likes to say sheโ€™s been slowly building up to it for almost a year now, but itโ€™s still incredibly impressive.

My new title is โ€œOur Websites Need a Lifestyle Change, Not a Dietโ€

Itโ€™ll be a similar focus on the Web Platform to my perfnow talk but Iโ€™m gonna go a little deeper on INP and convincing people perf is a problem, given the audience is more of a broad spread of specialisms.

@25kV I think because quickconnect links involve an intermediate step where Synology fetches your current server IP address based on the last time your server checked in and redirects to it. It probably has handling for your server being down / unavailable, too, to verify itโ€™s running. I expect youโ€™d need an actual fixed URL / IP address to have it work without that.

Indeed. Although, most of "this place" has quote boosts, and has for a while, it's only Mastodon that doesn't. But hey now that has implemented quote boosts (including supporting Misskey's implementation) maybe that'll finally lead to progress?

@jdp23 @inquiline for what itโ€™s worth: I was on the team that launched QTs at Twitter and Iโ€™ve always thought we made a mistake with that feature, to the point where I felt real guilt. The abuse it introduced on the platform was absolutely awful, especially because of how easy it made targeting people with deep native support for linking to tweets.

That linked post is probably the first thing Iโ€™ve read in years that made me open my mind to the good stuff, too.

@jonny Etsy was happy as a clam to stay on EOL CentOS as long as there was a theoretical chance we could eventually prioritize upgrading to the next version, but the nanosecond they announced that change, leadership prioritized a massive year-long project to migrate to a different OS.

Explained enshittification to my therapist and he remarked on how closely the phases seemed to mirror peoplesโ€™ relationships to their jobs โ€” start out passionate about the mission (focus on users), then move to focusing on their position within the company (focus on customers), then hanging on for money/stock (clawing back value), then they go numb and / or quit.
